PLAYING MASTER SYSTEM GAMES ON THE GENESIS JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT EASIER (for me, anyway.)

Yes, indeed. I've had some major issues playing Master System games lately. I've been using a frickin GAME GEAR to play them, and those of you who like shooters know that Master System shooters DO NOT play well on the Game Gear. The bullets are too small!

ANYWAY, I had no idea this little gadget existed until a week ago... a search on DP's online guide a moment ago shows it listed, though. I'm surprised I've never heard of it before now!Where have I been?

A little background info... I have a Master System console at home, but NONE of the cords I have will fit it! I've tried every cord for every console I had and no luck. I have a Power Base convertor, but it's two States away next to the Model 1 Genesis, the only model it will fit on anyway. So I've been reduced to playing Master System games on the Game Gear. It sucks.

I found this little "MEGA MASTER" gadget on Ebay when I was doing a very basic search for "Sega." Seems it came out in Europe but not in the US. I'd never heard of it and it's not in the printed guide. On a whim, I bid and won one for less than $10 shipped. I had no idea if it would work in a NTSC Genesis console, a CDX, or an X'Eye (my favorite Genny replacement since the regular Genny/Sega CD combo is too big and uses two cords and my CDX quit playing CD's and resets itself if you bump it slightly. The X'Eye is AWESOME.)

It came in the mail yesterday. I approached my X'Eye and inserted it into the cartridge hole with major misgivings... it fit perfectly! (Note to self... Master System carts fit in the X'Eye alone too, but they don't play. Odd.) I stuck in a Master System game and turned on the power... BAM! Instant success! It worked with every game I played, the picture is fantastic even with composite, and I had a marathon SMS session. The X'Eye booted up just like a regular Master System (and looked quite happy during the sexy copulation, I might add.) I suck at Power Strike II but excel at Rampart, by the way.

This handy little thing also fits in the CDX and regular model 2 Genesis.

Now I can play Genesis games, Sega CD, Master System, 32x (with the damn thing attached) and sing karaoke songs on my X'Eye. No more Game Gear, Power Base convertor, or plain 'ole Master System console with shitty cable RF hookups. The X'Eye outputs in both composite AND S-video!

Man, this thing is sweet.

Less than $10, man! The online guide gives it a value of 4 and a price of $8! They must be common as dirt in the UK. I recommend one highly. No lockouts!

So you won that Master Mega thing. I was going to bid on that, but I already had too many auctions going at the time.

Does it work for PAL and NTSC, anyone?

It works on either a PAL or NTSC machine... it was an auction out of London, and the device seems to have had most of its distribution in the UK. Now it's running on an NTSC X'Eye, and it worked fine on an NTSC Genesis, too.

I've never had a problem running any PAL Master System game on any NTSC machine. I've heard of isolated issues, but I've never seen one myself and I have played countless PAL games that never came out in the States. So many shooters! They (PAL SMS games) seem to be 99% compatible and I have no idea what the other 1% of the incompatible games would be. I wouldn't worry about it, to be honest.

Have fun!

Power Base Convertors work on CDXs as well, but that thing looks far more space efficient.

Very nice.

Sweat I'd love one of these. I'm out of space for my SMS plus I just dislike that system anyways. I'll deffinitly keep an eye out.

One of those, with an S-Video modded Genesis, and you double the play value for your modded console. Wow.

I like the picture: an australian power strike 2 on a jvc xeye.
Pretty sexy 8-)

I believe they're Australian in origin (made by HES, right?), but they pop up on European eBay site too. Handy enough, but I prefer using the PBC myself ;)

Are they Australian? See, I don't know shite. All I know is it's damn handy when you're short on space.

Happy weekend, everyone.

Oh, and you folks know Tototek makes their version that plays Mark III games too, right (no FM, though)?:

It's the Aussie version of the Datel Pro-MegaMaster converter, the UK version of which I own, take a look at my past posts for pics. The thing's a bitch to work, though - the pause button is on the side of the cart, meaning pausing usually crashes the game due to knocking the cart about a bit. =/

Back in the mid 90's I outfitted a port on my PBC and modified a controller to have the pause button mapped to the unused 'A' button on a spare Genesis controller I had.

Having a pause button on the controller in Master Systems games was the BEST! I wonder why Sega thought people would want to get up for that. Of course, a lot of people thought it was weird that controllers started to have 2 damn buttons, period.

The only reason I beat Rambo for SMS (lol, Ikari Warriors ripoff), was because of that pause button mod I did. Slo-mo was key! And even then, it was a real bitch.

That thing is beautiful. I am defenitely keeping an eye out for this! I love my sms console, but even with composite cables, I get annoyed "noise" in the background. It's very low hum, but still gets to me. If I can get better quality with this small device, than I'm game. Should be fun with a complete us collection ;D.

Would it work on a Genesis Model 3? I can't see any reason why it wouldn't but confirmation would be nice.

Better yet, it looks like it could possibly fit into a Nomad as well. Does anyone know? That would be like getting to play Kenseiden while wearing gold-plated diapers.

Hope this'll work on a CDX!

Looks like it doesn't have a card slot so you couldn't play card games or use the 3d glasses.
I like my PBC on a CDX, sure looks strange though.

No, it won't. The Genesis 3 lacks the Z80 processor that was the CPU in the SMS.
