This just became my next PS2 purchase. Maybe even before We Cardiopulmonary Organ Katamari!

Though I wonder what happened to original Qix? I see Super Qix, and the original Qix was on that PS1 Taito budget import collection I got some time back, but I don't see original Qix here. :?

Qix is also on the Space Invaders plag-and-play. It is strange that it isn't on this collection, since it is a classic (I'm sure many more people are familiar with it than something like "Exzisus") and it couldn't take up much more than 10K on the disc.

Man, this is coming out around the same time as the Capcom disc... hopefully, I'll be working so I can get these...

Hopefully, Operation Wolf will have light gun support. Though, if Qix is not included, maybe Taito and Sega are thinking about a second collection, filled with Qix and nummy Darius action?

In case anybody's wondering about the price, it's going to be $19.99.

Another title I'm planning to buy this fall, and it'll be the fourth classic game compilation purchase in a two month span for me (I bought the first Namco Museum for GBA this week, I'll be getting Midway Arcade Treasures 3 when I pick up LA Rush, and I'll be getting Capcom Classics Collection upon release).

Looks to be the same lineup as the PAL version that's just come out here.

There are games on the Western release missing from the TWO Japanese volumes and vice versa. Guess you really need all three to get all the games ;)

The PAL version isnt published by sega, its published by a company that typically releases budget games (xplosiv i think), or is it?

In any case, ill be having a good look at it when it hits store shelves here :)

To add to the list of complaints, I'm not going to complain about a missing game..but the missing support for GameCube. Sega (out of all the third parties) has been particularly kind to the GameCube this generation..what happened?

I've been quietly picking up all the arcade compilations that have come out on my GameCube, and it's a shame that this one is going to miss it.

They are only publishing it, not developing it, so no Gamecube version is out of their hands.

I just heard about this in Hardcore Gamer magazine but they had a few more games listed, one of them including Bubble Symphony and Dungeon Magic. Now this site isn't listing them. For the love of God, PLEASE include Bubble Sympony.. argh.

chrisbid

no original elevator action either

but that is still a good lineup of certified hits mixed with a good portion of novelties and obscure games, with room to spare for a second collection :)

Still a shame though; guess that dusty old PS2 will get some love in the near future.

What? No Darius???!?!?!?! BOOO!!!! I wanna shoot giant space fish.

Hmm I though Darius IS on there.. Darius Gaiden on Taito Memories Joukan, and G Darius is on Taito Memories Gekan

To be quite honest I find it a little confusing myself. Because there are 2 releases in the Jap market. And now there is this Western version which Mayhem above says has 2 more games involved. For example I see ZOOKEEPER on that list and that is definitely not on the Jap discs because believe you me.. I have looked. x_x

So in addition to the western list. Someone needs to make a list of what each of the japs ones have. Hopefully this is accurate :P

Maybe this is one release where you HAVE to get all the imports as well as the local versions! :hmm:

That would be much better. The US pack is a complete joke. The stuff that I would want it for (if there was a GC version anyway) is missing.

I really wish there was a GC version. I guess I'll just have to buy the Saturn, PCE, etc. versions of the stuff I'm missing. I've already been doing that for some time anyway.

I wouldn't expect much from Taito these days. They used to be among the greatest, but now they might as well not exist.

I just don't like enough PS2 games to take a chance on another one crapping out on me.

Though admittedly that would be cheaper (Mizubaku Daibouken and Elevator Action Returns are not cheap).

If you have a JP PS2 the JP collections are a great deal though.

I'm not disappointed there's no GameCube version. I AM disappointed there's no PSP version. I will never again buy an arcade compilation on a console. It's portable only from now on.

So unless they decide to put a Taito collection on the PSP (And I really REALLY hope they do. I would kill for the arcade version of Bubble Bobble on a handheld.) I say "screw you, Sega and Taito." :/

Still bum out no Elevator Action Returns.

I know i could get it for the Saturn, but if it was on Taito Legends it would be convenient for me.

Or i could just import Taito Memorise and get my PS2 modded.

Again U.S gamers get... screwed every time on domestic release

From what I've been hearing, the package in the West is actually being developed by a different team to that who did the Japanese releases, and the emulation is crap. Hence it's put a friend of mine right off, as he's been reviewing the PAL Xbox version at the moment. He doesn't have a PS2 (which is the only format the Japanese releases came in) so he's right pissed off at the moment.

Atomic Planet?! Dammit, so much for buying this one. I was actually kind of looking forward to it, too.

The reports of shitty emulation don't surprise me; these are the people who entirely removed Megaman 7's ending on the Anniversary Collection because they couldn't emulate it right. I'd hate to see what they do with Taito's games.

Finally, a decent version of PHOENIX (I'll avoid saying arcade-perfect as we all know how these things go.)

I'd say the same for Elevator Action, but it's hidden on Elevator Action Returns for Saturn.

No, if I could just play VANGUARD i'd be happy.

I'm definitely going to go ahead and get the U.S. version, and I was thinking about getting the two Japanese Taito Memories imports as well... before I did that (and either modify my PS2 somehow or buy a Japanese Ps2), I'd like to know how many of those games are on MAME. Anybody know offhand? If there are a significant number from each that aren't on MAME (or even just a couple of really good ones each), I'll go ahead and order both imports. (The romset and version of MAME I'm using is from around June 2003.)

k8track
10-17-2005, 10:11 PM
Follow-up post. When I got home after work today, I checked the list of games in the two Japanese Taito Memories compilations against what I had in MAME. It seems almost all of them are emulated in MAME, and the few I didn't have seem to be in later versions (I hope to get an XBox with the latest version of MAME soon). So there are probably only a couple that aren't on MAME.

