Here's the story from NEXT GEN (http://next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1033&Itemid=2).

Sony is to recall millions of AC adaptors sold with the PlayStation 2 'slim version' because of about 40 reported cases of overheating and melting.

Globally, about 3.6 million adaptors are affected. These include almost a million units sold in North America, 2.3 million units in Europe and 60,000 units in Japan.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, is voluntarily replacing PlayStation 2 (Model# SCPH-70011 and 70012) AC Adaptors (SCPH-70100) manufactured by Hipro Electronics free of charge. The affected AC Adaptors were packaged with the SCPH-70011 and 70012 models of the PlayStation®2 entertainment system sold after October 2004. Only AC Adaptors manufactured by Hipro Electronics identified with a serial number that begins with the prefix ”F3” within a certain date range are included in this replacement program.

Here's the site that you are supposed to go to if you have an affected unit (for us North Americans, at least): http://www.us.playstation.com/Adaptor/

Not to be outdone by Microsoft's flaming Xbox, Sony follows suit. ;)

Makes me laugh LOL I'm glad I didn't give in to the slimline, now.

http://www.ps2ac.com/ seems to be the place Sony set up for this problem.

Hahaha well i don't i have pissy luck? First my first gen xbox and now my PSTwo. Wonderful just wonderful. This is another example of Sony's shitty quality. I wonder if this might have been contributing to the dead lasers in some models?

Well at least Sony is being quick about doing the recall and not being a bitch. Good for them, for a change.

Can someone tell me if there are other models of the slim PS2 out there? I'd be really floored if there were only one million PS2 consoles sold since October 2004 in the US.

And I just setup in the television stand all the systems... spending quite some time getting everything to fit and be happy......

Oh well better go order one.

My Launch PSTwo did indeed have one in case your not sure of when you should worry.

Thanks for the info.

I take back everything I said about the Xbox's similar recall.

Yeah Dan there has been one revision to the PSTwo released, but it's essentially the same as the original PS2. The only difference is minor circutry changes to prevent laser burnout and they've all been released since Oct. 2004. My guess for why the numbers for sales are so high is because of replacements. That is if the numbers are correct.

Is there something in this for me? Is Sony going too give me something for my trouble, or do I have to just send in my adapter and wait for a replacement and be happy about it?

And could we PLEASE not turn this into another Sony-bashing thread?

Actually they will send you the adapter first. Then you send yours back. They're paying for shipping and everything. At least that's what they said when i did mine.

And i agree no Sony bashing. This is about the adapters and maybe apologizing to MS. LOL

Sony's Kutaragi was reported as saying "The AC adaptor overheats on purpose. It's according to specifications. This is something that we've created, and this is our specification. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake. There may be people that complain about being burned or shocked or having their family and homes burned to the ground, but that's something which users and game software developers will have to adapt to. I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the building is actually an inescapable death trap. It's the same as that."

:D

This is a joke.

Man give sony someone to blame and there all over it (the AC Adapter is made by a subcontracter). But when it's there fault they act as if they have no clue and wait to be sued first (The DRE's evryone got with PSX and PS2).

Whatever sony....

I'm just waiting to see whats going to go wrong with my PSP. Some have already mentioned the UMD Drive going out or not being reconized or something. over time.

"Please allow 7 – 10 business days for order processing into our system. Orders will be delivered within 2 - 4 weeks estimated (not including shipping and handling time) from the time of order submission."

Well I guess that means I won't be buying any PS2 games for 2 - 4 weeks then. LOL

Same as PapaStu, mine is a PSTwo launch console.

BS to that! You make a turd and I'm gonna say, "Hey, thats a turd!" You Sony whelps can take your flaming PSTwo's and like it. When my GC starts spiting flames at me, I swear, I'll eat my humble pie. But not a moment before. :P

I can't say I'm surprised though. Not sure if mine is one of the affected units but, I did notice how hot the box got on my unit after about an hour of use.

Yeah mine got pretty hot too, that's why i jumped on the return as soon as i could. But hey, show some respect. I think this might actually be the first time Sony was doing replacements without being a total dick about it.

PSP Square button, Kutaragi was an ass and it took them a month to admit it was a problem and start doing replacements

PS2 DRE's are being repaired off and on by Sony. Sometimes they will, sometimes they'll rape your wallet.

Sony is being really good about this and it's probably only for legal reasons, but at least they're doing it.

Yeah they built shit, but they've been doing that for years. No point in turning this into just another Sony bashing thread filled with kittens.

Actually, I meant it the other way. Europe sold 2.3 MILLION of these consoles, the US only sold 1 million and Japan only sold 60,000?!?

That would mean the Xbox is greatly outselling the PS2 if I'm not mistaken, and the PS2 numbers in Japan would absolutely be sucking (well, based on what they're numbers usually are) while in Europe, the PSTwo would be doing absolutely insanely good.

Just odd numbers is all. Something tells me not all US / Japanese AC adaptors are affected. If they are, color me confused.

Got my replacement today, just a week after finding out about it (here!)/registering it online.

