View Full Version : Rare PlayStation (PSX) games?

I recently received a bunch of Playstation games, quite a few in the long box, and many titles that I never really heard of. I was just wondering if there were any rarity lists or if any of you folks knew what some rare titles are. Thanks.

Not everyone here subscribes or reads Tips & Tricks... perhaps an online list would be nice.
I've some nice ($50-$100) offers for Puzzle Fighter 2 for the PSX a few months back... I guess that says something.

Yep, sure looks like it's quite sought after, although something tells me with all the copies of it that are online, 'rare' might be streching it.

Pop on over to the rarity lists section of this site. The Playatation section is almost done.

A few that immediately spring to mind:
Dragon Ball Z GT
Suikoden II
Bust-a-Groove 2
The Lightspan Educational games
Yeah, we're working on the rarities now, though - some of them can be found on the list at:

I still don't think Suikoden 2 is RARE! Uncommon sure, but I think the "rare" thing is hype for Suiky 2 being as I've had something like 5 or 6 copies over the last 2 years. The ones I KNOW are rare are games like Intelligent Qube, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, Raiden Project?, and Dragonball GT Final Bout (which I have seen in the wild once!).
Some of the games that aren't TRULY rare but are getting spendy are:
Ogre Battle
Tactics Ogre
Suikoden 2
FF Tactics (original black label before the repress)
Ghost in the Shell (fairly uncommon but not TOO spendy yet)
Castlevania: Symphony of Night (common but getting spendy)
There are a lot of borderline titles that only sometimes sell high too...mostly stuff like FF Anthology and other RPGs. There aren't a TON of truly rare PSX games though, as far as I know.

I still don't think Suikoden 2 is RARE!
I agree - I'm looking more at the "high ticket items" than the truly "rare" ones. It's tough to put rarities on a system library that has 1200 titles and is still being produced!

Just like Chrono Trigger for the SNES.

I totally agree. It's just that a LOT of people don't know the difference between rare and "in demand". And they're not going to learn the difference if we never tell them, so I always try to tell people that game X is worth money but not rare, and game Y is rare, even if it's not worth money. It's strange how some of the rarest games aren't worth much at all, and some of the most common games ever command top prices! :)

I'll try to be more careful next time.
In a post a week or two ago I mentioned that searches on Suikoden II on eBay typically yield a full page of results.

Games I would consider ER:
All Lightspan titles, of course
Adidas Power Soccer 98
Adventures of Lomax
Baseball 2000 (Interplay Sports)
Bogey Dead 6
Braindead 13
Brunswick Bowling 2
Dragonball GT Final Bout
Dragonheart: Fire & Steel
F1 Racing Championship
Fox Hunt
Goal Storm '97
Herc's Adventures
In the Hunt
ISS Pro Evolution
Lemmings 3d
Lethal Enforcers 1 + 2
Micro Machines V3
Power Rangers Zeo Power Pinball
Power Serve Tennis
Psychic Detective
Psychic Force
Punky Skunk
Roadsters
Robo Pit
Samurai Shodown Warrior's Rage
Shanghai: True Valor
Silverload
Spot Goes to Hollywood
Starfighter
Starblade Alpha
Striker Pro 2000
Syndicate Wars
Team Buddies
Tecmo World Golf
The Crow: City of Angels
True Pinball
Viewpoint
V-Tennis
Viva Soccer
Zoop
All these are quite often unavailable on ebay - quite a few sell less than once a month. They're also all titles that I haven't seen more than once in the wild.
As for *expensive* games, it's a totally different matter. The games that sell for a lot ($50 or more pretty much every time) are:
Brunswick Bowling 2
Bust a Move 2
DDR Disney
Dragonball GT Final Bout
Intelligent Qube
Lunar: SSS (if complete with all the extras)
Lunar 2: EB (as above)
Street Fighter Collection 2
Suikoden II
Super Puzzle Fighter 2
Tactics Ogre
I suspect the PSX will have quite a collector's value in the future, though, and it's worth picking up games now while they're dirt cheap. This list doesn't include games released within the last six months or so, since it's too hard to tell their future rarities.

Is D playstation longbox rare? I thought it was so I said so in the auction listing. I started to play it, it's scary!
Lexicon also picked up Lemmings 3d last week. I hassled him about it because I didn't know it was really rare, oops.

D's not common, and it's worth a bit, but I wouldn't consider it one of the really rare titles. You see it around on a decent basis.

@kevincure: I hope you mean Bust-a-GROOVE 2, I've seen Bust-a-Move 2 many many times and will commence kicking myself if that's really a game people are paying a lot for.
kevincure
01-28-2003, 02:49 PM
DP.. yeah, Bust-a-Groove 2 is what I meant, sorry for that confusion :-). Bust-a-Move 2 is pretty common, though the 3 PSX Bust-a-Moves are worth 15-20 each, so worth picking up if you see them cheap. I believe Bust-a-Move 99 is the hardest to find of the three, though still not too hard to pick up.

