View Full Version : Nintendo DS paint wears off too easily when you open/close

Is anyone else having trouble with their Nintendo DS? When you open/close the unit, it seems to slightly scratch some of the paint near the speakers and up near the L/R buttons. After having my Nintendo DS for several months and playing it regularly, I now have quite a bit of paint worn off from opening and closing it.
Anyone else having trouble like this? :/

I use mine every day and i've yet to see any wearing at the joints.
I just check the entire unit and i haven't found any scratches.

My DS doesn't even touch in that section. Even the hinges aren't touching each other. Are you sure it's from opening and closing it? I would think any connecting would make it difficult to put it into 'clamshell' mode. I'd like to see a pic of your DS.

Thats not good for playing 'Lost in Blue' then. The game requires you to close the lid while you play (while your cooking in the game).
I've actually never heard of coming off anywhere, let alone in the most protected part of the console.

Well, I have SO worried about that happening to my DS, BUT it hasn't happened yet.
The thing is I haven't played it that much lately, not til some more games come out for it, which the onslaught of GREAT games coming out starts in a couple days with Castlevania!

Here's a picture of it:

I don't have a digital camera so I had to scan it, I also left it as a bitmap so there would be no image quality loss. If you look at it closely you can see the paint scratching where the arrow points toward. It's like this on the other side of it, and right below the L/R buttons. Zooming in in MS Paint at #2 zoom makes it easier to see.
When I close it it isn't a problem, in fact I don't even feel the two surfaces touching each other when I do. It's when I open it up that I notice what it's doing...

How about a product number? Yours may be a different model than ours. Of course, if it really is screwed up, Nintendo has a pretty good customer service program. :)
To be honest, it looks like paint damage caused by the sweat! Yes, I've got a 'few' friends that cause paint on handhelds to flake off from sweating while playing the system.
Not saying that was is happening with yours, but it sure looks like it.
As for my own experience, no flaking at all, and no screen sratches either!

Err...how would it be from sweat? I never touch the top part of the DS...there's not buttons up there by the speakers...
Model No. is NTR-001

Something I learned recently is that the pH of human sweat can vary depending on the person. Going from what ozyr said, the Start, Select, and Power buttons may be pressing your sweat against the damaged areas when the unit is closed. Anyway, it's doesn't seem like a big deal from the pic you showed. It's hardly noticable. :)

recently i niticed this with my cobalt gameboy sp, but then again, Ive been playing it semi-religiously for a couple years or so. The paint is GONE around the upper edges of the system near the hinge and along the sides. :(
Ah well...I always wanted the NES version SP

Actually, it's quite noticeable when you look at it in person. Because I lack a digital camera a low quality scan was the best I could do. That said, it's just bothersome that this $150 piece of equipment looks like it's been abused when I have been treating it very well.

Hmm...I've never seen anything like that. Perhaps the unit you bought just came with a bad coat of paint. Mine's in perfect shape, and I open and close the lid all the time (bus rides, ya know).

I haven't seen that on either mine or my wifes DS. Maybe a certain number of the systems have the problem and they corrected it on others.

The hell?
Mine seems to have the same problem. I thought it was clogged dirt, but it's not coming off!

Thats exactly what I thought at first! X_x
It started out like the system was stained by dirty hands, but it doesnt come off. Then I noticed the paint in these areas was wearing away a smidgen....
Now my GB has a pretty advanced case of paint wear.
Oddly, its not where my hands would be, but near the top/front at the hinge area :/

I HAVE DISCOVERED HOW THIS IS HAPPENING.
Close the lid. Now, press down on it. You'll notice that the top will bend down a little bit. Those of us that keep ours in pockets a lot are most likely to have this problem, I believe.
In other words, it's because the top is flexible that it'll push down and rub against the other half, generally in the near-hinge area.

Crap...I guess now I'm going to have to start putting a cloth or something in between my Nintendo DS everytime I close it.
