PS2 Memory Cards - region specific?

Just a quick query - are PS2 memory cards region specific?

For example, will a Japanese PS2 memory card work on a PAL system.

Can it be formatted for different region consoles?

I bought 2 memory cards from USA and they work fine on my PAL system. I would think it is the same with japanese too.

I've mixed region saves with no ill effects, not totally sure on hardware though.

Not sure on the PAL deal, but I assume so. I have used my card on both US & JPN systems.

I can tell you that they at least USED to be. During the launch year of the PS2 we often had no choice but to use the official Japanese Sony cards on first gen American consoles. The cards had to be formatted. Not sure the other way though because we obviously used Japanese cards on the initial Japanese PS2s.

All Universal! Even Pads IIRC

I have a PAL Memory card with USA, JP and PAL saves on it :)
