View Full Version : I'm thinking about selling all my current gen stuff

No, this isn't another post about somebody gettting "tired of it all" and quiting video games or anything. This is just a pure business play on my part.

I'm going to be getting a XBOX 360 on midnight of November 21st. I'm also going to have two GameFly accounts (3 games at a time) and one Blockbuster Gamer's Pass (2 games at a time). So I'm going to have 8 XbOX 360 game rentals as well.

I can very easily see myself slipping totally into a giant rabbit hole that is the XBOX 360, if you know what I mean. I mean, I think I'll basically get totally lost in the 360 for at least the first 6 months after launch. Then of course, the PS3 would be not too far away, and then the Revolution.

Basically, I will still play my old school stuff, but there is no question that the game time that I normally spent with the XBOX 1 and the PS2 and the GameCube is going to basically dissapear. Any time that I spend with games will either be XBOX 360, or old school stuff like the Turbo Duo.

My PS2, and my XBOXes and my Cube, will basically do nothing but collect dust. So I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to sell everything that I have that's related to the PS2, XBOX and GameCube. Sell it all, of course for the best price I can get for it.

Certainly, I will eventually buy all those systems back at a later date, but it will probably be a number of years from now. Like 3 years or more. So why should I hold onto an item that is steadily depriciating in value, when I can sell them now, and get some decent cash for them. Then later on, a couple of years from now, but them back again, except I'll be buying them for $50 or less each.

Basically, completely forget about current gen for several years, and revisit it, when it actually starts to get a little bit older and crusty. Kinda like if people are playing Dreamcast right now. You can pick up a used Dreamcast for as little as $20 right now. So why not just revisit this current generation at a later date?

Of course, this only works for people like me, who can get totally absorbed by new technology, and can dissapear into a mist of 360, PS3 and Revolution goodness. I know I will still get the retro urge occasionally, so I won't be selling any of my core old school stuff, just current gen.

hmmm. I'm still not sure if I'm going to do this or not, but I've been pondering it. I do have one of my XBOX's for sale, my totally pimped out one, but I still have another XBOX, so I haven't actually started selling all current gen yet, but I'm considering it.

Keep any obscure games as they might be harder to find later, but otherwise why not?

If I buy all your stuff, will you still post these long posts here??

Just wondering.

I can totally understand if some people think this is a horrible idea, because they could never live with themselves if some really cool game came out for the XBOX or the PS2 or the Cube, and they no longer had the system.

If I was a guy like that, then it would be dumb for me to do this. But in my scenario, I think it might be a good idea. I'm going to be totally lost in the next generation starting on Nov 21st at midnight, and I might still play some Super Ghouls N Ghosts on the SNES, but I sure as hell ain't gonna be playing Darkwatch on the XBOX or God of War on the PS2. Plus, with the 360 having backward compatibility to a degree, and the PS3 and Rev having backward compat. it's kinda a no brainer for me.

I agree. Keep the hard to find stuff and sell the rest. You'll always be able to pick up any of the 3 current gen systems dirt cheap. I'd be doing the same thing if I was at all interested in the next generation of consoles.

I will always post long posts. Unfortunatley, it's just in my blood. I can't help it.

As for buying my stuff, I got some nice product. Totally pimped out Xbox that looks like a Spaceship, a modded slimline PS2 and a Cube, even the Nintendo HD cable for the Cube.

I wouldn't do it, but then again, I have never sold a system (except my extra SNES). The only game I've ever sold without getting another copy was Final Fantasy for the PS1 (don't remember which one). Anyways, do what you want. If you want to sell them, I'm sure you'll make some money. Just don't do it if you'll regret it. ;)

While I don't own an xbox (where are the closeouts?) and have no intention of getting a 360 for several years...

If I was caught up in the nextgen hype, I might want to compare the old with the new and see just how much better the new stuff looks, if much at all.

as far a business goes, why not wait 8 years and get a 360 for $50? hell, then you could buy all of your stuff back for a fraction of what it cost new, and all kinds of new stuff for a fraction of what it costs and keep all of your money now!

or spend the time you plan to game on a second job, then make a bunch of money for 8 years, then buy everything that was new this year!?

not my 'business' as they say...

Sell them now while you can get a couple bucks out of them, later on down the road you can pick them up again for 20-30 dollars.

Well it was worth a shot. It would have been worth it, I could have probably got a bunch of people to help me out buying your stuff. Oh well. I've had papers due in college that were shorter than your rants.

May I suggest starting a blog? This topic would work much better as a blog post, since it doesn't involve any discussion whatsoever. It's just a bunch of blabbing about how you'll probably sell your current gen systems.

Make sure you talk like an uneducated hip hop star in your blogs as well, to help reach the masses.

Well, I actually thought that there could be some discussion on this. I was just bring up what I'm thinking about doing, to see if anybody else was considering the same type of thing.

I'm curious to see if anybody else has a policy of selling and repurchasing much later in the future.

Would someone elses policy really sway your opinion one way or the other? Personally, if I think I'll play a game in the future, I don't sell it. If I'll never touch it again and don't thinik it looks cool as a paper weight, I'll sell it. I've had customers in the past that would never sell a game if their life depending on it. As the theme song to the 70's masterpiece Diff'rent Strokes said, "What might be right for you, may not be right for some."

I say go for it, just keep the hard to find games. I would sell my PS2 but it's modded, and thats worth more than a regular ps2. I still have yet to get a Gamecube because the only game I really want for it is Zelda.... Kinda like what I did to the 64, but I usually end up getting a few titles after Zelda. Xbox.. bleh, I never wanted one, and I still really don't want one except to play Ninja Gaiden and Fable. Besides that to heck with it. I can always buy it when it's really cheap.

Go for it. I can never stand parting with my original systems, but you're dead right about this being the time to get the best possible prices. After the next Gens come out you'll be able to pick up PS2's, Xbox's and Gamecubes for next to nothing. Lord knows you'll need the money now to finance those early adopter prices.

Myself? Ever since the Sega CD I've waited until, at least, the second price drop before I even start thinking about current generation stuff. That way you get all those shitty release titles out of the way and actually have a few decent games to choose from.

I'd do it too because if you wait too long you'll be lucky to get 50 cents for the Cube and a wee bit more for the PS2 and Xbox. (Used Xboxes have really started to stack up at our local shops) Then again.....I've never formed a bond with any of the current gen systems, with the exception of the Dreamcast if you consider it current gen, so I'm probably the wrong guy to ask. I've had all three of the current gens at least twice each and dumped them and their respective libraries outright each time with no sense of regret.

The new 360 Elderscrolls game will make the pain disappear really fast anyways. LOL

I'm going to keep one original Xbox, since it should be able to network with the Xbox 360. That way, I can still play some LAN Halo 1/2 if people drop by, without having to spring for a 2nd 360 right away. Otherwise, I don't see what it could hurt to sell off your systems now, assuming you won't want to play them.

Never sold off any my systems, just numerous games. Rgretting it now cause a few of them i want to buy again for one reason or another.