The original Guilty Gear isn't easy to find, and its infrequent eBay appearances are starting to reaching beyond thirty bucks each time. Atlus titles tend to have low production numbers, and this one has a particularly good reputation. Buy it if you see it.
While we're on the subject of Atlus games, some industry bigwig (it may have been the president of Working Designs) once remarked that Eggs of Steel had the lowest print run of any PlayStation release that he knew of.

In Cold Blood: Not rare (http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&query=in+cold+blood+&from=R10&ht=1&currdisp=2&st=2&category2=3718&Top10=&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&catref=C1). Though it is relatively new, I believe, so you never know.
The City of Lost Children, Guilty Gear and Eggs of Steel all are somewhat rare, though you can pretty much always buy them on ebay. All worth picking up, though.

Kevincure....since when is Bust a Move 2 for PSX rare and worth $50+? I looked and the ones I saw were at like $15 on eGay....same with Street Fighter 2 Collection 2, both of which i can currently get easily and cheaply if they were really worth money....

01-28-2003, 11:33 PM
maxlords...As I said to DP above, the Bust - a - Move was typo. Bust-a-Groove 2 was what I meant to say.
As for Street Fighter Collection 2, though, it's definitely worth bills (http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&query=street+collection+2&from=R6&siteid=0&ht=1&st=2&category1=1249&Top10=&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&catref=C1)

I'm not sure on these, a few titles have struck me as possibly rare...I most likely am wrong...just my observations...
Power Shovel
Anna Kournikova Tennis
some of the earlier Agetec / A1 Games etc. budget titles are now going for $25 used around here...(Ford Racing, Board Game Top Shop, Dodge Ball come to mind...)
Animaniac's Ten Pin Alley
Return Fire
eh...I have a lot more I want to mention, but I can't remember them right now...

If anyone here wants a copy of Symphony of the Night, I can get them for $13 at my local Costco, sealed! It's the Greatest Hits version though.

Is Project Horned Owl rare or is it just that it sucks and no one wants it?
I've been half way looking for a copy b/c I love Elemental Gearbolt (same dev team) and I never see it in the wild. I've heard it's pretty dissapointing tho.
Also, how 'bout Philosoma? I've only ever found a loose copy once. Had to buy it, only loose PSX game in the collection, grrrrr...

I'd guess that pretty much all of the longbox Playstation games are rare? A local EB just got about 5 in for about $5 each...I'm gonna pick them up today!

What about Bomberman Fanatasy Race and Jumping Flash 2?
I never see those.

Nah..Horned Owl just sucks. Elemental Gearbolt is a bitch to find, but I've passed up a hundred copies of Horned Owl.
As for Philosoma, it's REALLY good, but I don't know how rare it is. A friend of mine just gave me a mint complete boxed Philosoma the other day and I know he got it cheap...that game TOTALLY kicks ass! I can't believe more people don't rave about it!
And I just got a Jumping Flash 2 the other day for $6 mint complete, but you don't see it a LOT. I think a longbox mint complete Jumping Flash 1 would be rarer (anyone got one to trade to me?).

Flip your stats for EG and Horned Owl, and that's how it was out here. I havent' seen a copy of EG in a while, but I used to see it quite often (excellent game, btw.)
Philosoma is EASILY one of the best shmups on the PSX. (At least out of what we got here in the US.) Up there with Einhander and R-Type Delta, IMHO.
Re-read earlier posts, I forgot about Power Shovel! That game looked cool as hell and I never could find a copy. Same with RC deGo.

I had no clue that Ghost in the Shell was harder to find, I just saw that game last week in a shop for $14.99, i didn't check the condition of the disks though, maybe I should go do that.

Heck, I have also passed up Elemental Gearbolt, twice as a matter of a fact, but the price was more than I had at the time (25$) so I thought nothing of it.

RC De Go: I have it listed as R - $4 on my list - it's pretty rare, but not really worth much right now.

I never thought RC de GO was that rare.
Uncommon maybee but I can think of many which are alot rarer.
When it comes to the newer games I think Disney DDR mix is pretty tough.

@Magnor-- While the other titles you listed are pretty tough to find esp sealed I don't think you'll find this title ANYWHERE. Except maybee in your head.

I have a question on PSX rarity since I know nothing about them. I picked up 2 games this weekend and I'm just wondering if I got a good deal. I picked up RPG Maker for $19 and a new sealed Disney Jungle Book dancing game for $12 (all Canadian dollars).
Anything rare here? RPG Maker came with 1 disc and 2 manuals. Is it complete?
Also, the store had 5 new copies of that Jungle Book game so I was thinking it might not be as rare as I thought it was.
Any help would be appreciated.

Neither of them are very rare, though both are fun. Jungle Book is a DDR style game that's actually pretty fun.

I would like to try to dispel the undeserved Philosoma praise that's floating around here. To that end, I've prepared a few key phrases:
1. Philosoma sucks.
2. Philosoma is not more than mediocre as a shooter.
3. It is a sin to mention Philosoma in the same breath as R-Type Delta, unless the words "sucks compared to" are between them.
Repeat those three mantras repeatedly until they sink in, and walla! You are cured.
:P
