TOKYO, June 22, Reuter - Nintendo Co Ltd will start selling a powerful new 16-bit video game computer with software in Japan from November 21, a company spokesman said.

The Super Famicom will be launched with three related software packages, including Super Mario Brothers 4, and will eventually also be sold in the U.S. and Europe at a date yet to be decided, he said. The software will not be compatible with its earlier game computers.

The computers will retail for 25,000 yen each and games programs for 7,000 to 8,000 each. Monthly sales are projected at 300,000 computers.

The computer offers much sharper resolution than Nintendo's Famicon, which has an eight-bit controller, and can display up to 32,768 colours, against 52 for the Famicon. It uses a one-megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) microchip, the spokesman said.

The Kyoto-based Nintendo hopes to launch at least one new game for the new computer every month from next year, and plans to form licensing agreements with 33 software writing companies to meet this goal, he said.

It has sold 40 million game computers and 350 million games worldwide since launching the Famicon in 1983.
