I donīt know if this topics also exists, but i never saw a conversation or a discussion about the time monsters, those little bastards that always disturb us when we are playing. I think there isnīt no gamer that hadnīt suffered with this creatures. And now, a top ten of this little fucking monsters...

Number 10 Sue - Pac Land

http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/3180/jt107np.jpg

Not the best, but itīs very difficult to reach...

Number 9 Little Red Demon - Tumble Pop

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/2957/jt98mt.jpg

This bastard follows you across the level unless you kill all the enemies

Number 8 Eagle - Sunsetraiders

http://img398.imageshack.us/img398/2943/jt81vm.jpg

Not sure if itīs an eagle, but this bird follows you in all levels when you donīt move, also with the bosses!!!

Number 7 The hand - The Simpsons

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/7576/jt76rt.jpg

Very funny. With the slogan: "Hurry up", this hand pushes you to walk...

Number 6 Pumpkin - Snow Bros.

http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/4798/jt67fx.jpg

Appears very fast IMO. Very creepy. He spits ghosts to follow you and kill. Is impossible to destroy unless you kill all the stage enemies.

Number 5 Black skulls - Golden Axe

http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/4396/jt56ay.jpg

This dark skulls are very strong and fast. They also appears in level 4 and not from the earth like the white ones.

Number 4 Rotten egg - Wonder Boy

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/7034/jt41ig.jpg

Not exactly a time monster, but this little reaper broke my balls...literally...

Number 3 Evil Otto - Berzerk

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2593/jt35fq.jpg

I hate this fucking little happy face (please Joe donīt hate me) that follows you fastly.

Number 2 Giant face - Rygar

http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/7876/jt16rr.jpg

Not very difficult to reach, but horrible...

NUMBER 1 Baron Von Blubba - Bubble Bobble

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/7675/jt27la.jpg

Like a beluga, but more powerful. White, creepy, with red eyes, this enemy is my favorite...no doubt. But also i hate when he kills me very fast...

Well...i hope you like and enjoy this topic and add more of this "time monsters" to create a good list or just to remember this special characters of a typical arcade game.

Cheers,

Matías

As soon as I saw your title I was thinking Baron Von Blubba should be #1. Cool topic, but I can't think of any you haven't already mentioned. Baby Mario crying in Yoshi's Island was as annoying as hell during his countdown, but I don't know if you would count that for this topic.

Thought up a few more:

Kickle Cubicle for NES - That hugh star that nabs your ass if you run out of time.

Wolverine: Adamantane Rage for Genesis and SNES - A little doll appears out of nowhere and kills you if you take to long trying to beat the level you're in.

I beat Magician Lord for my birthday April 2005. We played it to the end, which means we died A LOT. Upon one of our deaths, we were suprised that if you do not do anything for a while, a time monster comes from the top of the screen and latches ahold of you unitil you die. It really sucks. My vote for one of the worst.

Now, what they SHOULD have is something along these lines that appears and does the same thing to people who "camp" in multiplayer FPS games. That would be great to see some alien-like thing attach itself to a camper's head and suck the HP out of him. LOL

Great list. Bubble bobble is what I thought immediately, along with evil otto.

That'd be beautiful, how bout just attaching to the head so they can't see. It'd make for a more sarcastic punishment. Like when I jumped ONCE in a firefight in Call of Duty and they made me prone the rest of the game. Stupid grounding...

In Adventure Island (NES), a sinister eggplant chases you rather than a reaper.

... No, I'm not talking about the Eggplant Wizard ala Kid Icarus.

All time pain in the ass: the pterodactyl in Joust. Bastard is fast and hard to hit. And why a pterodactyl? Was the hand in the lava pit and the ostrich riding just not weird enough?

Just about everything in Mario Bros. Playing that game can make you afraid of the color blue.

I concur with Calcium Boy up there. The pterodactyl in Joust is the one that gave me the biggest issue.

Great idea for a topic. Baron Von Blubba wins by a landslide, though. I hate that freakly little thing...

A fine topic, truly. Those fireballs in the various incarnations of Mario Bros (not to mention Wrecking Crew) are a real pain indeed.

The only other one that comes to mind right now is Smash TV, but that was nothing special.

Oh, there was also that PC (and presumably Amiga) game known as Elf, where you would leave a tombstone behind in a level if you died, and if you hung around the tombstone too long your ghost would appear and start attacking you. A rather cool-sounding concept, that.

Good ones!, i didnīt remember those. As the game Elf, count too...

I vote for the Pterodactyl in Joust too. That bitch is nearly impossible to keep your lance lined up with him just right so you can kill him. Every time I did it, I couldn't believe it.

And who doesn't always cringe when it comes time for one of the dreaded Pterry waves? They're a guaranteed death, unless you're a Joust expert. I'd rather fight the Lava Troll.

Oh, and there's Venture, too, of course. Rather clever that the creatures from the corridors actually follow you into the room if you take too long. Did the 2600 version implement this as well?

Oh, and the Yeti from Ski Free! (Not really a "time monster", technically.)

Was there a time monster in any of the various incarnations of Pang / Buster Bros ?

Agreed, plus those flying monsters that appear if your not going full speed ahead. Ugh hate those.

Oh my god, why has nobody mentioned Defender/Stargate????

Those god damn Baiters should be at the top of this list.

I actually thought this topic was about time travelling monsters, in which case Lavos goes in there, for sure.

I was reading recently (http://hg101.kontek.net/quartet/quartet.htm) about how a Grim Reaper shows up in Sega's Quartet if you don't keep moving, and thought of this thread.

Oddly, there's no TV Tropes page yet.

Great topic. I remember my friend and I sitting down and playing through Pac-Land on the Turbo-Grafx. Not sure why we did it in hindsight. Gluttons for punishment I suppose.

There's two in the arcade Splatterhouse, although few people even realize that one of them is there.

The first one is the "electrical purple mist" that slowly fills up the stages from the left side of the screen. Just stay still in nearly any stage for a minute or two, and out it comes. The second is this blue orb: http://splatterhouse.kontek.net/mysteriousblueorbzb1.gif The orb seems to be a bit of a mystery, as it's rarely seen. It was mysterious enough that I devoted an entire page (http://splatterhouse.kontek.net/shacbonus.html) on West Mansion to it. Neither of these appear in the PCE/TG16 port, though.

Here's a pic of both the mist and a boatload of orbs attacking all at once:

Does Sinistar count?

I was reading recently (http://hg101.kontek.net/quartet/quartet.htm) about how a Grim Reaper shows up in Sega's Quartet if you don't keep moving, and thought of this thread.I was just about the post that. It's pretty easy to avoid, IIRC, because it's slow and makes only one pass, but it's pretty cool the way that it swings its scythe around and then flies off.
