san francisco rush 2049 Game question

I am playing SF: rush 2049 and I am trying to figure out what the gold coins scattered around the tracks are for. Also, can I get a track to go in reverse?

You can unlock items in the game by collecting the coins.

I know that in the Dreamcast version you can race the tracks in reverse. I don't know if you can do that in the arcade version or not.

Hmm. I looked at the guides and nothing about what the coins do. I know they do add some time. Also, I thought that the miles unlock things not the coins.
