I recently bought a Vectrex lot and received three controllers. LUCKY ME!

However, in two of the three, the joystick is loose in the NORTH and SOUTH directions, but tight in the WEST and EAST directions.

Anyway to remedy this? They still work, but I like having a tight feel all around, obviously.

There is a return spring integrated into the potentiometers, and when it breaks it causes this. The easiest option would be to sac one of the controllers for it's working pot & swap it into the other. You could also try to fabricate a new spring out of stiff wire; some have suggested using the last bit of wire from a guitar string - the end that's wrapped around that little cylinder thing.

Thanks FABombjoy ^_^

That makes alot of sense. After reading what you said, I tried to open one of the controllers, but I failed. I was just afraid of damaging/breaking it. Is there a specific way to open these Vectrex controllers?

Thanks again!
Alex

There are 5 or 6 screws under the decal. I use a hairdryer to heat the decal up so it peels off. The service manual says to pry it up with a sharp instrument, but heat makes it a lot easier. Try not to pull too hard or it won't look very good when reapplied.

Well, when I said "I use a hairdryer", what I really meant is "I use a heat gun"... a big heat gun - the kind that looks like a turbocharger on a stick... anyway, I've gotten Vec controllers pretty hot and haven't had one melt or distort. I still recommend a hair dryer as it tends to heat a little more evenly. Just keep an eye on it during heating and it should be just fine.
