View Full Version : What Football Game Are You REALLY Playing?

I remember several months ago, people were screaming bloody murder when EA Sports got the exclusive rights to use the NFL licenses in football video games. EA was being called the anti-Christ...and that was one of the nicer things. So now that football season is now here, fess up...did you buckle down and buy Madden? Or are you playing a college game...or perhaps an older game made by someone else?

I really haven't been playing anything but I'm going to start. I'm not going to buy a new one as I never played the last game I bought much so I'm going back to that which was the NFL 2K5 game. Or I may go even further back and play the original NFL 2K series on my Dreamcast. It's not that I hate Madden or EA...I don't...I just don't see the point since I don't usually play football games for that long. I may as well just use whatever games I already have.

I still have Madden 2004. I suck at it, so I can't imagine I'd ever want to buy a newer version. The 2006 demos I've seen (others playing it or whatever) are pretty cool though.

Tecmo Super Bowl - NES

This will remain my football game of choice until something worthy comes along to dethrone it. Hasn't happened in 14 years, and I don't think it's going to.

My team is not playing until Monday night so I may try playing a few games tomorrow...once I decide which game I want to use. I've never bought a collegiate game...I just don't get into the college sports for some reason.

I play sega genesis Montan football for a quick fix. Even Madden 93.

Why? Because Lunar Dragon Song is killing my game time. Occupies way too much time.

I've been playing mostly ESPN NFL 2k5. Last year was the first time I bought Madden, and there really isn't much new in this year's version that makes me want to go out and buy it at the current price.

But I do what that new "Blitz" game. It will probably be the only football game I will purchase.

NFL 2K5 here. I don't plan on buying any of the Madden "updates".

I've been rotating Tecmo Super Bowls this year with my friends. We have seasons going on all of the following carts:

Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) original rosters
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) updated 05 rosters
Tecmo Super Bowl 3 (SNES) original rosters

One of my friends does have the new Madden and I've played a few games on it and I don't really like it. Personally I liked the 04 Madden better. I didn't play last years Madden since I did my normal rotation of companies and picked up 2K5. I think this years Madden was a step sideways, I'd like to say backwards but its not a bad Madden its just that I don't like the new features so I turn them off making it not that much of an improvement.

John Elway on my Nintendo Entertainment System.

I haven't played that in ages but I remember a play where if you pressed in a certain direction druing the snap you had super speed and could do laps around the field. Kind of like returning kick offs with Eric Metcalf on Joe Montanas Sports Talk Football for the Genesis.

My football "game of choice" is definitely Tecmo Super Bowl. With the ROM editors and yearly updates, its fairly easy to keep up with roster moves and such.

For current gen, the ONLY football game I buy is NCAA. I've been playing '06 quite a bit lately, what with the online and all. I prefer the college game mechanics to the pro game, so I rarely buy Madden until the next year's installment is out anyways. Being a student at Boise State, it just doesn't feel right playing football on a GREEN field either. Blech. LOL

ESPN 2k5 for me as well. It's really nothing against Madden, I just tend to update my sports games every 2 years or so. Probably next year I'll buy Madden.

I'm really interested in Blitz too - if it ends up being as good as it looks, I may have to pick that up as well.

NFL 2K5. Ever since I got NFL2K on Dreamcast I haven't played Madden. It's just not as fun. When does the exclusivity agreement end? Can't be soon enough. I still maintain that we gamers lose out because of this agreement. Sure it weeds out some crapass football games, and the NFL gets the royalties it needs to survive, but there were certainly TWO extremely competent games at the time they signed it.

Or Tecmo Bowl. Depends on where I am in the house.

Tecmo Bowl for NES
My cousin does this hail mary pass thing and scores about everytime. It's funny to watch. He keeps running back the the endzone and fires a wobbling duck all the way across the field.

I don't care for the Madden series. They look great but I'll be playing the computer most of the time. I'd play Blitz or something w/out rules.

It depends on the purpose:

Joe Montana Football (Game Gear) for nostalgia purposes (one of the first Game Gear games I ever owned.)

Madden 97 (Genesis) because a coworker at my old job suggested I get a Madden game. It is currently collecting dust do to me not liking the control.

NFL 2K1 (Dreamcast) is my choice. I got it as part of the Toys R Us clearance sale a while back (in a 3-pack no less with NBA 2K1 and World Series Baseball 2K1) and got hooked on it. The graphics are awesome, the commentary is good, and the controls are intuitive.

Since I don't play football games much (hell, I don't even WATCH football so figure that one out lol) I don't update the years.
