Just about each edition of Zelda has a gold cart or special disc for it, but why didn't Nintendo make one for the SNES version which became a players choice games real quick?

Maybe because the label of the game was already gold? Or perhaps spray paint for those cartridges was more expensive than for the NES games. :D

In Europe also the N64 OOT was grey (Australia got a gold one), also GB titles are just grey carts. Don't know why and I can't care about it.

Well, Zero, sharp doesn't care, so that's the end of it.
Seriously, they probably just said, "fuck it" and didn't make one...though they could have done it, threw a promotion for the OMGR4R3!!1! version, and made even better sales.
I think every game should have a rare gold version. ;)

Well, it's not a gold cart, but I have seen label variations for Zelda: LTTP. One is the solid gold, like in the above picture, and the other is a brown/orange rock design. I think it depends on if the game in question is a Million Seller or not, but I don't know exactly for sure.

The Million Seller version has the brown/orange (and cooler looking, imo) version.

I always wondered that myself .. especially since the N64 got a gold cartridge as well. I would have been all over a golden LttP cartridge.

In a perfect world, every Zelda game would be gold. It should be a law. I remember being bitterly disapointed with the grey SNES cart and its one of the reasons I never bought the game new. Now that I think about it, unless the game is "limited edition" or has cool preorder goodies, I wait and buy it used.

I would be all over a gold cart for Lttp as well. It's my favorite Zelda game to date. I'm sure they knew the game would sell well since it was the "Oot" of the 16 bit erra.

As long as Twilight Princess is printed on a gold disc, I'll be happy.

Why are Zelda games on gold cartridges anyway? Whats the story behind it?

It is supposed to be golden like the Triforce. Also, I'm sure Nintendo did that to give the game an edgier, more adventurous look (gold=adventure=treasure...just ask Indiana).

I'd guess because 1) it'd be eye catching, 2) because the goal of many fantasy games is to collect treasure, so making the cartridge gold would make it appear to be "treasure", thus getting the gamer in the fantasy mood and 3) (which could bind the above points together) because the original LoZ was pretty much the start of a new genre, so they made it "special". The concept was so popular they continued the trend...except for LttP and the Game Boy games.
I wonder if it's because the type of plastic they used for the SNES carts. As I've seen, if you don't take care of Zelda and Zelda II the paint easily peels off. SNES carts have a kind of texture to them so maybe the shiny gold paint wouldn't adhere well, thus making the paint flake even easier. They could have gone with the same color approach as RoboCop vs. Terminator or Killer Instinct (black and red carts respectively). However, the more I think of it, those carts had the same texture and maybe a gold color added to the plastic would make the cart appear an ugly yellow.

Yeah im a sucker for weird packaging.
Love the Red Spiderman game on snes.
OR black killer instinct.
I think it even worked on pc... Back before they standardized software packaging because wal mart threw a bitch fit they would have gimmick boxes to get sales. I remember Tomb Raider 1 because it was shaped like a tomb stone "I think" And Nam or "Napalm" was shaped like an ammo box.
Its a bummer they have standardized software sizes now because you wont see huge maps and gimicky "tchotchke or whatever" given away with games much ....wait what was this thread about?
Oh plus Robo cop vs terminator had coolest box ever for snes game imo

Doh! That's right....One of the Spidey games was a red cart (Maximum Carnage?). For some reason KI and "red" came together in my brain.
I remember Tomb Raider 1 because it was shaped like a tomb stone "I think"
The RPG "Stonekeep" by Interplay was in the shape of a tombstone. I don't recall Tomb Raider having an oddly shaped box.

I'm pretty sure Tomb Raider 1 had a trapazoid shaped box. A tall trapazoid. I suppose its kind of a tombstone shape.

I stopped asking why Nintendo does not do things.
Primarily because they have their own formulaic thinking.
I would have swore the ereader would have had more tie ins to other Nintendo games. I would have swore the N64 would have gone just a little bit different, still playing goldeneye though. I also would have AN ANIMAL CROSSING CUBE SEQUEL WOULD BE HERE BY NOW. Yes, I stopped asking why some time back.

Good question...really good...but i don´t have the answer...
Maybe Nintendo could make two versions of the cart for the SNES, like the NES: one gold and one grey...but...they didn´t do...so...

Zelda: Links Awakening DX for GBC is black! Black I tell you... oh woe, this injustice! Nintendo must be guided by the Devil's hand... (Vader yells) "Do not want!" LOL

That's true eh? It would have been pretty slick looking if it were on a gold cart. Hmm... maybe I can paint one of the ones I have...

I can’t remember where I read this but the original Zelda card was gold because Miyamoto ad made a special request to Nintendo to do it based on the fact that it was the first NES came like that. At the time of Zelda’s release there was not much in its class in terms of overall size and game length. So, again, the gold cart was all Miyamoto. Man that guy is smart sometimes….note I said sometimes.
As for the SNES cart not being gold…I don’t know why. I will say I don’t like the look of the finish on the N64 carts. The total bling of the original NES Zelda 1&2 was much better than the muted finish on the N64 cart. A perfect crisp copy of Zelda for the NES is a sight to behold!

:D Yeah, dude! Hmmmm....maybe someone could make a casing out of it and auction it. That would be crazy!!
As for the N64 gold carts, they look like they were colored with a shitty gold crayon...nothing shiny about them.

There really is no excuse for not doing gold Gameboy Zeldas. Donkey Kong Country got a special color. Every Pokemon game gets a color. Why did they drop with ball with Zelda?

The gold color to the origninal Zelda and Zelda II are not paint. I think it is called "electroplating". It is a powder coating that is applied to the plastic with the use of magnets or some such thing. It was very popular in kids toys in the 80's.
I remember all the original G1 Transformers had silver plated weapons, and if you played with them alot the silver would rub off and you could see what color plastic was under it.
I think that there is a guy that I met on a Transformers fourm that would offer to re-plate your transformer parts for you. So maybe with a lot of research you could find a company that would do electroplating in gold, and send them your SNES Zelda cart. You would probably have to take your game appart and take the lables off of it, but if you went through all the trouble you would have a one of a kind collectable.
But then I suppose everyone would start doing it, and then claim it was a rare Nintendo issued item and charge hundreds for it. Maybe some things are best left alone. :)

Pimp my Cart yo! You could chrome all your games and silver or gold plate your most beloved titles. I bet G4 is working on this show right now to add to the shitty ass "Whip Set" time block. Though I think it would vastly improve the quality of the programing in that block. LOL
Oh - and don't forget Dub CD/GD/DVD's... They spin even when their not spinning... he hee

maybe they thought "why waste the extra money if its gonna sell anyways?" Or hell, maybe the thought didn't even cross their minds. They could be sitting here thinking " Yeah man, why the hell didn't we do that?"
And Acidic_Pain...
The whip set does suck much ass.
