Would anyone happen to know of a list such as this? since the PS1 there has been a rather Large increase on production of RPGs and I really just don't have time to keep track. I want to have nothing but the best in my collection.
So if anyone has a Reliable link or if anyone thinks we should do a digipress version please vote :)

All I know is Ocarina of Time should be at the top of that list.
All of you guys who don't think its an RPG can bite me.
...top? :hmm: Bleh. Anyway, I don't think it's a good idea. Top X lists are based on people's preferences. The top 5 RPGs on my list probably wouldn't even appear on anyone else's. And then games like OoT, FF7 and 8 wouldn't even show up on mine. I think it would be too tough to pull off without pissing off other people too much, heh.

Here's what I think: Instead of attempting a definitive top 100 games list--which are guaranteed to never work--let's try something different.
Each member submits their own top games, and these are compiled into one list. Call it the "preferred" list, if you will.
Sometimes people are embarassed or even self-convinced that a certain game isn't worthy of a so-called definitive list. This sort of mentality ensures bland and predictable results; people simply go for what they expect. In a way, the process is more of a prediction than an election. In fact, people often vote for games they haven't even played!
Someone very recently posted a top 100 list from a German magazine. Ice Hockey was at #95, and this made me smile. I now realize why: I didn't expect it.
So, let us try something different for a change. Please.

Take a look through the classic discussion forum, chances are you'll find some "greatest games" lists in there. I'm pretty sure there's an RPG list, a list for at least a handful of systems (I remember a Saturn list and a PS1 list, specifically), and if you really dig you could probably find the rest of the ones you'd like to see.

Yes, I would like there to be one. It would be cool.

it certainly should not be top 100, probably no more than top 50. I wouldent mind this idea, but when it comes to RPG's people will thenb start arguements over wether or not certain games can be counted as RPG's such as zelda.

that sounds most certianly better then what I said. so a "Roundtables Top 50/100 preferred RPGs List" Sounds most awsome. Maybe keep it in thread form so it could always be dynamic. Because new RPGs will always come out and it's possiable to top the older ones.
That sound good? should I make a new thread about it or keep it here?

no because everyone has a different definition of what is a good RPG and what is not
To be honest i don't think there are 100 great RPGs

Maybe we could make a list of all the lists that have cropped up on this site and in DP related publications.
After that, we can make a list of the people that contributed to making the list of lists.
Should the list of lists appear as a listed list in the list of lists? I just can't decide.

good idea but definately not worth doing since itll never work. like it was mentioned before, every person has a different definition of good, and RPG is an even tougher genre since a lot of people consider games to be RPGs that simply arent (OOT, or any zelda to begin with, is a perfect example. good game? yes. RPG? no. should be on top RPG list? NO.)
as for everyone submitting their own suggestions and simply compiling it, is pretty dumb too, since we'll end up with an enormouse list of 95% of every RPG ever released (and a bunch that arent even RPGs), which would be pretty much worthless.
Classic Discussions already has a bunch of 'your top 10' lists. look at those.
on a side note, this might work with other genres, genres with tightly defined boundaries, (such as straight up fighting games, shooters, Hockey/etc games etc etc) but the problem would be that there are usually few games in said genre to be worth compiling since theres few enough to just know what the best are. most genres these days are mixes, a little bit of everything.

Personally, I think there are just too many damn lists already. In fact, I'm pretty sure there's 3 or 4 lists archived in classic discussion abouts rpgs, maybe more. IMHO if I never see another top x list it'll be too soon.
