I recently bought Mortal Kombat Gold off eBay, and I've noticed a problem when I play it: I can't hear any sound effects. I can hear music, but whenever I am playing a match there are literally no sound effects other than the music playing.

Did this game not have sound effects? It seems awful strange...it really makes the game dull. Maybe it's my Dreamcast?

Don't know what to tell you except that my copy of MK Gold works just fine. Might be your DC but more likely it's a bad disc.

It is possibly the disc as well. The original version of MK Gold was supposedly glitchy, and was re-released with "HOT NEW!" on the cover. Not sure what the glitch is (someone who knows more please say something), but maybe that or disc damage has something to do with your problem.

Youve got the problematic original MK: Gold.

There was a problem in the manufacturing of them and you guessed it. The sound doesnt work on them. For a full complete copy of the game, the disc should be yellow, and your manual should just have the MK Gold art work on it.

The Hot!New! re-release (that fixes all these problems) will have a lime green logo on the upper left portion of the manual and the disc will be redish in color.

And that would be my version. Good to know that.

Oddly enough, not every original version will have the problems arise on every machine. That's why a lot of them still exist - most people who got the "defective" discs didn't even notice that they didn't work!
