View Full Version : Valkyrie Profile guide w/ huge misprint - higher or lower $?

Borrowed this from a thread on CheapAssGamer. A guy says that he has 2 copies of a Valkyrie Profile guide, but instead of pages 96-128 it has some high school textbook pages. He also provided pics, and they look pretty legit. Here's one for example:

1 side of the argument is that since its a major error, the guide is damaged and isn't worth as much as a normal guide. But my logic would be that people aren't buying the guide for help with the game, they are more interested in the scarcity, and a major variant like this would be quite desirable.

Discuss.

P.S. - Sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum

Most likley the company charged with printing the guide for Brady/Prima also had that text book and accidently bundled the wrong section together. An oddity yes, but I dont know how much more desirable this really would be other than to a super completist strategy guide collector. If I was a normal person wanting this guide then i'd be pretty pissed that a deep portion of the guide is actually missing and woulda returned the thing back to the store I got it from.

That's the thing about misprints and errors, they are just that...defective products. While you can usually sell it for slightly more than the cost of the original, it's usually just people buying it for the oddity factor of it and not so much the rarity.

For some reason, people still seem to think errors like this warrant big bucks on the resale market. I get a good laugh anytime I see someone trying to sell a sealed Star Wars action figure on the wrong card for 100.00 at a flea market.

I beg to differ. I think people ARE getting the guide because they want help with the game or at least want it because it's related to the game. I think most wouldn't be interested in it if it's missing a good chunk of the pages that are supposed to be there.

I'd also argue the claim that it's rare. I didn't have much trouble finding it in stores back when the game was new (heck, I think I had a harder time finding the game itself), and for years, it would barely break $10 on eBay, if that (and it was very frequently listed I should point out, with several copies available at pretty much all times). But with the value of the game going up and up, it's having a similar effect on the guide.

I wouldn't say it's worth more. I mean, it's like something you'd buy at a tourist trap. You don't buy it because you really think that's a pickled fetus there in the jar, you buy it because it'll give you and your guests something to talk about next time you're hammered.

I remember about 10 years ago when I would frequent comic shops and they'd have figures that were upside down on the card or had wrong/foreign cards instead of the regular ones, but they never really went wild with the pricing of these, maybe $5 more than regular. It's all up to who's buying, as with anything, that's what will determine the value, not a bunch of people saying whether it is or isn't.

Yeah, I'd say only really, really rabid collectors would value it at anything more than the price of a normal one. I think most strategy guides are valued because they are able to help someone better complete a game.

Well but that's how it works with coins and stamps for example!
