View Full Version : Longest game from start to finish

What game took the longest amount of time to finish? Now, let's not count RPG's, unless they are simple and DON'T include a save or password feature. My choice would have to be either Ikari Warriors for the NES, or Rampage. What do you guys think? What other games took an insane amount of time to beat?

Edit: This only includes games that were made to be beaten in one setting (without shutting saving the game, shutting it off, and returning at your save point at a later date). This also (duh!) doesn't include games that don't end.

Ghouls'n'Ghosts takes a relatively long time to beat, considering you have to play through the game twice to get the proper ending :/

OK, let me amend the topic a bit. Let's not count games where you must repeat the exact same levels. Taking that away, G&G is still pretty long, but I don't think nearly as long as the two I mentioned.

maybe you should put an approximate time you spent playing the game. might give a better frame of reference.

I haven't finished too many games w/ no passwords or saves.

Wonder Boy in monster land is pretty lengthy, but probably about an hour and a half.

Resident Evil Survivor was over 2hrs. Possibly 2 1/2.

Not counting racers either, since they never really "end".

I'm going to simply raise my hand and say "Ocarina Of Time". To get all of the skulltulas and black ghosts and whatnot took a VERY long time. I haven't finished it....but I'll bet that Donkey Kong 64 will take forever as well. All of those N64 Rare games had huge gameplay times.

Megaman 3 took me a long time to beat in one sitting.

Bionic Commando was also a long game as I remember.

What about 1942, that is one long shooter.

Tiger Heli for NES. That game never ends afaik.

I think that conquering every single level in Super Mario 3 would probably run a player close to 3 hours. I think my first time all the way through Bomberman II took about 4 1/2 hours but I continued something like 30 times. It certainly wouldn't take that long another time around. A straight through season of Tecmo Super Bowl with just one team would take a good chunk of a day too (but I bet that doesn't count either) ... if it did Tecmo NBA would have to be the longest game.

I suppose it would depend. I like the topic but there are a lot of variables. Mainly what constitutes length? Is it the time start to end that a resonable person person playing at a resonable speed to the end of the game. Or is it the 100% completion? IE I beat SSX 3 with one character got most of the items, beat most of the challanges and unlocked a lot of stuff. I call that beat. Or is beating SSX 3 with every character collecting everything and unlocking everything beating? That would alter the length considerably.

OOT certainly doesn't count, because it wasn't made to be beaten on one setting, which is why it has the save feature.

Far Cry Instincts is one long ass game. Took me about a combined 11+ hours to beat. But the longest game I ever played?, well i gotta think about it.

Sneaky! LOL You added the "in one sitting" edit after I posted. My new vote is for most of the NES games, 'cos I really suck at them. I have yet to successfully do a run through the original Mario game.

Only game I can think of is Marioland, but I can complete that in one sitting in about 35 minutes. It takes determination to play it all the way through a second time though!

Not really counted, but certain games are completable in one sitting without saving. Games like Resident Evil, MGS, and Parasite Eve II for example... It takes a lot of guts to play the game through without saving once ~ If you mess up, that's a waste of a good few hours work!

If iI could mention RPGs, then "Final Fantasy 7".

Otherwise, "Jet Force Gemini" and "Donkey Kong 64" take the gold.

Kabuki the Quantum fighter, and Duck Hunt

Duck Hunt doesn't end...the score just flips.

I beat Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom in about 15 or 16 hours in one sitting....though I probably wasn't supposed to. That was about 12 years ago, and by far my longest gaming session by probably 3x.

If anyone is playing this game for the first time I must say, save when ever you get the chance. I remember I was play FF7 from the begining and when I moved to the second disc I didn't save and then went on to fight red ruby then we got hit with a blackout. I was so mad. Stupidity though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kid Chameleon yet. That game has no save features, and from start to end without using any of the secret warping tricks, the game can last several hours.

