Pictures are the best option for items with boxes/multiple parts or items that have have shape to them, but with carts or flat items, scanning seems to yield much better results in many ways. What do you guys think from the buyers point of view? Is there any disadvantage to not having a further back birds-eye view of the item if?
I'm going to be listing a lot of stuff on ebay in the near future, and am wondering what the general consesus is around here.
I've only used scans in my auctions... which have been mostly for some Japanese comic books. Since I don’t have a camera, scans were the only option. I was sure to indicate in the auction text that the pictures come from scans of the actual item. No complaints so far, but I can't really confirm if hindered the final value of my auction.
The scans, properly cropped, make the auctions look really slick. I would have no problem buying from someones auction that used them instead of photos.

Yep, scan or photo makes no difference to me as long as it is a scan/photo of the item I am bidding on. Stock photos are more of a problem for me.

I have sold alot and bought alot of stuff on the internet. On my selling, I do scanner on some of my smaller items, and my camera on larger(box, cart and instruction)sales. I have to agree with number6, as I don't care which way the picture is taken(scanner or camera), as long as it's the auctual item being sold. As for the "stock pictures", I hate them  , and wish that E-Bay would take them off of their site. Just about all the bootleg GBA games (from Hong Kong and China) use them when they are most of the time just the cartridge and a plastic protective case.
