Genesis is Picky about Power Adapter

Sega really should have thought about this,anyway My Genesis Model 1,wont accept anything except the Sega 1602 9V 1.2A Adapter. I tryed the Nintendo NES adapter and it just flickers on screen.I tryed another 9V adapter 100ma and it dint do nothing,it dint turn on. So i plug back in the orginal adapter and it works fine. Why ask for help well i got a Sega CD Model 1 and from what i read either you get the right adapter or something will blow. So im stuck with a lifeless Sega CD (meaning without the adapter) and a picky Genesis, anyone know why its doing that?

The 100mA adaptor is obviously too weak to work for the 1.2A Genesis. Other than that, I wasnt aware that the Genesis would run off of a NES power supply. Remember, the NES supply outputs AC power.

Ok you've got two things, voltage and current.

The Genesis I believe has an internal voltage regulator, so you can use a 9v adaptor and I believe anything up to about 12v safely.

As long as the plug fits, the voltage is within 9-12v and the current (amps, A) is the same, then it should work.

As already said, 100mA is 100 miliamps e.g. 0.1A so obviously too little current.

A NES adaptor outputs DC however.. erm.. thats why its called an adaptor? It takes AC from your wall socket and turns it into the voltage that the system uses!

Try looking for another adaptor at a yard sale or flea market, just something thats from 9v to 12v and has the same current as the Genesis 1 adaptor..

Then you should be set...

Would recommend using the Genesis 1 official adaptor on the Sega CD if you do this however..

Just to make sure everybody understands:

DON'T USE A NES ADAPTER IN A GENESIS OR SEGA CD!!!

A U.S. NES adapter is AC -> AC. It will attempt murder on any console that you plug it in to (except a NES, Odyssey2, or other uncommonly AC-inputting console).

Buy another 9V 1.2A DC adapter for your SegaCD.

It must be power hungry i just pluged an AC to DC 12VDC 850mA and it still dint work. So what would be the minimum for it to work because i see a 9V 1200mA at radioshack. I bet that would that work?

I hate to bring what could be bad news, but plugging in an NES adaptor my have fried your Genesis. Afterall, Alternating Current (AC) can be really strong (and that is what would kill people, not DC). Hope that your Genesis didn't get fried.

I've got one of those and it works fine for my genesis model 1 or SMS.

Hmm i opened my Genesis and seen no black or brown parts, i guesss its not fried because it still works.

If it doesn't work still, you may have to replace to voltage regulator.

This supply should work. Do you have the polarity set correctly on the tip?

um well genesis aka megadrive use a different kind of powersupply configuration then snes so dont use the snes powersupply the sega uses a DC adaptor that runs on 9-12V (u can use up to 25V without any problems) and about 1A with a negative voltage on the center pin. (this can varay on different types of regions NTSC,PAL not sure but last i checked it had the - in the middle like all other US consoles seem to have.)

By using a NES AC power adaptor in your DC Genny, you proably ruind it beyond ever working again.

Odd thing is, has anyone else ever attempted to use a Genesis adaptor on a Nintendo? I have a couple of Genny adaptors that actually work, and I do not see how it is even possible as the NES, i though, ran off of AC current!? I actualy only got 1 official NES AC adaptor, so when I take my NES somewhere, I take a good Gen DC adaptor, and it works! How the flip does it work!?

I was bored one day and tried a NES adaptor on one of my Gens, and that Gen has never worked since.

Glad to know that you got your Genny working again! Genesis is one awsome system! :)

The quick-n-dirty explaination is that:

The NES converts AC to DC internally. Since a Genesis PS already outputs DC, it simply "strolls right on through" the AC-DC converter.
