As long as you don't mind investing some time.... And money, perhaps you could try Steel Battalion.

On a related tangent, what's the best Gundam games for the PS2? I'm not really interested in fighters, but IIRC there's supposed to be some pretty neato mech games similar to Gundam Gaiden 0079 for Dreamcast (I don't watch the show, I just picked up the game back when it came out and had a blast with it).

I've been told the best Gundam game out on PS2 is:

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM - FEDERATION VS ZEON

However its widly different to Gundam 0079 that you've played on the dreamcast.

GunGriffon Blaze

A horribly underrated sleeper title for the PS2, but in my opinion, one of the best! It can be found most places for around $5.

Highly recommended.

If you don't mind your mecha games with a bit of strategy, you can always try:

Front Mission 4
Ring of Red

I have to recommend GunGriffon Blaze and Robot Alchaemic Drive as well. GunGriffon Blaze seemed to get burried under the Armored Core 2 release, which is a shame since no matter how cool the Armored Core games are - the controls SUCK, plain and simple. R.A.D. is cool just from how it utilizes the controller as a "remote" for your giant robot, but keeps the player at the perspective of a normal sized person. It's like Gigantor (Iron Man No.28) or Giant Robo.

I wouldn't recommend those unless I knew if he was a rpg guy as well ;) but if you are, then play Front Mission 3 first then 4. Stories are a bit different but I like 3 better.

I wanted to like that R.A.D. demo -- I really did. It was just incredibly frustrating for me instead.
Imagine a fast moving super-monster going up against a robotic toddler and you have my feelings on the game. Coupled with the camera being stuck on the ground because you are stuck on the ground looking up at the battle.
I stepped on myself. -- Twice. :embarrassed: And then the monster stepped on me. After that I just gave it up and was glad I didn't spend any real money on this game. It looked cool too for I like drive the robot around games.

The Armored core series is cool, but I think they _FINALLY_ decided to support analog movement in AC3. Something that bugged me when I played the other episodes. Mind you I loathe the Sony controllers and haven't tried it with my Logitech pad. Mmmmm Logitech.

Did you know they're releasing Armored Core 4 on Xbox 360 and PS2.

I hope the graphics kick ass.

Perhaps YOU could invest some time, and not be a condescending fucking prick. You could also take a little more time, check how many posts I have, and realize I am fairly new. Sorry for miss reading a post, you condescending fucking prick.

You could also take a little time and read this;

Fuck You.

Way to encourage new activity in the forum...... You condescending fucking prick. x_x

Sorry to highjack this a little from the main topic, but getting more specific: which Armored Core game is the best one? I loved the original game on my playstation, and would love to play any of the newer incarnations.

Nexus on the PS2 is supposed to be the best so far..

However we have reason to believe the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be considerably better...lol

I liked Armored Core 3.. didn't like the older versions much because of the controls. There's also Virua-On - Mars, and the Transformers game (which is a sleeper hit, in my opinion). I wasn't a big fan of Gungriffon, but.. meh!

There certainly are better MECH-type games on the X-Box (especially since they own FASA, now).

Me <--- big fan of Mech's right here. :D I want a Battletech movie, dammit!!!

I'll recommend Gungriffon also.

Try Gundam: Journey to Jaburo, I think it's a bit more mission-based than Federation vs. Zeon.

I own it, and while, like all Gundam games, it's a bit clunky, it's a lot of fun. If you watch those old Gundam series, the mechs are *supposed* to move with a bit of clunkiness anyway, it's not Gundam Wing, so I think JtJ provides a very accurate Gundam experience.

ZOE 1 & 2 are just superb, but you know that already. Best mech games I've ever played by a long shot.

I still haven't tried Ring of Red....I need to get on that.

Virtua-On Marz gave me High High hopes for this Sega series on the PS2. It was HORRIBLE. Really slugish controls and very slow playing just left me grumbly and looking for something, anything to really like this game. I could never find it.

Nice to see we have some Anime fans on these forums too.

Gundam is awesome. I own original Mobile Suit Gundam movies on vhs in a nice boxset. It's extremely rare and well looked after.

Anyway i defintly want a gundam game. I may wait for the PS3 though to buy a Gundam game as i heard one is in development.

@insanedavid:
I had no idea the guy I was playing was a power ranger. All I know is I run up to the doctor and his daughter(?) he stuffs a control in my hands and I have to drive this robot.

Ring of Red is _different_. It has an RPG/strategy aspect that is very different. First of all, the initial mechs you drive are clunky. They are slow and it takes a while to do much of anything early on. (I assume the combat gets a bit more intense as you progress, I did the first two missions and started something else.) I will suggest a simple tactic that will help things though. When your cannon finally loads (VERY slow) immediately take aim at your opponent and watch them closely. When they start to make a motion like they are about to shoot. Fire at them. Getting hit knocks your aim off and it applies to your opponents too. I'm sure the computer eventually will take this tactic as well, but I found it helpful when I was playing. Definatley a unique title no matter how you slice it in story and play mechanics.
