Whats the best joystick for playing Atari 2600 games?
Ive never played it with anything but dirty used third-party sticks I bought for a doller.
my Gemstick and pointmaster sticks are dying and ill need to replace them soon...but what with?

If you can find one, the 2600 JAMMA Joystick originally manufactured by the GOAT Store just rules. Unfortunately, I was too stupid to even keep one for myself.
I would also suggest the TAC-2 (or "Totally Accurate Controller 2") if you can find one. They seem to be the most sturdily made. Here is what one looks like (not in stock, unfortunately :( ) - http://www.goatstore.com/info.php?id=111325
Personally, I still use an Archer that I got for Christmas one year. It still works rather well, but if I ever wanted to upgrade, the TAC-2 is where it is at!

Epyx 500XJ is a bit on the fragile side (if you drop it, etc)
but it provided awesome control on the C64 and Amiga. And on the SMS too for that matter.
Never had a 2600 until now, but this would be my first choice of joystick for most systems.

The Wico sticks are great. I have two Wico bats, 3 round top and two trackballs. The quality is fantastic.

Call me an uncultured cretin, but I actually use a Sega Master System pad. :P I think that I'm more accustomed to using a D-Pad for movement.
But whenever I'm feeling puristic, I use a Spectravision Quickshot II joystick. Those things are great.

Atari paddles or Atari stick. Wico are cool too. I hate the argentinian joystick clones like the L-com, it really sucks...
Very good topic.

Hehe, you could always make your own.
I like my gemstick. I recently opend its original package and it works so much better then the atari sticks I have.
