View Full Version : A question about collecting and rechargable batteries...

I was just wondering something. Say I wanted to keep a few portable game systems untouched in their boxes and they include lithium rechargable batteries (GBA, DS, PSP, N-Gage), will they eventually go bad from not being used at all? Will they leak? Does anybody know?

How long are you planning on keeping these systems in their boxes? Forever? Or saving them and selling them?
If it's a few years, you should be fine. If it is twenty years, then you may want to think about it. For certain, the batteries will eventually die. Even rechargables, over time will diminish in the amount of a charge that they can hold.
As for leaking, I believe that they shouldn't because they don't actually have acid in them. But of course, no guarantees (someone can correct me if I'm wrong...). So this all goes back to the first question I guess...
If you're planning on keeping them in their boxes forever as part of a collection, then you shouldn't worry about it I don't think. If you want to hold onto them for ten years and sell them, then the batteries probably won't work.
Then again, the person buying it sealed from you probably won't care much anyway, and you could even say that there are "no guarantees with the battery since it is now 10 years old" or whatever.

Well, I was thinking a few years at least. Heck, I may open them up in 5 or so years, just to enjoy a brand spanking new handheld...once again :) Thanks for the info!

Now I don't know what I'm really talking about, but in my mind I would think that the batteries would be fine as long as they were never charged in the first place. In other words brand new. But like I said I really don't know anything about these so called "batteries."

No problem. Just confirm the batteries are dry cells (I'm about 95% positive they are...)
If that's the plan, I'd suggest just waiting to buy a PSP or DS. They'll both have to come down in price by that time, and I'm sure they'll still be for sale :D

Sure, but the GBA and N-Gage will probably not be. At least I know abit more on the battery situation. Thanks again for the replies folks!
