Thanks!!
I was going to have them printed on photo paper but I didn't think it would look very good, it wouldn't look like a real NES label. So I just printed them on regular paper and ran a thin, clear packing tape over the print. Be sure to go over the tape with a roller or bottle or something to thin it out and get any air out of it. Then I just glue sticked the hell out of the back and pressed them on, again using a roller or bottler to flatten it as best as possible. Be sure that you get a good amount of glue on the corners as they tend to like to be a pain.
These printed at 144 DPI and while they look good could look better. The Transformers cart if a gift for a friend but I'm going to redo the Tower of Druaga label at 300 DPI as it's going in my personal collection. The other minro gripe I had was the Nintendo SOQ was a little too yellow/orange and not gold.
My next labels will be:
The Goonies I
Crisis Force
Gradius II

Ah ok, like that. How do you open the Famicom carts btw? Dont you have to destroy the back label to reach the screws?

Famicom carts don't have screws.. they're just held together with plastic tabs.. if you wedge a flathead into the side and pry at it you can get them to open up without any damage if you want to keep the original case intact.

Ah.. didnt know that. Thanks for the tip :) Im pretty sure someone here told me that there was a screw behind the label on the back of the cartridge because I asked once how to open famicom carts.

Those look really good. I'm wondering how collaging a seal of quality from a magazine ad would look on a homemade label. If done right you couldn't tell it was a cut out, and you'd definately have a 100% match on the colors.
And maybe my printer just sucks, but don't you get a pattern across the pure black blocks of color?

Could be.. each publisher has their own case design.. of the four Famicom to Nintendo conversions I've done, all of them were held together by tabs.

Your printer probably sucks.. or just can't handle solid black well. I have no printer so I just hit up Kinko's. I have the color right for the seal now. Just needed to lower the red color to get it closer to gold/brown. Looks fantastic now and I can't wait to finish it up and reprint it. But of course I have to Goo Gone the label I already put on there. Ugh.

Wow, nice job on the labels. I used to do this kind of stuff with VHS tapes back in the day, but it never looked as professional as yours. very nice :)

you don't happen to cram roms into carts as well, do you? it would be nice if i could find a person to do that AND make a custom label for a game i want.

Great job! Very pro-looking.
Does anyone know a way to make labels that are the same gloss and thickness as real NES labels? Or would I probably have to go to a label company?

The Goonies I
Crisis Force
Gradius II
Now those in particular I want to see. Do you plan to do them in the "classic" Konami style, aka the silver bars? You know, like you see on every Konami NES game up until about 1991 or so.

my bad.. i thought there was, but it's just where the plastic was injected. those clips are major bitches though, i just broke one clip and broke a hole where another one clips in, which means it's visible from the outside.. fuck.. that was my mario usa too.. :(

Leroy, what brand of packaging tape are you using? Like the scotch tape I have is 2inches wide and is slightly too narrow to fully cover an NES label.

Are you gonna make a website or blog detailing the steps to converting a Famicon cart to an NES cart? Is it REALLY simple or does it require a bit of knowledge of circuitry and stuff? I would be interested in knowing how to do that, although I dunno if I can bring myself to crack open carts....

I used the packing tape they had at Kinko's. It was wide enough to cover the label in one pass. I have no idea what brand it was but I do know that it wasn't as "smooth" as I would have liked it to have been. You can't really tell unless you put the label close-up and under light though.

I guess I can post some pictures and steps here in this thread or start another thread on it. All you really need to know how to do is unscrew and rescrew an NES cartridge case.

Tape widths of 3 inches and more, made of polypropylene (non-yellowing archival grade) and 1.7 or 1.8 mil thickness are called Label Protection Tape. This most closely mimics NES labels imo, and it's what leonk uses for his NES reproductions unless he's switched to something else.
Shipping outlets, warehouse suppliers tend to be the best places to get this particular tape at.

I have a famicom game of Gradius II housed in a NES cart as well.
here's a pic of the cart and label the way i got it.
http://ste.homelinux.com/~cuddlecub/starfighter.jpg
here's the label I'll be printing off for it. I'll try getting this done at Business Depot printed on Sticker paper first. if it turns out bad then I'll go this way.

BTW, if anyone else wants to make thier own labels here's the size needed (assuming my photoshop isn't all messed up)
CM = 7.5w, 13.3h
Pixels = 217w, 377h

Do you have a 300 DPI version of that label? I haven't started my Gradius II yet and could just use that one if it's high enough resolution. Looks good.

I have a larger version without any cropping done but it's still in jpg format. I'm not all that inclined with graphic art to know what DPI is thats the best I can do...I also have the .psd file.
