If I remember correctly, you only need one controller to play SMW with 2 people. It's been a really long time, but I remember reading somewhere that the SNES senses how many controllers you have plugged in and adapts.
(I could be totally wrong though :embarrassed: )

When I got my PC Engine recently, I was shocked and awed that the controller cable was a whole three feet long. That's less than a meter for you metric folks.
I guess NEC wanted you close to the TV so as to appreciate the details...

The easy explanation is, much like it has already been pointed out, that the average Japanese living room is tiny in comparison to Western rooms. One valid point why the Xbox bombed in Japan was the enormous size of it and the controllers.

It must be an old Japanese proverb or something.
To think that I get annoyed that the PS2 cable is just a tad too short. ;) The very long controller cords of the Xbox were awesome.
I guess this problem goes away for good with the next gen consoles.

The Japanese traditionally sit way too close to their TVs. They are always finding ways to cram more crap into less space.

Well, Sony is too lazy to manufacture different sized things for different regions, so at least their controllers have the same length as the US ones.
In fact, they're completely identical as far as I can tell, so I no longer know if my controller is actually the one that came with my Japanese PS2 or if it got mixed up with my brother-in-law's US PS2 controller. :/

Houses in Japan are smaller so no matter were the TV in the room is, any person in the same room can be no father than an arms-length away.
Ok I have no idea

" You americans have such big cords. Our cords or so tiny"
Xbox controller cord, dam is that thing long. Why would the sell extension for it?

I've noticed the short controller too, but i also have a SFC controller with a 6-7 ft cord. My friends thought it was funny that i practically had to sit with the SFC in my lap until i opened my second controller. You may be able to find one of the longer cords on ebay somewhere.

It's so they can sit closer to the tv, because ever since 1945 they've had this insatiable appetite for radiation.

Jesus Christ, that was bold!
I just wanted to point out that the Turbo Grafx controllers are just as short as the PC Engine ones which may be another reason it DIDN'T succeed in the States.
