View Full Version : What's the most you would pay for a single game?

Just curious - I'm noticing that pricing on some of these things are getting ridiculous, so I thought that I would ask the question:

How much would you pay for a single game (loose or complete), and what game/system would it be for?

This includes ALL systems - 2600 era to present.

Perhaps I am naive here, but I think that some of these prices are just outright crazy. Perhaps some replies will change my perception of what is a "good price" or not.

For me, probably $40-$50 at the most. Anything higher can do without my money till they lower their prices.

For me, my ideal range is under $40. I rarely buy any game over $30 even. I've only ever made 2 exceptions that I recall, and that was getting Qb limited edition (cost me just over $100 CDN with shipping), and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 on boxing day ($66 CDN with tax)

Though, in the near future, I'll be upping the limit to about $65 when I get my gamecube, because I'm too impatient to wait for Mario Party 4 to drop in price ;)

i'll be dropping 125 on panzer dragoon saga soon. so i guess that much.

In CAD, $80 - which is the most a new game for today's consoles goes for. No matter what Wind Waker goes for (mostly likely $70) I'll be picking it up come hell or high water.

For the most part I set a different limit based on the console. $80 for new games but I won't spend more than $30 say on N64 games (which is why I haven't gotten any recently - they're still over $30.

At the lowest end is the VCS. I'd pay maybe $10 for a game with rarity that I *really* wanted, but for the most part I don't go over $5 for that machine.

(all prices in CAD, which, probably, is about $5 USD at most :D )

if i could afford it, there are games that i would pay 4000+ for. right now the most i could pay for a single game would be a couple hundred.

I'm trying to get a complete saturn collection and when I still need one game, I won't wait till I find it at my price and just pay the price it goes for ebay. Luckily I already have most of the expensive ones.

I have a complete Quadrun. I think that sums up how much I pay for items: in some cases, as much as it takes @_@

For really good must have games like PSO or Metroid Prime for GC, I'd go as high as $50 and the lowest advertised price usually wins. ;)

For used games, probably $20 at most unless it's really good and desireable at the same time (ie Panzer Dragon Saga for Saturn) than I may go as high as $50.

I've paid up to $200 before for a game. That's about the max I'd ever even consider paying, and VERY few games would make me want to pay that much. I'd say on the average I'd pay $30-70 US depending on the game. Ususally...I'm cheap and won't pay over $40 unless it's impressive tho! LOL

Depends on the system for me.

Most for a 2600 cart - $75
Most for a Vectrex cart - $75
Most for an NES cart - $15
Most for an arcade game- $150

And, of course, the usual $45-$55 for a brand new PS2/GC/Xbox game.

You see, "insane price" is in the eyes of the beholder. You wanna talk nuts, check out the price on Neo Geo games. Holy MOses....

Most I've paid for a game was 500 for my MK2 cab.

Most I've paid for a console game was 130, and yep it was a neo geo game. That number might increase soon though.

$30 is my limit on everything except for games I know I will still be playing heavily in a year (Tony Hawk, other Sports games, Monkey Ball...)

Everything else can wait.

I guess $40, though it would have to be a new game I really wanted for me to pay that. More than $20 for a single game only happens about once a year for me.

$3000-$4000 for gold NWC, and that's it. Next highest would be an unreleased NES proto or a grey for $1000-$2000.

I paid 4k for a gold NWC cart.

I can't think of any single game I would consider more valuable so I guess thats the limit for now.

I liked better when eBay had gold NWC for *under* $1000 and a grey one for about $500. It had been only 3 years ago. Back then I had a chance to get one and I was sniped at the last minute. Not a few dollars difference but $100 difference.

I generally don't spend too much on single games. I pay the standard prices for new games. I do try to find the best prices. I have a stack of newer games I haven't even touched yet though. X_x I think about 20 to 30 for something used if I really want it. I'd go pretty high if it was something I really wanted. I have never gone out and spent over 100 on a single game yet. My collection is small enough where I still can find used games which I need at good prices. Maybe one day I will be willing to spend more, but for now I stick to the low end stuff.

The most I have paid was $70 for Battle Garegga Saturn and that was a bit of an impulse buy.

My limit is usually around $20 because I'm cheap.

Also, I have a really hard time paying more than a few dollars for anything pre-16 bit. That's just me tho, and I enjoy the hunt.

$75 for the JAP version of Smash. Bros. Waste of money now that I look back on it.

Aswald
01-25-2003, 02:21 PM
That would depend on two things: what game are we talking about, and how much money do I have to spend on it?

If it is an ultra-rare or a real "find" of a game (CV Phaser Patrol or a completed Tunnels and Trolls) I might go up to 75 dollars. This isn't as crazy as it sounds- in 1982/1984, such games would've gone for about $35-$45 , which would be about $70 in today's money.

This, of course, assumes I HAVE $75.00 to spend...

Goblin
01-25-2003, 04:00 PM
I would say $40 and that would cover both current releases and games I want in my collection. Exceptions to this are Bounty Bob for the 8-bit which I'll possibly go as high as $100.

I feel that many people get some of their stuff at Funcoland/Gamestop stores relatively cheap. Since they seem to be phasing out their "older" system games, that may no longer be an option.

My point is, if you live in a city like I do (Austin, TX) - where there aren't any thrift stores or Goodwill stores that have ANY games to speak of, you rely on the Funcoland/Gamestop.

