NES Final Fantasy IIj in English?

Now, is this for real, or did someone just burn the patched ROM and stick it in an old cart? (I can't say I'm familiar with the fan translation.)

I'm guessing it's the patched/hacked rom, burned onto a cart. That's not too high of a price if it actually works. I'd guess it'd probably cost you $35-50 for parts, and you'd need rom burners/soldering skills, but I wouldn't spend that much from a newbie seller with no references. Who's to say he isn't simply playing that game thru his DC sitting on the shelf beside the tv? :/

It has to be hacked as there's no official FF2 for NES, let alone official English version. The FF2 we have for SNES is really based on Japanese FF4, Square choose to skip 2 and 3.

IIRC there's a plan out on the internet for making FF2j and FF3j ROM into NES cart but I haven't bothered to search. I do have a plan for making EBZ.

The English text shown on the screen is identical to that of a fan-translated ROM that's available all over the net. It's almost certainly a homemade cart.
