View Full Version : Favorite Laser Disc Game

You know what games I'm talking about. Those magical interactive cartoons that came out in the early-mid 80's. Games like Space Ace, Dragon's Lair, and my favorite Cobra Command (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=C&game_id=640)

I think this one had more action in it than Dragon's Lair, or atleast more interactivity. And it sure was harder, at least in my young eyes at the time, I could never get very far in CC. Although I can't attest to the difficulty of Space Ace, I've only played it one time. Nowadays, you can get Dragon's Lair and Space Ace as games that work on your home theater DVD players, but I haven't seen anything of Cobra Command, or M.A.C.H. III since the middle 80's. Whats the deal with that? I've never seen Cobra Command on any home console, but I've seen Dragon's Lair get ported to just about every CD based gaming machine. Dragon's Lair is a great game and a visual treat, but it's not the only laseractive game worth playing.

M.A.C.H. 3 and Bega's Battle were my faves... they were the only games that effectively used the laserdisc for what it did best; scenery and backdrop for raster-graphics game.

Not to mention the replay value; both these games could be played again and again (Bega's Battle moreso than M.A.C.H. 3) without getting repetitive.

Cobra Command is on the SEGA CD. I have it! :-D

MACH III no question...back at Hills in the 80s they had Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and MACH III side by side...I played the other ones once...MACH III though, dad and I played every Saturday for about a year and a half...

I'll go with Space Ace on this one. I STILL really enjoy playing Dragon's Lair (every year at CGE!) but the Space Ace game itself was always more fun and flowed so well. Dyer had corrected some of the "break time" between scenes that occured in Dragon's Lair.

Unfortunately I think that concept went a little too far with Dragon's Lair II, which is just way to fast and chaotic, with literally hundreds of moves per scene, way too many of which are not obvious, even after you die.

So yeah... Space Ace.

I had Dragon's Lair 1/2 and Space Ace on my Amiga. SPACE ACE was the one I enjoyed best (probably due to the sci-fi theme). Unfortunately I was too young to play the real thing in arcades, so maybe I should pick them up for DVD on my PS2.....

Early 80's truly was the golden age for arcades. You could play anything from black and white Space Invaders to vibrant vector Star Wars to "cutting edge 3D" Crystal Castles to laserdisc Dragon's Lair. Awesome!

NOTE: I converted this to a POLL since it's just such a great question! If I left out any good laser disc contenders let me know.

Wasn't Time Gal a Laserdisc based game?

I think I remember playing that and liking it but it was quite a while ago...

Otherwise I would have to go with Space Ace as that is the one I remember most.

Two laser disc games I don't see on here that I played the hell out of:

Astron Belt (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=A&game_id=229) - cheesy space shooter with some of the enemies and backgrounds coming from the laser disc. (And some of the scenes ripped from Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan!)

Firefox (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=F&game_id=1093)- Based on the Clint Eastwood jet fighter movie. Great sit-down game.

Though, for my money, it was a close tie between Cliff Hanger and Space Ace.

Thanks DP, I wanted to make it a poll but I only knew of four LaserDisc Games. Wow, I didn't know there were so many.

Cobra Command is on the SEGA CD. I have it!

That's cool, I'll be sure to look for that if I ever get into SegaCD.

You have, sir :) Road Blaster (aka Road Avenger and not there is no 's' on Blaster which would make it the non-laser disc Atari game) which is by far my favoraite of the genre. In addition to it being a fantastic ardcade Laser Disc game, it came on a dual pack import for the Saturn in the form of Thunder Storm (aka Cobra Command) and Road Blasters and was quite well done.

Hmm it's tough. I think out of all laser games I really just enjoyed 2. And that's Cobra Command and Dragons Lair (no not DL 2). Now if you asked me this question a couple of years ago, I would've shouted out COBRA COMMAND in a heartbeat. We had the sitdown version at a local arcade and I just couldn't get enough of it. It was mind blowing at the time and when the Sega CD version came out, it was heaven (or at least it seemed so at the time).

However, NOW... now that I can play almost all the games via Daphne, that has given Dragons Lair a second chance with me. Although I always liked watching it, I was always gunshy about playing it. It was too expensive, and I knew I wouldn't last long in it. But now that I do have the chance, I've been reliving it all over again.

So in a tough race.. right now I'd have to say... Dragons Lair

I'll get into Space Ace sometime later ;)
