Are real gamers second best to Nintendo?

------------------------------------------------------------
Satoru Iwata did an interview with G4TV, and in it he says somethings that are at a Scientology level of craziness. I have watched the interview and transcribed the craziest answer answer of them all.

“If you’re just going to compare the spec sheet, or spec number, to the high number that the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 have, it will not be as high. But the matter is if people are going connect our machine and their machine to the ordinary TV at home, I really don’t think they’ll be able to tell such a large difference between them. Nintendo has been eager to expand it’s gaming population and in order to do so we have to invite people who are not currently playing video games at all. And yes, so in the challenge, if we are simply going to say look, we have better graphics, I really don’t think they’ll be intrigued. That’s so, especially if they’re not interesting video games. So to them, the comparison doesn’t make any difference to them. It doesn’t affect their judgement to buy or not video games at all. Rather, in order to invite them to the world we’re getting, we have to say this is something for you, this is interesting for you. Sort of why don’t you touch it and if you touch it I’m sure you’re going to love it. That kind of message is more important than saying it’s beautiful graphics, simply that. And for most avid gamers players who are eager to purchase the PS3 or Xbox 360 we don’t care… we believe they are waiting to participate as well. They are different machines and after all, Revolution is far from… Revolution can give an experience which is quite different from even the experience of of Xbox 360 or PS3. So I think what we are trying to do is that make Revolution so that it makes sense for them to buy both if they are waiting to purchase PS3 or Xbox 360, and in the end what we really want to do is… Our Revolution machine is to be held and appreciated by so many people who love to play with Xbox 360 or PS3.”

Nintendo is abandoning the gamer. You don’t believe me watch interview. It’s clearly the tone they’re taking. They are specifically going after the non-gamer. That to them that is the untapped market.

He says as plainly as can be that graphics don’t matter because the non-gamer is not interested in better graphics. The controller is design specifically for non-gamers. Nintendo’s best selling games recently (Nintendogs, Excercises For Your Brain, etc) are all non-games. See a pattern here? Iwata even goes as far as to speak of the Revolution and the PS3/360 as two seperate systems targetted at two different people. He acknowledges that “avid gamers” are waiting for the PS3/360, but thinks that they want to play the Revolution as well.

I think he is saying that they are trying to get the casuals as well.

Yeah, I also got the "Revolution will appeal to gamers and non-gamers" vibe from this interview. It was just translated a little weird.

It sounds too me like he is stressing gameplay mechanics as well, over flashy graphics (which is what I've been hearing a lot of people complaining about current-gen games around here). He's saying if you want your realistic "sweaty Shaq technology" go buy a 360, but if you want games that you can enjoy beyond the eye-popping visuals, come buy our machine.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I got out of it.

If it's one thing I have no fear of, it's Nintendo abandoning ture gamers. In my opinon, the inclusion of nearly all retro Nintendo games available for play on the Revolution is sign enough of that. If anything, it's the 360 and PS3 who are abandoning true gamers. I'd rather have a system that can play only brilliant games for around $200 than the one costing three times that because it can play every media device in your home.

I dont think he said gamers are to come 2nd to their market , he was just trying to explain how he came about making the revolution controller and how they are trying to attract casual and non gamers to nintendos revolution. Hell most of us here that are for the revolution are hyped about the controller , from what I heard about how you control games sounds like a really good change.

I don't feel as though they are abandoning me. It just seems that they are trying to market their stuff to non-gamers as well. No-matter what Nintendo does with their Revolution, I'm buying it as a gamer.

If they were forgeting about hardcore gamers why would they come out with a completly new controller design to start off the next gen? I think they got the right idea.

Oh god what childish crap. Its natural for people who don't play nintendo to absolutely fear the return of the psychocreative power that Nintendo wielded in the 8-16 bit era, now you see rediculous threads like Iwata being compared to Tom Cruise. Suffice it to say this has been said before..

Just look at the that crap thread here: Iwata: Revolution will bring a "paradigm shift" Same exact attack on Iwata over semantics.

as long as big titles like metriod, zelda and Resident Evil use the controller in a non gimmic way I am all for nintendo, if they are going to do shit like play mario party or sports crap with the controller ... FUCK nintnedo...

Nintendo has some hardcore serious titles up their sleves, I will get a revolution for them, not for some shit casual crap. As much as the video game industry is expanding, casuals are ruining games for hardcore players...

I salute the casuals with my middle finger.. up urs noobs .. UP URS....

A list has been confirmed? I thought it was still pure speculation.

Um, I'd like to point out that the revolution is something no casual gamer would buy. They want their Halo. We want our interactive conducting simulations (And Halo). As thus, Nintendo is almost automatically appealing to the hardcore sector.

You know, oddly enough guys, I happen to think that it's the so-called "hardcore" gamers that are screwing things up. I know people that have always immediately "traded up" to the newest, latest system since the 80's. THEY are the people that are obsessed with realistic graphics. THEY are the people I know who take a piss on any new or interesting ideas because they're not violent enough. THEY are the people who continue to buy every stinking first-person shooter or sequel to SSX that comes along, and THEY are the people who are perpetuating all the problems we are seeing with modern gaming because THEY are the ones who are voting with their pocketbooks.

Hardcore gamers simply spend the most money on games, and the industry responds being payed by producing more of the same. And they continue to buy it. It's a vicious cycle. If Nintendo REALLY is turning up their nose to that crowd, I'm all for it.

That's funny; he seems to have it backwards. I always had the idea that it's the non-gamers, the ones who may play a bit but don't have any real emotional attachment or love for the medium, who go "OMG U CN C HIS SWEAT!", whereas the real gamers care more for the meat of the game and less for semantics. However you see it, I'm glad Nintendo hasn't fallen into the ranks of following industry fads religiously. It's just sad that pursuing quality and innovation over pandering may doom them in the end.
