View Full Version : Tempermental PS2 Controller

I was playing Fear Effect tonight (finally sitting down and playing all these PS1 games I got cheap last spring) and everything was working fine. Then all of a sudden any direction pressed would cause my character to roll - in other words it was like the L2 button was being mashed down. When I was finally able to get this to stop the R1 button began to cause the player character to roll.

I put in Capcom vs. SNK 2 (PS2) and everything seemed fine, all the buttons worked fine in the menu screens and I started a game. It seemed the shoulder button problem went away except now X and O wouldn't function, same thing with both L2 and R2 as well as Start. Additionall pressing the analog button would pause the game. Took that out, tried Gran Turismo 3, same thing - fine in the menu screens but once on the track the face buttons would be jumbled around and no matter what gear the car would start in it would be stuck in it - both in automatic and manual. Even when in a rolling start in Free Run mode with an auto transmission, the car would never get out of third gear, even at a dead stop it wouldn't downshift.

I check out the controller, all the pads are good, I've checked the cord and I'm getting continuity through each wire. I would dismiss this as "oh well, the chip is bad" but the controller works fine in the menu screens for pretty much everything but would crap out when gameplay would begin.

Even stranger if I say, boot GT3 without a memory card installed it won't let me select OK when prompted with the "there is no memory card inserted" screen. If I plug in a different controller and select OK, then put the problem controller back in things work as described above. It's all good in the menus, falls apart on the track.

This controller has had HEAVY usage since it was purchased the day it was released (is the clear smoked DualShock2) so it being worn out is no surprise. But all the pads are in good condition and with the randomness I just can't figure out what the hell is wrong with it. Think the pressure sensitivity crap is causing logic falures? I mean when the problem first acted up with Fear Effect, gently squeezing R1 caused the player character to run (which it's supposed to do) but pulling it down all the way caused the character to roll - which is what R2 is supposed to do. Remember, Fear Effect is a PS1 game, the buttons should perform ONE fuction. Sounds to me like a short somewhere on the chip was beginning, any advice?

I don't care that it's broken, like I said, it's an old heavily used controller. I just want to figure out what the hell is going on for my own piece of mind.
