Hey all,

Just wondering if you guys think that the Nintendo Revolution will make ebay prices plumbet(sp) dramatically since they will be able to download the games instead or will it make them go up?

Your thoughts.

It's not like that system is going to let you download every company's entire library for free. I would assume all the first party titles will be available, but the others? Heh.

Besides, emulation seems to have had a negligable effect on retrogame prices, and this isn't really any different from PC or Xbox emulation.

Nope, it'll only make it better. "OH MUH DOOD! WE GOT DA ORIGINAL MARIO TWINZ!!" and that 25 cent game....will become $1 instantly...

There was a poll, which may be of interest... Will the Revolution hurt the value of NES games (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62619).

Actually, I don't think it will hurt. Remember all of the popular 3rd party games? So, The Revolution won't hurt.

Its hard to tell. At first, I didn't think it would have.
But, think of this:
NES Toplaoders went for a good $100 all the time about 6 months ago. Aquiring one was usually pretty cool, and made people happy.
Now, with those weird stupid Famiclone toploader things, they've driven the price of a true toploader down drastically. $35-50 is a price I see Toploaders go for all the time now.
So, if you think of this in the terms of the Revolution, even though it ISN'T the origional, most people won't care, and won't want to buy origional NES games.

I think yes and no. I guess the more rare ones it will hurt, ONLY IF you can download them to your revolution. Otherwise, I don't see it hurting the value too much though.
The casual players won't be spending that much any more probably, but the collector's, or people that want the ACTUALLY game from the era, will still be buying as normal.

Also don't forget "hackers" will find a way to upload the roms to the console or maybe hack the site that it downloads from and change it to another one where they can download the complete library.

No.

People have been doing what Nintendo is about to do already for the last 6 years and some. It will flux a little bit then go back to normal give or take a few bucks.

Quality NES emulation has been around for almost 10 years now. I have been able to emulate just about every single NES and SNES game on my Xbox for around 3 years now. The Revolution is nothing new. Why would it change anything? I doubt that Nintendo's emulation will be as good, accurate, and compatible as the actual hardware. That, in my opinion, is the main reason why having the original is still better than emulation: emulation is still not 100%.

Though it is getting pretty close for the NES, with emulators like FCEUltra and Nintendulator. SNES emulation on the other hand is still far from perfect.

Nintendo will make a perfect emulator that will allow you to play all your past games. It will also allow them to hook them up to your tv without burning cds or any modifications. It already stopped me from buying some NES games. So yes it already started hurting it.

I love the fact that people decry emulation and releasing prototypes as 'lowering the original's value', whilst embracing the back-library od the Revolution.

That depends on your definition of "Hurting". As far as I'm concerned anything that lowers the price of classic games I want is a good thing.

QFT.

Kinda makes me wish I held off on acquiring my SNES RPG collection.

Yeah, good luck downloading Bubble Bath Babes on the Revolution. :P

Yeah, So what's the problem? Lower prices are a good thing for most people.

How do you know that Nintendo will make a perfect emulator? They will most likely only emulate a few of their popular games. So while you have been able to play almost every single NES and Famicom game on the Xbox (without any hardware modification, mind you)... you will most likely only be able to play the Nintendo made NES and Famicom games. You will not be able to play very many 3rd party games, nor unofficial English translations of Japanese games such as Final Fantasy 2, 3, and many other great games.

Also, it will be hell to play NES games using the Revolution controller. Give the fanboyism a break. The Revolution's NES support sounds like too little too late. Nintendo just wants to cash in on the popularity of NES emulation.
