I can't believe Unreal is already 7 years old. I was playing through it again tonight and it's just such a great game. It gets annoying at times, but overall a groundbreaking game, in my opinion.

It still looks fantastic if you install the s3tc textures from the second Unreal Tournament disc, too. Some of the geometry looks basic by today's standards, of course, but the game still looks beautiful overall.
The Sunspire's interior remains one of my least favorite levels though. Don't know why, I just never really liked it. I love the level leading up to it and the level after it, though.

What are these? An update of some sort? Not that Unreal looked bad to begin with, but it would be cool for an update of sort like they did with Half-Life 1 Source. Last I recall, Unreal was unplayable unless you had a 3DFX Voodoo card of some sort installled. I assume they patched that to allow nVidia and ATi drivers?
Also, has anyone played Unreal II? I recently picked it used at EB for $5, and was thinking about playing it next. I need to cure my FPS fix and have it, Pariah and Half-Life 1 Source on the table.

Agree, Unreal is a great game still. The enviorment makes the areas feel deserted (except for the monsters). Great bosses too.

These high-resolution textures were made available on the second (bonus) Unreal Tournament CD. But, you could only install and use them with a certain make of graphics card. The name escapes me at the moment, though the clue is in the "S3". It was made feasible by extra memory, or something like that, which wasn't available on other cards.

The original Half-Life is always worth a second play. Or a third, or fourth. I haven't tried Pariah, though Unreal II is probably worth your time.

Unreal 2 is also worth checking out, but its far from as good as Unreal 1 imo. I played through both and find them both good.
I enjoyed Unreal 1 more. Unreal 2 have more story which doesnt give the true unreal feeling. Maybe thats why I liked Unreal 1 more.

You can use any OpenGL card for it, anymore. You just need the latest opengl renderer

I love it when a game has good community support. Support for Rune and Deus Ex also means much love.
edit - Unreal II isn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be. It starts off pretty well but much like Halo it gets extremely mediocre in the middle before coming out really strong in the end. At the prices it goes for anymore, I strongly recommend checking it out; it's worth a playthrough.
and Half Life. Shit. Half Life rocks. The only part of Half Life I didn't like was the level right before you go to Xen and you have to defend the portal or whatever...beyond that, the game was damn near flawless. The Source version is even sexier, especially now with people rebuilding the entire original game in Source. Hot hot hot.
tangent - Day of Defeat Source is currently preloading on Steam. hope ya'll got the HL2 Silver/Gold packages :)

Just so you young whipper-snappers know the Original Unreal is an Amiga game by Ubisoft released in 1990, designed to be a Shadow of the Beast killer...

I never really liked either game, though Shadow of the Beast had awesome music and graphics. Unreal...eh... just didn't like it. :(

I don't think you could at the time, though. Am I wrong?

I hope they finish that remake. It would rock my world.

Hmm, initially you couldn't, but then nvidia added support for s3tc textures to their detonator driver set so that people with geforce-class cards could bask in the goodness for Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 and I believe ATI followed suit not long afterwards, but I wasn't all that interested in ATI's side of the world until the 9700 came out so I really don't know the specifics on that :(
edit - looks like the support came in early 2000 (http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/detonator508/default.asp), just a few months after Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament were released.

Unreal 2 absolutely sucks compared to the first Unreal. The original Unreal had imaginative level-design (thanks to everyone's favorite CLIFFY B), superb music, fun weapons, and challenging enemies / scenarios. To top it all off, it had NALI FRUITS!
Unreal 2 changed the entire gameplay. The weapons were now generic shooter crap (no more snot gun), the whole ammo / hit ratio was scaled down (in Unreal 1 it took a LOT of hits to kill a guy, and you obtained a lot of ammo - Unreal 2 you die and your enemies die from like 1-2 hits, which is no fun), the levels were anything but imaginative...it just blows completely. There are also no Nali and there's no mysterious ambience like the 1st one had.
Play another good shooter instead, like Tron 2.0. That is the best FPS that I have played for the PC since Unreal. Well, not better than Deus Ex and System Shock 2, but it was still very good.
The music for the original Unreal is available via BITTORRENT, I might add - and fine music it is. I love Bittorrent for VG music.

Well I wouldn't say unplayable as I got pretty far when it came out. But it was too damn hard for it's own good and I'd say it was unbeatable!
