Okay, I'll admit it.. I enjoyed it.. for what's it was.

It's essentially the anime version of a Michael Bay movie. Turn off your brain and enjoy the action.. because if you try to think about the story or the emotion (which there is none) you'll just insult yourself. If I had just gotten out of anime, I'd probably hate this movie.. because it's pretty much typical TO THE LETTER of every other action/sci-fi anime out there. But seeing as I've been out of that for five or six years now (and I'm familiar with the characters and setting) I was able to take it and just have fun with it. For the first part of it, I thought it was going to be overtly pretentious, self-mastubatory and just trying WAY too hard to be "cool," which is what I was expecting, but once the monster appeared and attack Midgar I was pretty much glued to the action. At one point in the ending something happens that for a brief second, makes you think they're going to jump back into a poor attempt to force "emotion" into the movie (much like the "famous" scene from the game), but it's just a tease and thankfully ends on a good note.

But damn.. the soundtrack totally fucking rules. I am buying it the second it comes out. The JENOVA and One Winged Angel remixes at the end were SO yummy, I'm guessing that's the version of OWA they played at the "More Friends" concert and I was afraid I'd never get to hear it.. but wow. It's great!

I must know how you viewed this movie. I was under the stern impression that it was delayed until late November for a stateside release.

Yeah it was delayed. I'm gonna say that he downloaded it (which is what I did). You can find it subbed over at boxtorrents.com

The movie itself was better than I expected. And I agree that the soundtrack is awesome. I just loved it when One Winged Angel was playing. I also loved Vincent's entrance. He was such a badass. 8-)

I can't watch the download... it simply won't be high enough quality. Unless it's a straight DVDRip, I'm not going to bother, I'll just have to wait.

Also your best bet is to dl the English subs and add them into Media Player Classic. Does the torrent off boxtorrents have the English subs already in?

Coolest thing with adding the subs in is you can actually change the dialogue to what you want since its a txt file.

But yeah, this movie is amazing and I will be buying this when it's released.

Anyone else think Barret now looks like Ludacris now?

For the record, I hated the direction Final Fantasy VII took the series, hated the characters and story and think Aerith is the single worst low-level plot-device ever, so I went in with a very weighted opinion and still managed to enjoy it.

Also, can we keep this to discussion of the movie and not where to download it from?

I hope they keep the cast they had for the FFVII characters in Kingdom Hearts for the English version.

I'm tainted by bias against the game and I enjoyed it as a pretty action movie. Not to mention that Reno was funny as hell. :D I'll probably buy it shortly after release...speaking of which, is there still not a date pinned down?

At it's best, FF:AC can be called an experimental action tech demo with an interesting vision. At it's worst; a boring movie.

Saying it's a Michael Bay movie is a bit too harsh and off the mark. Avent Children is covered in stereotypical anime influence, not in the vein of American "blockbusters".

The action sequences were fairly original, and definitely adrenaline soaked, but nothing really worked for me.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but for in the 1 hour and 30 some-odd minutes the movie ran, I felt like nothing happened. Just more introspective brooding, cryptic dialogue, rhetorical questioning, and plenty of "..."s on the way to the next action sequence.

Frankly, Final Fantasy VII wasn't very long on plot, and it showed in the movie. Other than Cloud, there was virtually no real development. Not even the "villains" (Kadaj, and his nameless henchmen) have any sort of character growth. Sure, there's an obligatory reunion of the original cast, and some nods to the original game (summons, a few overdrive-like powers, etc) but it's all there just for fan-service. It does nothing for the movie.

Anyway. Don't let me dissuade you from watching it/buying it. For me, it just didn't work.

I'm still reading through the plot summary of the game to refresh myself. Before I watch the movie.

The version available around the net is a .avi that's a dvd rip - the quality is okay. but please let's not talk about how to download stuff here.

I cant wait to watch that scene with Tifa fighting that dude.

When does the official US release of it come out? I'm assuming that it will just be subtitled and not dubbed in English (which would probably suck anyway considering the translation that FF7 the game received.

There should be an official subtitled version already ready -- last fall, FF Advent Children had its second international showing at the Montreal New Cinema Festival. And there's no way they'd show it in Japanese only. And no, I didn't go see it -- I found out about it a few weeks later. :(

I've been looking around the net and can not find anything - is there a screening of Advent Children scheduled for NYC?

