I wonder how many of these were made, and if they were made for other systems?

Thanks for the list, I have unfortunately only one of them.

A related Q: does someone have a list of all promotional VHS-tapes from Nintendo?

I was and I am a subscriber of Nintendo Power, and I got the five following tapes:

Donkey Kong Country (title on box: "Enter the Jungle...Nov.21) 1994

Nintendo 64 ("Change the System. Launch Date Sept. 29") 1996.

"Star Fox 64. Launch Date June 30, 1997." 1997

Diddy Kong Racing ("Get Ready! For the Must-Have Title of the Year! The Adventure Begins November 24th, 1997") 1997.

Nintendo 64 ("Hot Newz64. Nsiders Guide to N64") 1999.

Are there tapes missing?

The only other tapes I have are

"Street Fighter II Turbo. Hit Turbo Speed!" (Probably sent by Capcom. The address with my name (with typo) is from my GamePro subscription) 1993.

"Squaresoft on Playstation. Collector's Video. Exclusive Final Fantasy VII Interviews, Bushido Blade, Final Fantasy Tactics, Saga Frontier, and more!" 1997.

I remember running across one for Top Gear Rally for the N64, yep, here I am kicking myself for not buying it.

Ugh, the stupid things I do.

Currently, I have 16 Game Player's GameTapes in my possession, which consist of an alternate (Proto?) Vol 1 No 1 tape and a tape designated solely for SMB2. I don't have current pictures but can provide them as I get free time to take them.

I received a Nintendo Power Banjo-Kazooie VHS tape in 1998. It was narrated by Jon Lovitz.

There was also a Nintendo Power promotional tape for Pokemon just before the game was released in the USA. It talked about both the game and the anime and what they were about.

I believe I have all the Gametapes ripped and uploaded but Volume 11, which I haven't found yet. The alternate volume 1, I'm not sure if it has different content on it. If so I'll have to get that one too obviously:

Plenty of other random old game VHS in here too:

Sixteen, wow. I thought I had the complete collection of 12. What are the 13-16? I'd love to see pics, including the proto!

I think I have most of them. The copy I picked up for gameboy had a broken cassette, which I tried to fix, gave up, and years later threw away the parts. Also didn't know there was a 14, 15, 16. I think I'm missing one in the 8 or 9ish range. Some day I'll complete the set.

The alternate volume 1, I'm not sure if it has different content on it. If so I'll have to get that one too obviously:

While I've never seen it myself, I've heard from people who have that the only new content on Prototype Volume 1 is a ten minute segment on Super Mario Bros. I believe that it (along with the SMB 2 tape) was recalled because ABC/Signal didn't obtain the rights to use Nintendo properties in their videos--hence its rarity.

16 and counting...

I think 16 is about it. I've heard rumors of a 17th tape (ANOTHER prototype Vol. 1 No. 1) that contains a segment on the first Mega Man game, but I question the veracity of such claims.

In terms of pictures--yes, please! I know that I for one would love to see what the cover of Prototype Vol. 1 No. 1 looks like--and hope to one day see at least the SMB segment on youtube (if I recall, the other three games are supposed to be on other tapes, so they're obviously of less interest).

I've got a few of the Nintendo ones and the Squaresoft one. Dunno why I got them, they just came in the mail sometimes, guess I was on a list somewhere. I didn't even watch most of them.

Here's one that might test the memories, research skills, and sanity of the people in this thread...

Back in the late 1980s (let's say between 1987 and 1989), Toys R Us had an NES promo kiosk that sat in the video game aisle. The thing was meant to allow folks to look up and preview upcoming or existing NES titles, such as Kid Icarus and Punch-Out!! (the two I remember specifically), by pressing buttons on the side of the console--but I'm pretty sure the thing used a VHS tape.

Does anyone else remember this thing?

I remember that sort of thing. I don't know what kinda tech was used, but it seems like VHS would be a problem, since it would need to have random access to whichever video was selected, and VHS is not very good for that sort of thing. Yet it's far too early for DVD, and PC's weren't really powerful enough for real video then either, so maybe a laserdisc?

No computer at the time would waste its energy trying to render decent video. The video has to be coming from an LD player. LD Players existed already that were capable of that action. VHS would require some sort of multi-deck VHS machine indexed seek function. That sounds amazing custom and would still be subject to ridiculous mechanical wear on the unit AND the tapes. Or, they could just use an LD playe which already existed at the time.

I love promo videos, but this one. This one. My god. I hope they weren't all destoryed.

I herped the derp bigtime--of course! Laserdisc makes sense now that you folks point it out.

Anyway, the one thing I remember most clearly about these promo videos is how the games were organized--Kid Icarus and Metroid fell into the silver-boxed "classics" collection, while the original Mario Bros. and Pinball were under the "arcade" banner. I believe this was significant because it let you search by genre.