Now, I will have to visit eBay more and more, which means more $$$ for the games that I need. Therefore, the amount I am willing to spend increases due to lack of shopping venues. It really blows.

I read an old Sean Kelly article describing the transition from casual collector to obsessive collector, and he couldn't be more right (unfortunately.) 6 months ago, I would never have paid $50 for a NES game. Now it just depends...

Arqueologia_Digital
02-01-2003, 09:41 PM
I think that depends on the system, but the maxium that i have payed for a game was $ 20 (20 pesos, about 7 dollars) for the Out run 3D for SMS, i think it was cheap also. :P

I paid $2700 for my NWC Gold, and I doubt I'll ever pay more for a game....I may sometime pay $1000 for some other ultra rare holy grail...I'd like to get a nice grey NWC in the $800-$1500 range, but It'll probably be a while until I get one.

$60 to $70CDN for ANY new game (maybe $80CDN but it better be good!)

I paid $88CDN (after tax) for SFC III for the PC last year on one of the first days it was out. I had to drive to a neighbouring city to find it too. It could have been a better game, but the multiplayer component was (and still is) so buggy it was practically unplayable. About 5 or 6 months after release, a beta patch was released and that was all. That was when I lost faith in Activision. >:(

For those of you wondering what the hell that had to do with anything, it is the reason I will not buy anything over $60 to $70CDN.

Considering what I collect for, my single-game price limit will probably be in the $200 range, considering how much those special-edition Bombman games go for on the TG. Really though, not much higher than $200 for any single game.

I don't collect for stuff that's too-pricey so I think I'll be ok.

Most I've paid for a game was $90AU (down under) for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for the Amiga.

With the ammount of software around now though I guess my highest would be about $50AU. I'd only break that for games I absolutely had to have (like Front Mission 3.) Otherwise, playing the waiting game really pays off for me.

$200 on eBay or from another collector.
$30 in the wild although there are rare cases where I might make an exception.

I'm with maxlords on this one, although my average is more like $20-50. I'm guessing it was Radiant Silvergun that set max back "up to $200 before". THAT GAME, Steel Battalion, Battle Garegga, Twinkle Star Sprites, and Klonoa:DTP (!) are the only games I can think of off-hand that have cost me more than $50. I've been balking at buying Batsugun for the last several months because the street price of $40 combined with $12 shipping IS AN OUTRAGE! Don't even talk to me about Zanac X Zanac.

The most I ever paid for just one game was US$40,00.
Chrono Trigger, 1996.

Fantastic game, nice investment!!!

Nowadays I would pay fourty bucks in one complete Final Fantasy III only.

Crazy that I missed this so far.

I really don't have price limits for a single game: if I want it, I'll save up for it (that is important, though). So far my record for a single purchase is $233, I think I spent more than that on Samurai Spirits IV from Butta, though ($270-ish?)

This depends on a couple of things. The first is based on a percent of its preceived value. That value is usuall based on the average final price on ebay. Usually about 50% to 60%.

The second is the source of the money. If it is from my paycheck then I'm a little more stingy. If it is from my ebay sales then I tend to be a little more free with my spending.

Dollar wise, this usually amounts to a maximum of $200.

Paid $110 for Panzer Dragoon Saga a few years ago. I really can't see paying more than that for a game unless it had major perepherals (Steel Battalion) or was an arcade game (I'd gladly pay up to $1000 if I had it for a deluxe OutRun arcade, and I'd pay whatever to get a fresh arcade version of Guilty Gear Isuka when it hits).

Most I ever paid was for a sealed action 52 nes, 115, second highest wasn't even close (53 bubble bobble 2 just recently yay!... man that game has gone down in value)

I have traded large amounts for certain games but as far as cash goes I haven't shelled out too much for any particular game....

The most I ever payed for a game was Swordquest Waterworld (2600, loose) for 80. But on the other hand I got Off Your Rocker (Prototype) in a cheap lot on ebay. It was a mystery game with no label, so you can bet I was surprised when it turned out to be a 100 dollar game.

Ask me this a year ago, and I wouldve said that I'd never pay more than $60 for a game. But now that I've gotten a NEO, breaking into the $100-$200 price range doesnt seem so crazy anymore although I've yet to do it.

The most that I've ever paid so far was $100, but I'm trying to save up for one I want that's gonna cost me about $250, so I guess I'll pay that much. But really, it depends on what it takes to get it, and whether or not I have the money for it. I'd pay alot more than that for some old titles, if I had the money. But nowadays, I'll only pay top dollar for old titles that I don't have.

I paid $100 for Phantasy Star 4 brand new when it first came out, and I also paid $100 for Virtua Racing when it first came out for Genesis, only to have it eclipsed by Virtua Racing 32X for about $50, which I also bought as soon as it first came out. I didn't sell my Genesis version when I got the 32X version like most people did though, because I figured that it might be a rare title someday, because most people did sell it. The Genesis version won't work with the 32X, so it was kinda redundant to have both. But I'm glad that I didn't sell it, because I can play the Genesis version on my Nomad, but the 32X version won't work with it, so I can still enjoy both versions anytime.

Gee, is that game REALLY that rare? Those things were everywhere here in Houston when I bought mine brand new, back in the day, so I find it kinda hard to believe that they really only produced 1500 of them. If that's true, then most of them must've ended up in Houston and other major cities. I guess I should've bought a whole case of the things. If only I had known!
