There is already a conversation going on about it here:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=71582

Personally, I think it probably belongs in this forum too, as it definitely isn't eBay material. Fascinating stuff though. I'll be contacting them soon. If I can get the rights for something kooky like NFL Quarterback Club 2000 for really, really cheap, I might do it just because it would be kinda funny to own ;)

Or maybe I'll get the rights to a couple properties I actually care about...

What good is it to own a right to a game that was on the marked 15 years ago?

Have you all been living in a cave? Acclaim went bust months ago.

I call Mr. Domino!

Most of those are licensed titles, so the rights probably go back to the original company (NFL, NBA, WWF, Mary Kate/Ashley, etc.). You could probably buy the code from them, but if you were to release anything, you would have to change the games or else pay new licensing fees.

That being said, it would be cool to own the Bruce Lee game, even if it wasn't that good.

I've emailed them because I'm trying to figure just that out. If it is worth anything, or if you're just left with the rights to manufacture it if you can get the other rights.

I am serious about wanting to buy some of these...

See, the problem though is that Smash TV is actually owned by Midway... So do you own the rights to make the game again for the SNES? And if so, do you have the rights to sell the rights to emulate the SNES game? Could I guy Mortal Kombat, Smash TV and so on and make a SNES compilation disc for the Xbox? Or are these literally worthless?

I hope they reply to me about it.

Okay, I got a reply about them. Unfortunately, their prices are extremely out of line, especially for games that from every indication you can do absolutely nothing with. By comparison, I'm chatting with a couple companies about getting rights for certain properties of theirs that are viable, and they are asking prices much lower than where the "bidding starts."

I'm actually really disappointed :(

but what exactly are these people trying to buy? Someone bid $25K for Mr. Domino. Isn't this just a Japanese game that Acclaim localized for the US PSOne? What good would owning this license do anyone? Did anyone talk to the auction company about what exactly they are selling?

$5k is the minimum, and as you can see, it encouraged few bids. I asked the guy handling this the same question 2 weeks ago, and he said 'I forwarded your questions to the trustee'.

I'm going to check the paperwork at the end of the week. I'll report back when I do.

Dude. It's PUBLISHING rights. That's it. The games are still owned by Midway/Taito, there's nothing "to do with the franchise" except to re-publish the Acclaim versions. One possible example of what a buyer could do is: buy the publishing rights to the SNES version of MKII, then publish it for the GBA. Woo?

Remember when Majesco re-published a bunch of Sega Genesis games? It's like that.