Dont shred the box while opening it; you need to send your original adaptor (not the power cord) back to them in it. There really should be a notice on the label. Luckily I remembered that before I tore it apart!

& it came UPS, so now I gotta find the nearest pickup site...

Wow- after checking my order status on playstation.com, it appears to have been shipped last Wednesday- ONE DAY AFTER I registered it there.

Color me impressed, though it took a week to get here.

This is affecting Launch Model PSTwo's here in the states. Xmas last year was crushed with people trying to get these, I really doubt that the one you got sat on the shelves for just shy of a year.

@ Goatdan, I think those numbers (being that they are low) for all of the countries are the number of affected units sold in the countries. Not total PSTwo units sold since their introduction last year. I know that they've already had a model revision or two for them and this recall only affects a very specific group of systems.

Well I guess I lucked out. I have a launch slim PS2, but the adapter was made a month before the Hippro jobs, and was made by some other company. Accoring to Sony's website, I am in the clear! Good.

Mine arrived today, but it's not some brand new part like Sony might lead you to believe. In fact it's another adaptor brick made by Hipro, except it's manufactured three months after my original one - yeah, that still puts it in 2004. In other words these are refurbs / NOS adaptors that Sony is sending out = bullshit. Also whoever coiled the cord on the replacement adapter and then put the twist tie on didn't know what the hell they were doing since it was a mess when I unpacked it. Additionally on the lower part of the new adaptor shell there is what looks like blue paint, wtf?!

Or that you wanted to believe? Sony never said anything about "new" parts. From their website:

"Sony Computer Entertainment America, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, is voluntarily replacing PlayStation 2 (Model# SCPH-70011 and 70012) AC Adaptors (SCPH-70100) free of charge. Plus it's free. All we have to do (or not) is drop it in a UPS box. Why complain?

I don't want to start a flame war or anything here but dude, relax. I'm a former sales rep for both SCEA and Sega of America and at the very least the replacement power brick they sent should have been CLEAN. If they're refurbs, fine. If they're NOS parts, fine. However they shouldn't be scratched up and have unrelated paint on them. If I was to buy a new PSTwo and the power brick inside was in the condition of the one they sent me I'd return it and I'm sure most of the others here would too.

And "voluntarily replacing" means "avoid lawsuit." I applaud how proactive Sony is being with the replacement campaign, it came super fast and they've been very forward with getting the word out about the recall.

Concerning the poor packaging of the repalcement adapter, I have EVERY right to complain since if it gets beat to hell in transit due to poor packaging means and craps out in a week because of this, or arrives DOA due to poor packaging, that would leave me SOL. UPS is rough with packages, we all know that, apparently Sony doesn't.

My whole post above was simply commenting on the condition that my replacement power brick arrived in. I'm not one of those "burn in hell Sony, you can't make anything that works right" people - but come on, things should at least be sent in a professional manner.

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! Sony Goofed! Wrong adaptors were sent out! * read more below

Welllllllll

I got a note from UPS today saying that I had a package, so I went to the apartment office to pick it up and what does it look like? A replacement adaptor.

Another one.

I had already sent out my 'faulty' one and put the replacement one up a few weeks back. So when I open it up, what do I see? Yes you guessed it, another replacement adaptor. With a new note that states the following and I quote...

Important Notice
You have been identified as a consumer that has recieved a replacement AC Adaptor which may still be subject to the recall.

Please DO NOT USE your first replacement AC Adaptor

Please use the new replacement AC Adaptor enclosed, which includes a "Replacement Adaptor" cord label.

Please return the first replacement using this box and pre-paid return UPS label. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Just a heads up for those who got a first adaptor. You'll be getting a second one soon, if not already. Honestly unless they changed some internals for this 'second' adaptor, the ONLY difference I can find is that there is a sticker on the cord (next to where it plugs into the PSTwo) that says 'Replacement Adaptor'

Heh- logged on just now to say the same...UPS truck pulls up, in the guy's hand I notice a pkg suspiciously the same size as the other one...SURPRISE!

The only diff I could tell was the date on my first replacement was 12/2004, my replacement replacement (no, not a typo) says 09/2005.

FWIW, I never had any trouble w/ either adaptor, but better safe than sorry...

Ehem, I think I'm owed an apology from a certain other poster in this thread. Told you guys the original replacements weren't what they should have been. The more I think about it, with how it was packaged and the damage and blue paint on the first replacement, I'd say they had a clerical error and were reshipping adapters that people had returned as per the recall.

This time around it's a new part, packaged how the adapters come in the PSTwo retail box.

Told you so.

Makes me laugh LOL I'm glad I didn't give in to the slimline, now.

http://www.ps2ac.com/ seems to be the place Sony set up for this problem.

I bought one of these at the very beginning..second delivery to best buy, since the first shipment sold out before I got there. LOL

BTW, my adaptor was OK. Purchased in either Oct or Nov 2004..don't remember.

Has this unit been reliable? I haven't really read any complaints about quality as per previous versions...
