Great, more imports I have to hunt down and pay exorbitant prices for.

Excellent column.

Just a slight correction to the article about Punch the Monkey. the title is a play on the name of the manga artist, not the title of the comic/anime. Kazuhiko Kato started drawing Lupin III in 1967, and has always gone by the pen name 'Monkey Punch'

thanks for that correction- the funny thing is, i asked a friend of mine (who's japanese) about this, and that's what he said, but his english is as bad as my japanese (especially after a few drinks), so i ended up with some scribbled down notes and just ran with it.

oddly enough, if you look at the end of the lupins running on cartoon network, they make the same mistake, so i'm glad i'm not the only one, lol...

Greg's latest work went online today, great stuff if you're interested in playing imports on your favorite game system! Check it out, there's always something to learn from this guy.

He mention about learning Japanese
He included a link yesjapan.com
I see that you have to pay for this service. Not wanting to pay for this service, are there any alternative sites that teach Japanese for free?

Greg's always-interesting column features a new edition as of this weekend, check it out - especially if you're interested in how games are "localized" from Japan.

UPDATED TODAY.

Check out Greg's primer on "rally-style" driving games, including lots of interesting imports that you might want to check out if you're a fan of the genre.

UPDATED this weekend.

This one was really interesting to me, import RPG's... did you know there was a ZORK I game on the Saturn? How about on the PlayStation?

Fine reading, as always. I knew Wizardry was big in Japan, but I never knew it was that big.

I'd really like to check out Klaymen Gun Hockey. Is it hard to find?

And there's one minor mistake: the header for the page reads "Did You Know? -Rally Games."

I second Kid's request for more info on Gun Hockey. Where the heck can you find one?

very intresting article. Did the Saturn have a keyboard for playing text-based adventures at one point or another?

Being a big computer RPG fan I really enjoyed this article.

One suggestion I have would be to make the box art pictures on the side of the articles links to larger images of the pictures. I'd love to have a better look at some of the box art.

Very nice article, but I noticed one little mistake.

The Turbo Duo version of Might & Magic III was released in America! As with many later US Duo releases it was limited, but you can see cover art here:

http://www.workingdesigns.com/museum/turbo/software/might_and_magic_iii.htm

Other than that, I really enjoyed it, especially Japanese gamers' unlikely love for Wizardry. They've even got Wizardry on cell phones over there!

Loved the article. Didn't even know about half of those.

Pool of Radiance didn't get a NES port? I could've sworn it had, though I don't own a copy.

Likewise with the Ultima: Runes of Virtue games, though I do have the first one and the SNES version of the second (never seen the Game Boy one).

It did. I remember playing that one with my grandmother when it came out, and at the end there were passwords given for your characters to input in a potential sequel to carry them over. Never did see a sequel.

EDIT: There's one on ebay right now, Item number: 3089428128

... I could have sworn it had too. In fact I could have sworn I saw it at Gamestop and didn't buy it because I don't like NES D&D games. o.O

And they have two copies on ebay. And somehow I doubt Pool of Radiance bootlegs are a hot item.

I was reading some of the back issues and was glad he had posted a screenshot for Shadowrun Mega CD. I had been curious as to what the game looked like but had never seen any screenies... then again I don't think I ever really looked.

It's too bad they never localized it, I love Shadowrun. I used to play second edition with my brother when I was a kid.

:embarrassed: whoops! well, whaddaya know, lol! you DO learn something new every day. i got info on the marty stuff at the absolute last minute, and i got so crazy over all that new info that i forgot to re-proofread the article. correction time! @_@

i actually had "might and magic II (& III???)" while i was researching, but forgot to remove the III once i had confirmed it does exist (which is funny because i had it here staring at me and waving from a stack of unopened duo games that i sold off about a year ago, lol). as for pools of radiance- well, that's a mistake (throws noose over shower curtain rod)- i have all the other nes a d & d games, and was having a tough time tracking down that one. i got my japanese pools from someone who said it wasn't released here, so i just (gasp) figured he was right, lol.

as for klayman gun-hockey? i lucked out about 2 years ago on ebay, and i've never seen another one there since. i think you can submit a request on yamatoku's japanese site and see if they can track it down for you (or maybe someone here who's in or on the way to japan) can grab one for you. it's pretty funny for such a limited game...

alrighty, off to re-write and get these rope burns treated. i'll see if i can dig up some prize-type stuff for the first folks to point out each error :D

as to the pics, some stuff is mine, some was sent to me as attachments with no site info, which is why nothing is linked. for playstation games, you can see scans of almost every game released for the console here: http://allsoft.scei.co.jp

very intresting article. Did the Saturn have a keyboard for playing text-based adventures at one point or another?

yes indeed- it did have a keyboard (and that netlink adaptor that almost no one used, here lol). i was going to do something on netlink japanese stuff, but it's one of those topics that takes a bit of -_- to get through in a column (and i'm still compiling a list, lol)...

d'oh! before i get hit on the head with postings stating this- i think i actually missed a choaniki game for the pc-engine :embarrassed: (well, that's one more to track down one of these days, lol)... ;)

i may do an odball import sports column next time, as i finally got a klonoa beach volley a few days ago (part of an almost year long trade from a friend in japan), and man is this game fun!

anyway, if you don't hear from me over the next couple of days, it's because there's going to be a bunch of workmen here breaking stuff up and causing clouds of plaster and brick dust to settle all over the plastic dropcloths set up and taped around a huge ziggurat of games and systems on the floor and walls in my place (it looks like an oxygen tent for a small elephant, LOL ). i HATE renovations  . even more than moving...

oh well, back to covering up more stuff so that it doesn't get trashed...

Great column as always Greg! If your taking suggestions, I'd love to know about weirder "Japaneasy" games such as Tail of the Sun, Cubivore, Vib Ribbon. (I know two are us releases and you've covered the other one, but that get's you the idea). The abstract, twisted and bizarre...

Yet another very nice column. Kudos! :)

Hell, you covered some games even I didn't know (like Gundam/Galaxian crossover), and that's no easy task. The oddball import sports idea sounds great. There are so many of those... from the various Kunio outings on the Famicom through D3's new T&A-heavy "Love" series!
