I've always wondered why the Dreamcast isn't still considered a current gen console. To me, it's a little of both.
Seriously... It came out mid/late '99 outside Japan. It's considered a "128-bit" system. If Sega hadn't axed it, it would just now be ending it's life cycle, and most of us would be pillaging the web; salivating over what Sega has in store for their next system...
But alas, that will never be. :(
So do you consider the Dreamcast a classic or current gen system? I'd make this a poll, but I'm too lazy. :D

Good question.
I still see it as current. I'm not sure why, but I guess it is just to graphically advanced to be called "classic."
Maybe after the next-generation of consoles moved in will I consider it "classic."
Unlike the two people above me, I don't think it failed.

I guess people say it's a classic system because of the earlier death. It been about 5 years since it's rise, and fall from fame. The Dreamcast is still IMO in limbo, which is worse....
It's a dead current gen system if you ask me.
It started off this generation and competed with the PS2. I consider it current gen. DC came out late 98 in Japan and 9/9/99 in the states. Long live the DC!
I'd definitely consider this current gen. Like was already said, it was released to compete with the PS2 and XBOX. And it may not be that dead, depending on how you look at it. There is still ongoing development being done for the DC, which includes many great commercial quality games! :)

This has been throughly covered many many times on this site.
I personally feel that the DC came between generations and should be in one of it's own (similar to the 3DO), however it is technically part of this gen.

I would say it is a current generation system, as many of the games are comparable to games on the three current systems. As far as collecting goes, I would say it's classic because of how great it is and its growing age. Around here, DC stuff is extremely hard to find.
I like to think of it as the first of the current gen systems, leading the way to 128. It introduced me to electronic crack.....Phantasy Star Online. 5 years and still playing.
Awesome aesthetics, bright graphics, "space age" controller design, freaky memory card. Cool games like Sega Marine Fishing. Old, new, dead, alive....it doesn't matter. The Dreamcast is a beautiful gaming console.

I think the DC made the guiness book of world records for most powerful game console. This was before PS2, of course. I still consider it one of the most innovative, that came just a little early.

Definitely current generation - just unsupported.
It competed directly with the PS2 (and managed to hold it's own in the US against Sony) and was still available in some stores when the Xbox and GCN came out.
It still got new releases in Japan (Shikigami and Psyvariar 2 for example) and got re-issues of best selling titles.
I definitely group it with the "128-bit" PS2/XB/GC consoles.
I see it as a current generation console, just a dead one.
Too bad really, it's packed with great games and I consider it SEGA's 2nd greatest console after the Genesis.

Dreamcast games are difficult to find around here and getting very expensive on ebay. I don't think it is because of collectors, I think it is because it is a current gen system which many people continue to use, yet with the lack of new software everything is getting gobbled up.
Of course on Nove. 22 it will be a classic system, along with your PS2, XBOX, and Gamecube...so the debate only has a few weeks of life left in it...

Dead Current Gen imo. It was the first of the "128 bit" systems and it was the first to die off too.

IMO it is a current Gen system. Many of my friends believe it's more of a last gen or a midgen system, regardless of my incessant preaching.
If Sega would've at least waited until the psone died, before closing off dc production, maybe it would receive a better view from the public on a historical level...

I consider it a soon-to-be-classic system, given the late 2005 launch of the Xbox 360. IMO, a system is considered classis after all hardware production and all software support have ceased. So per my definition, DC can also be classified as classic.
