Stupid City Connection question

Any of you played City Connection? (Jaleco - arcade - 1985 http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=C&game_id=623 )

How do you return to a higher-level road than you are on? IE, once you fall or jump down from the top level, how do you return to it?

I actually got halfway-decent at this game one night during high-school, and now can't play worth a flip in MAME tonight.

On the NES version, you can hold the jump button down to jump higher. If you do it at the right time you can sometimes get back up to a higher level. Never played the arcade version, so I don't know if it's the same.

I could swear you just had to hold up on the joystick while you were jumping, but I could be crazy, it's been a while...
