Ive noticed this just now. Probally around 1993 Sega Decited to make color codes for there game boxes insted of regular artwork. Red was Sega Genesis, Blue Sega CD, Lavender Gamegear, Yellow 32x, White Sega Saturn. I havent seen the Pico boxes but im guessing there light green like the system. Wonder why Sega Did this, the color codes may be different or not even exist in some countrys like the Mega Drive was a dark blue not sure of any others. But yea anyone have any idea why they did this?

Probably so as to give buyers (read: illiterate buyers) a quick 'n easy way to make sure that they're getting something for the right Sega system.

Pico "book cartridges" were in red boxes, as I recall having owning one for my kids, and DP shows here:

I love the fact that they have a consistant design. However I don't love the idea to switch to cardboard.

Ditto.
I was soooo pissed when I picked up my copy of Sonic & Knuckles and found that out. I've always meant to make a custom plastic case for it but just never got around to it.

I remember reading somewhere that the cardboard packaging actually cost MORE than the plastic, and that Sega made the switch under pressure from environmental activists since the cardboard could be recycled, as opposed to the plastic cases which were (presumably) thrown away. Sorry I can't remember where I read that (an old issue of Sega Visions, maybe?). Could be BS.
Now I'm all for environmental awareness, but not when it interferes with game collecting and preservation!

Could be ... The cheaper later releases and re-releases of games where made on hardcover boxes unlike the previous titles on Sega Master System that where nice cardboard boxes.
By the way, do you know about the censored Word on the Power Strike/Aleste introduction ? The good is that SEGA could cut-off a entire megabit of the original game ... Anyway, the SEGA Master System do not have 4-bit bitmaps .
Now the games comes build into the "Third-party" consoles from TecToy.
AHHH! Stop bumping so many old threads!

That reminds me of a copy of Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter for the Genesis that a friend recently acquired. It had its box, but the case insert was a b/w photocopy (it was a former rental).
