Do you have gaming superstitions or "habits"?

I have a few and a friend that I played some football video games with did too.

My friend and I would play co-op. If we were trailing after the third quarter he would not talk. It was a sort of superstition for him. You might think that's annoying, it was actually really funny. It did'nt happen too often but when it did, it was always entertaining.

Me, I played a lot of Baseball titles. After a homerun I had to get a drink, snack or stretch. Basically take a little lap around the bases I guess.

My friend also can't play titles like resident evil unless it is dark in the room o' doom.

Another thing we were both in the habit of doing was after a victory in the super bowl, he always put his controller on his stereo speaker and I always put mine near my drink.

i had tons when i was like ten. like if i was fighting a boss, i would have my friend hide. Have no f'ing clue how that would help, but i kill the boss. strangly only one i can remember, but i know i ususally had tons of things like that, mostly it was in the moment.

When I play Missile Command on the Atari 2600 I used to have this odd little pre-wave compulsion. When the "doo-doo-doo-doo" music played prior to the start of the missiles coming down I would make the missile guide shimmy back and forth in time to the tune around this line of RF interference that always appeared at about 1/3 from the left edge of the screen. Now that my 2600 is A/V modded that RF line is gone. So sometimes I still do the shimmy but it feels like an empty ritual and not something that will ever truly help my game.

I don't speak while playing online if I'm very serious about winning.

When I was a kid, I booked a lot of time on Mario platformers - the one thing I can always remember is moving the controller through the air every time I jumped, as if moving the controller was going to make me jump farther.

Haha, how far I've come - if I ever get my hands on a Revolution controller, perhaps that old habit would actually be of some use. :)

I listen to music while playing MVP 2005 and if I start doing badly I change the song and I find I somehow do better by playing a different song.

Haha. Damn that sounds stupid.

Well before playing Ghosts 'N Goblins I always make sure to:
- draw a pentagram on the floor in sheeps blood
- light some candles
- lay out the virgin
- recite some stantic verses
- and the cut out her heart as an offering to the dark lord satan.

Ok so i don't really do that, but i bet you anything it would help me get past level 3. :devilish:

Aside from that i have a habbit of treating war games very seriously. I often get into character and if i'm on voice people really notice. Krauts are krauts, not nazi's for instance.

I also refuse to play any survival horror game in a well lit room. The sole expection to this rule is D2 which is meant to be played in the light. I love enviromentally impressive games and i always try to set the mood. Fatal Frame on a dark stormy night when you're alone is a great experience.

lay out the virgin
While they tend to qualify as empty calories, the male ones found at any-CON are easier to catch and detect.

Back on topic, I wash my hands after I play. I also notice that I tend to chew my lower lip a bit if things are pretty intense.

Hex.
[ and there you have it... too bad we don't have any turpentine handy...]

If I'm playing a head to head game I never have anything to eat or drink around.

No pets allowed during game time. Wires, pets, wood floors. Not a good combination. Not really a superstition but it is a habit.

Also, no conversation from a non player, unless necessary.

Me and a friend used to do that when we were trying to beat Super Mario 3 back in the day! Whenever one of us got to an airship boss, the other one would run and hide in the bathroom and plug his ears until the guy playing came and told him the good or bad news. Sounds funny now, but we were 12 at the time and we didn't know about the warp whistles, and we obviously must have inherently sucked at gaming because I don't think we ever got past the Ice World.

Always get bored at everything else when a new game arrives. Then give up on that as quickly as the next arrives.