EDIT: ONE more thing, here's a quote from Penny-Arcade's post regarding this flick:

Fanboy Warning: This film contains scenes that may be totally fucking awesome. Your favorite characters may be rendered in extreme detail as they take part in mind-blowing battles set in familiar locales. Futuristic scabbard/motorcycles might be depicted in a way that makes them appear sweet.
I wasn't able to say it better myself, but I completely agree. :END EDIT

I think the main thing that this movie has going for it (aside from excellent animation and soundtrack) is the fact that I'd spent 70+ hours with these characters before and it's just flat-out GREAT to see them again. Made me want to replay the game.

I think it works better than FF:TSW did, mostly due to that built-in familiarity with the cast. I don't know how I'd feel about the film if I hadn't played the game.

Funniest Part: All I can say is: "ring tone". (I don't want to spoil anything for anybody.)

I also loved the choice by the animators on how to choreograph the fight against the BIG summon. The idea that normal sized people could do ANYthing to hurt such a large beast is silly, yet we accepted it in the game, because, that's part of the game. To make such a scene believable they had to have the characters doing feats of heroic, mythical proportions (not just wait, attack, wait, attack) and I thought that was done VERY well.

All the fight scenes were wonderful. I'm not even going to bother with the subtitles whenever I buy the DVD. Unless the commercial translation is better than the fansub.

So, bottom line: great to see the characters again and the imaginings of what the fights would look like in real-time at real-scale were just plain really enjoyable. I can't wait to watch it with my son, he's gonna love it.

The plot? Meh. It's there, but it's not the reason to buy the DVD.

I hope extras on the DVD will be cool. It's going in my Xmas stocking. :)[/b]

My only major complaint was that there were TOO MANY goddamn motorcycle scenes. At least half the movie was Cloud on his bike, I swear to god.

Yuffie is still the best character though, and apparently the only one with common sense.

When I was growing up, FF7 was one of the most incredible game I had ever played. I might still argue that even to this day. The emotional attachment I had to the story and characters was somethingI had never felt before from a game.

That's pretty much what the majority of fanboys that this movie is aimed at are looking for.

I'm still waiting for an official release though :(

Why?

That is all I could think while watching it today after getting a bootleg subbed version in an indie game store (where I also scored my find of the week!). It is not totally horrible and is defintely worth the time for someone who has any interest at all in gaming, but the Michael Bay film characterization from earlier posts is a good fit. I would also list Attack of the Clones as an inspiration. There is a certain spookiness inherent in CG "actors" that actually works in favor of this film aesthetically, but sadly, undead characters lack emotional connectivity.

The CG is very cool (when isn't it?) and also very video game-like, which works very well. It is also definitely the Final Fantasy movie they should have made the first time. It is just that this is still tough to sit through, even for someone who likes this kind of stuff (FF fanboys will be unable to control themselves though). It strikes a shaky balance between anime and realism that is frankly a bit alienating. The characters are also very Japanese, VERY Japanese, in both look and emotion. Cloud has a suspicious resemblance to Gackt, for good or ill.

All in all, I am very glad to have stumbled upon this today. It is something I was not really following and I probably wouldn't waste time downloading (I also don't like watching movies on my computer), but was worth it. I also don't buy bootleg movies and CDs, but made the exception to test the waters here. It was actually packaged quite nicely with a cool little insert and CD label. Done with care, most likely by the guys at the store, who were pretty cool too.

I will most likely get it on UMD for my collection anyway.

And to answer my question. Why? Fanservice, well executed.

Someone explained that effect to me once, if I recall correctly it's called the "uncanny phenomenom". It's when you try to make something look as close to human as you can, but if you get it just a tad "off", not even "off" enough that anyone could consciously point to what's wrong with it, instead of getting a facsimile of a human being, you get something which strikes people as a sick, deformed animal Something that shouldn't be alive but appears to be despite what your instinct is telling you.

THAT was the problem with the problem with the first movie. Marionettes kissing. *shudder*. People rejected it deep in their subconscious as not real enough to accept as real, not cartoony enough to accept as cartoony.

I don't know how, maybe because there was more action, but FFVII:AC seems to have come closer to beating the problem than FF:TSW did.

Oh, and this movie isn't just for FFVII fanpersons, it's for animation fanpersons as well, hell, even more so.

I watched it, loved it, and any FF fan should watch it. Everyone that I have talked to at college said it was excellent and only wish it was longer with more scenes of the side characters. I want the soundtrack NOW!

Anyone worrying about the quality, if you get the DVDR its a DVD rip anamorphic widescreen. I think it even has 5.1 surround sound. Anyways, its top quality stuff.

I bought a subbed copy, and just got it yesterday (I couldn't wait for the state side release). I love the movie and thought they did a really good job on it. I like the action sequences and the plot isn't to bad either. The cell phone ringer caught me by suprise too. I'm wanting to get the box set now but have to wait to get some money.
