Shmups is short for shoot em ups, all kinda mashed together into a single word. Vertical or horizontal scrolling shooters where you control some kinda aircraft usually. Usually noteworthy for having big boss fights and hundreds of bullets and enemy ships attacking from several different directions simultaneously. Examples: 1942, 1943, MUSHA, Raiden, Radiant Silvergun, Darius, etc. I think you should get the picture now.