Bottom line--can anyone who has bought these two compilations tell me if it's worth it or not? (Not only would I spend $100 on two games but also a fair amount either doing something to my PS2 or getting a Japanese one.) Is the emulation of the games smoother and more accurate than MAME? Is it worth it for all the extra bells and whistles (if they're there)? For example, I've got all the Namco Museums for the PS1 and they're worth having (despite being able to play all the games in MAME) because of the cool 3-D Museum and extra info; likewise, the "Arcade's Greatest Hits" series is equally cool because of the video interview snippets. But if there's nothing extra to be had on these discs--if it's just a straight-up compilation of games--then it would seem not to be worth it. (Last week, in a fit of giddiness, I did go ahead and order Taito Memories Gekan from Lik-Sang. Ack! I may very well go ahead and turn around and resell it just to break even.)

Taito Legends finally came out this week. Got my copy yesterday and I can say this is one of the best classic compilations I've ever played. Crammed full of great games and some nice sleepers that I've never played before either (Electric Yo-Yo, Gladiator). What sold me was that Zoo Keeper is included on it which I believe marks the first time this game has been released on a home console.

Another thing I love about this game is that it has virtually no loading times at all (at least for the Xbox version, I don't know anything about the PS2). There is a load screen that last a couple seconds when you turn the game on, but after that all the games load up almost instantly. You don't see any load screens when backing out of games either.

I thought using the Controller S would be awkward for the light gun games like Operation Wolf and Space Gun but they are very easy to play with them. Cursors move around at just the right speed. Not too slow, not too fast.

My only complaint is that there is no scoreboards feature for Live. It's not a big deal but it would have been nice to have. Regardless, this compilation is an incredible deal at only $20. Buy it now!

The emulation dosen't seem to bad, though some games like Phoenix do feel spead-up to me(I love this game), load times are very fast for once :D

I picked this up last night, too. Totally worth it. It's about damned time Zoo Keeper got a proper console release. Heh. I haven't played every game on it yet, but all the ones I tried seemed to run more or less exactly how they should. Even that Continental Circus game looked pretty decent, which is impressive considering that games with pseudo-3D road rendering can be a little troublesome at times. My only complaints: no button remapping, and no true light gun support (unless it's just undocumented).

And what is tate mode? The ability to flip your monitor is the only thing I can think of, but it's hard to say with such a stupid non descript term as tate mode?

Umm...it might not be so stupid and non-descript if you speak Japanese from which the term originiated. As everyone has noted, Tate (pronounced Tah-teh) mode is where you flip your TV vs. Yoko which is the traditional horizontal orientation. My guess as to why there isn't an Engligh equivalent is most games get stripped of this feature when they make the trip across the ocean, so most gamers who know it know it from Japanese imports. Plus, people just like to be otaku and say Japanese words like it makes them cool or something.

Actually, if that's Japanese, then it's pronounced more like "tah-tay".

But yeah, I did some quick dictionary searches, and found these:
yoko: width
tate: height

Well I'll be damned. It actually sorta works. In the XBox version, apparently the position of the light gun is just interpreted as analog axes. So if you set the analog control to Absolute, it almost works enough to be playable. Heh. The only problem is that there's really no way to calibrate it.

I keep getting DREs on mine. :( I can't express how disappointed I was. I really wanted to play Bubble Bobble again. I'll see what I can do about returning it. I don't know where the receipt is.

just got home with this baby. I can not wait to play me some Rainbow Islands and Super Qix :D

Also, tate mode is more or less pointless on modern consoles. On the Saturn and Playstation it was handy for displaying games in their native resolutions, but modern consoles can display all of the pixels just dandy without stuff looking distorted/squashed. The only real downside is that you don't fill your screen, but that's not really an issue unless you have a widescreen tv...heh...suddenly your widescreen tv ain't so big no more.. :)

still gotta order the second volume of Taito Arcade Memories, too... hrm... these discs are just too damn badass :(

My other thread got locked before I could reply. After the glowing recommendations, I went right back out and picked this up. Been playing the HELL out of Zoo Keeper. Forgot what a great lil' game this is.

Anybody here thinks N. KIDS have some stereotypes in the game? what's with the NEW Z. STORY sending your birdie to heaven to meet a some type god-like figure then back to the underworld?

Umm...it might not be so stupid and non-descript if you speak Japanese from which the term originiated. As everyone has noted, Tate (pronounced Tah-the)

Actually, if that's Japanese, then it's pronounced more like "tah-tay".

But yeah, I did some quick dictionary searches, and found these:
yoko: width
tate: height

More like "tah-t.eh". Apparently, there is a filter on "t.eh", automatically correcting it to "the".

Tah tah!

Then that explains why Capt.'s Romanization struck me as so nonsensical looking. ;-)

Late to the party per usual...

I found a copy of this for $10 at Best Buy, and I must say this is a nice collection.

Bubble Bobble
Elevator Action
Gladiator
Jungle Hunt
Phoenix
Rastan
Zoo Keeper

Are the highlights for me, particularly Gladiator and Zoo Keeper! I wish that Arkanoid was on here, perhaps there will be a Vol. 2...

Cheers,
Ben

Vol. 2 is supposed to come out at the end of this month in Europe. Don't know about a US release date yet. More information, including the list of games and a trailer, can be found here:

Unfortunately, no Arkanoid. However, Qix (the original), Front Line, and Wild Western are on the list.

Seeing this hit US shores would address a lot of my omission gripes with the first volume. And make my copy of Taito Memories Gekan slightly redundant in places. LOL
