I almost did this. I picked up Shadow Hearts: Covenant as an afterthought when I bought Atelier Iris a couple months ago.

Then, a few days ago, I bid on a copy of SH:C on ebay. Luckily, I got outbid because as I was putting my new copy of Gradius V on the shelf, I "discovered" I already had the game.

So, ever buy a game you didn't know you already had?

No, but I did mess up and do that with 2 or 3 music cd's on ebay recently.

I've done this at least 20 times, probably more.

I've also :embarrassed: reviewed a movie I had already reviewed.

I bought Neo Contra twice for PS2, fortunately they let me return it and exchange it for Ghost in the Shell since I hadn't removed the shrinkwrap. Other times when I can't return a duplicate I trade them or give them to friends. That's why when I'm hunting for games for a specific console, I try to have my Pocket PC handy with the up-to-date list of games that I own.

Nothing huge, but I did this with Ironsword for the NES. Only, a $3 purchase but I was baffled when I cleaned it up and was putting on then shelf right next to...Ironsword?!

Here's the really sad part - I had a crossreferenced list of "games to finish my NES collection" I had been consulting, and on it was "Eggsplode/Short Order." Once I bought it I was preparing to shelve it in my collection, only as I was sorting in the new titles I got to S and found... you guessed it, "Short Order/Eggsplode." D'oh!

Yeah, I've done this with at least 20 NES carts. It's hard to remember what you do and don't have after you get around to the 700 cart mark.

Many times. NES and PSone games, mostly.

I hate when that happens.

If you mean 700 NES carts, just try to remember the ones you NEED instead! LOL

If you mean overall, then I agree as I'm at like 690 or so and it just happened.

Generally this only happens to me on franchise games. Like I keep forgetting if I need part 1 or 2 of Tenchu, for example. Also, some cheap games that I keep picking up and putting back. One day I'll buy "One" or "Apocalypse", but a few weeks later I'll buy it again by accident. Too damn similar.

I did that with phantasy star 4 I had forgotten I that I had bought it years ago and recently bought it again on a ebay lot. Then one day I was cleaning the closet and Hello another copy od phantasy star four LOL

Nope, but I'm sure it will happen with some old "number" sports games. But heres a story, one day when I went Churche, my dad came back with THREE Genesis, all from the same flea market. I forgot that he had already bought a Genesis for me a flea market before, and I already had a Genesis before that @_@ .At lease one of them came with abunch of complete games.

Yes, that's why I recently bought a Palm PDA. I have now loaded Excel game list in it and take it with me when going hunting. I figure it will pay for its self by preventing me from buying dups.

yep!
and that's how I ended up with two sets of Saturn Radiant Silvergun and DC D-Direct Space Channel 5 Part 2 Collector's Box set...

Luckily I sold both on eBay for a nice profit margin... :p

Fairly common for me for older systems I collect for but don't play that much (2600, NES). My biggest goof as that when I get new inventory, I log it in my Excel database and not my DP guide or vice versa. When I'm online I reference the Excel database to see what I need, when I'm in the field I take the DP guide. I've goofed up about a dozen times that way.

In re-cataloguing my collection for the first time in ages recently, I discovered that I've fallen into this practice pretty frequently. LOL

P.S. Anyone wanna trade something for 2600 Towering Inferno or the Sears version of Space Wars? :P

Only one time on accident
It was either Gyruss or Gyromite i can't remember now. Either way it was only 2 bucks i think.

Other than that the only dups i have i got for free.

With the exception of the Outlaw demos for Xbox.
I bought 2 copies of Red Hot and 9 More Holes of Xmas.
They were so cheap i had to.

With games it never happened to me because I have 1) not a lot of games (more than six hundred), 2) a pretty good memory. Very often I can tell if I have a game even bought with a bulk of ten in one day. Still today I know where I got games bought five years ago and the price.

But it happen to me with a guide once. I bought a guide I already had.

Since then I keep my game and guide lists meticulously updated, and take them with me when I intend to buy a game.

Never. My collection is far too small for me to forget its contents, and that's the way I like it.

Only once, so far. When Guilty Gear X-2 came out for XBox, I was planning on buying it during one of our many 2 for $30 on $20 game sales, but for some reason I ended up buying it by itself a few weeks before the sale started. Then I bought it along with another game only to remember when I got home that I already bought it, so I was just going to exchange it for Kirby Air Ride. Well, I left both games up at the service desk w/my receipt and I told 2 of my managers and whichever co-worker was currently working the desk that I'd do the transaction at the end of my shift. But then I forgot and went straight home. The next day the games and the receipt were gone. The receipt disappeared and someone stole the games. Right off the service desk counter. I love how observant my co-workers are. At any rate, when another copy of Kirby Air Ride came in, my manager still let me do the exchange. It was the least he could do. It wasn't my fault those games got stolen, anyway. Argh.

But normally this doesn't happen because A) My collection is still pretty small so I can almost always remember whether or not I have something and 2) I keep a thorough list on my computer, which needs updating, I just realized.

Almost forgot. Mortal Kombat for the 16 bit systems. I can't for the life of me remember which ones I've got and which I need. 1 for SNES? Trilogy for Gen? And did I ever pick up MK or Sega CD? I probably get confused because the covers are pretty similar. I think I've brought home about 3 copies of MK3 for Gen, but thankfully they were all from thrift stores so no huge loss.

Most of the time i know what i have, the thing is that i collect complete/boxed at least,so sometimes when i have cart only i buy the complete version. It's not that i forget what i have but complete what i want.

I've done this alot. Although its not so much that I 'forget,' its just that sometimes I get a game in a lot of games that I buy, and somehow don't scratch it off my list. At which point, I think I still need the game, which inclines me to buy it again. Sort of pisses me off.

The frequency of this happening increases as the size of my collection increases. It never happens when I have my trusty DP guides/checklists with me, but I can't tote that stuff everywhere.

I have almost done it a few times but thankfully went by the "if you don't remember don't buy it" rule I have. Most times it's the case of "okay do I have this for SNES? Genesis? ah, hell..."

:)

I did the same thing last year - bought a Tapwave Zodiac 2 and loaded all my spreadsheets onto an SD card. Got real tired of having to return games or donate them back to whoever runs the thrift 'cause I already had them.

Even with my games lists in a database, I 've made the mistake of buying a game twice a few times in all these years. Last time was actually last year - bought Crystal Mines II buried treasure again. I forgot to put the original in my database, and only found out about a month after I bought it. Oh well, I'll probably try to sell it one of these days.
