Until recently I purchased a game based on one of a few key points:
1. It was rated by Edge magazie, Gamespot or gamerankings
2. I had enjoyed another game in the series
3. It was published by Nintendo
4. Somebody else had a copy that I new
and worst of all --- with older games:
5. I didnt already have one copy
6. I had a copy that was battered
I class myself as a gamer rather than a collector, so effectively i am buying backlog and cannot ever seem to get into it.
Eager to break the pattern I developed a system which I could do with some help on. I am setting about reorganising my collection of 1500+ games into the best 24 (based on purchasing two a month every month) or so every year since 1978.
(it actually works quite well - I had 124 games from 2000 and in trading in around 60 of them have been able to buy 5-10 of the this years games, a new dreamcast (mine had died) and a downpayment on the X360).
Starting with 1992 (for no particular reason), my current hot 24-ish are:

2. Kirby's Dream Land (GB)
3. Mario & Yoshi (GB)
4. Mega Man 3 (GB)
5. Metroid 2 (GB)
6. Super Mario Land 2 (GB)

11. Desert Strike (MD)
12. Ecco (MD)
13. Kid Chameleon (MD)
14. Mega Lo Mania (MD)
15. Puyo Puyo (MD)
16. Road Rash 2 (MD)
17. Rolling Thunder 2 (MD)