Too many stipulations to this question. Just let people answer man. Afterall a lot of games I would leave on over night to beat the next day, so how would I classify those?

Ugh, is it so hard to actually read the criteria? It clearly says what doesnt count and most of the post are exactly what they shouldn't be. Come on people, you're smarter than this. I certainly agree with Kid Chameleon as the best Legit answer.

I agree...

My friends and I did it at a birthday/slumber party. That easily took us a whole day from the start in the evening until we finished it that next afternoon.

The criteria seems to constantly change though. First no RPG's, then no repetitive levels, then no racing games, then no non-ending games etc;

Maybe it should be "What is the longest game as long as it's Ikari Warriors" (no offense to the author, I just randomly picked one I remember hearing).

Sorry about that. :) I originally thought you guys would have known not to count games meant to be played over time (save games). I apologize.

A mere 35 minutes? Play Rampage for 35 minutes, and you'll likely be up to round 15-20, and have about 100 more to go. :)

Depends. Name the game. Ifyou have a total of two hours playing time, but pause it overnight, it still counts as a two hour game. I used to do that with Rygar.

Rygar did take a long time, but longer than Ikari Warriors and Rampage? Maybe those games just seemed long, because they got boring and repetitive after a while, while Rygar was a blast from start to finish.

No offense taken man. :) Lemme point out a couple of things though. I don't think I said no racing games, but I personally wouldn't pick one. As for no non-ending games, I shouldn't have even had to mention this, as only a total moron would say something like "Hey, how about Asteroids! I played for 14 hours straight once!" :) As for my Ikari Warriors reference, I'm sorry, but I'm sticking with it. It have four supre long, and repetitive levels. It seemed like over two hours to complete, although that was when I was 14, and time went by slower then.

I would say Ikari Warriors also. That game took around 3 hours to finish on the NES. Pitfall! The Lost Caverns on the Atari 2600 took a while to finish too. Especially the first time you played it and were figuring out where everything was hidden.

I'd actually place Mario Land among the shortest games I've ever beaten. O_o I can blow through it in no time, even when I played it for the very first time, just because it's so easy.

I do agree with those mentioning Blaster Master and Rygar. Talk about games that could use a password system.

No doubt. I talked to Steve Woita, one of the designers for Kid Chameleon for Issue 2 of Manci Games, and he recounted stories of people playing Kid C. for hours on end, pausing the game, leaving the Genesis on overnight, and gettting up in the morning to finish it. It really is an insane length.

I remember NES Metal Gear taking a pretty tidy sum of time also.

Heh, I believe it! After I had finally gotten good enough at the game to beat it, a good friend of mine wanted proof that I could actually get through. So I said, why not? I popped a VHS tape into my VCR and proceeded to record a run through the game. I had my VCR in "EP" mode so that I could record six hours of content on one tape.

I made it to the next to last stage (it's a "chase level", with one of those large spike walls, through an ice setting) when I ran out of tape. That's six solid hours of Kid Chameleon without reaching the final goal. While Rygar and Blaster Master are long games, they're not even in the same league when it comes to length!

And for the record, all three games are friggin awesome. :D

Although I haven't played Metal Gear since I beat it when it was new (I guess 1988 or 1989), if I remember right, it has a password feature. Either way, great game.

I know there's a "No RPG Rule" here....

but Hoshigami is unbelievably long, something like 400 hours if you do everything. Just thought I'd add that nugget.

I also imagine that someone could put an ungodly amount of time into something like Morrowind if you wanted to try and do as much as possible.

You know, you might be right. I don't remember. I do remember that a buddy of mine, his brother and I stayed up way too late on a summer night in '89 or so and played it all in one sitting. It may have had a password system, but we didn't use it. :)

Wonder Boy in Monster land was a good long bout for me. Rampage is a pain, and what seemed so fun for 20 minutes drags on and on and on... ugh I'd rather play SMB twice over than that game again! Lasted a good 3 hours if I remember correctly
