View Full Version : How much does IGN value your game collection at?

Gemini-Phoenix
10-11-2005, 02:31 AM
I've recently been attempting to upload my collection to IGN, and it's taking me ages to do... I'm about a third of th way through, and already IGN value my games at just over $8,300.00... (Considering I am having a little difficulty seeing as the majority are PAL, and some games aren't even listed on IGN)

I was wondering ~ For those of you who have already done so - How much does IGN value your collection at?

I think I remember Joe saying that he was working on a similar feature for the DP collector's database. I hope he does, cause that would be sweet :D
I don't have my list on ign, but as hellvin said, the numbers cannot be correct.
Everytime I look at somebody's collection list, I see a ridiculous total that the total amount of games wouldn't amount too unless they were all new-era games.

Th fact that IGN doesn't really differenciate between PAL, NTSC J, and NTSC U games means you can never get an accurate reading. It also does not compensate for the differences invalue between sealed and unsealed games either.

One thing I find very annoying is: I own PAL and NTSC U versions of the same game, but IGN will only let me upload one or the other. The alternative is if you own all three regional variations, in which case you are allowed to choose "All", but this is very frustrating when compiling a list. Especially if you want to know how many games you own.

Also, you can't upload multiple versions of the same game. Some of us may own two or more of the same game from the same region ~ Some PAL games I own sealed and unsealed, yet the system won't acknowledge two or more copies.

I have also found that not everything is included. I have come across a few instances of LE games not being in the database, such as Metal Gear Solid III: Metal Edition...

It would be interesting to know exactly what price IGN values each individual game at though, and whether or not it changes at all...

Still, it's a nice feature to be able to load up your games and I hope Joe gets around to adding a similar feature on here as part of the online rarity database or something

Taken from a reply-post of mine a couple of months back:

Actually.. the IGN datbase.. as far as prices go.. is no longer being maintained OR updated. A couple of years back when IGN was tied in with a major game retail chain (which one.. escapes me now) they based their estimated values DIRECTLY on what their store "tie-in" charged. In other words.. you used to be able to buy games THROUGH IGN.. but they tied into Gamestop.. or the like.

So.. let's say you had a copy of Chrono Trigger to add to your collection. Once you did.. the value of your collection might go up by say.. $35; and if you bought a copy of CT from their Gamestop pages via IGN.. you'd pay $35 (I know this WAS the case because I thoroughly researched this one evening in their forums and their FAQ, and found this answer.. wondering and asking where they got their values from.). At the time however.. this wasn't very accurate as well. The reason? If you bought that copy of CT from them.. 99.9995% of the time.. you would simply recieve a bare cart. In fact.. the site would show a disclaimer stating the fact that one should realize; and count on getting a bare cart or CD MOST of the time.. as available. I never ordered 8 or 16-bit carts from them for that reason.. because I'm a completist. In fact.. out of about 5 or 6 current-gen titles I ordered.. only 1 ever came with a case and manual.. so I stopped. Now anybody also knows that a copy of CT with box-insert, manual & maps.. in any sort of semi-decent condition is worth.. or will fetch.. A LOT more than $35.. especially on eBay.

When the big game company and IGN stopped supporting each other awhile back.. I think IGN simply kept their pricing database.. and stopped updating it. I think I've pretty much proved that to myself because no matter what games I've added in the past year or so.. they ALWAYS seem to raise my value by never more than $20 to $25 exactly; anymore.

IGN is grossly undervalued in my opinion as well nowdays. Look at my collection.. I have approximately 650 games.. and MANY of mine are rare.. HTF.. or simply "wanted". Divide that 650 into the estimated value of $13,000 and you get about $20 per game.. value; as an average.. but 95% of my games are totally complete. Anybody would tell you that almost any complete "older" game is worth that much.. on a good day.. on eBay (NOT counting sports titles [of which I have NONE] or commons [of which I have few; i.e. Mario, Sonic, DK, etc.]). So you see what I'm getting at here? If all of my games are worth AT LEAST the $20.. but my Snatcher might be $75.. or my Metal Warriors might be $100.. then isn't my collection worth WELL more than $13,000? So I don't use the IGN figure as an accurate quote either.

Gemini-Phoenix

I was adding sub-collections all at once (Ie, all Pokemon games) for ease, and I am pretty sure some of my Pokemon games were valued at stupid prices!

However, I do have my fair share of rares in my lit, plus I added two Steel Battalion' early on which bumped up the price by a fair whack

And yes, I did count chao adventure. I have a vmu dedicated to it (too bad the battery is dead on it :( )

EDIT: I usually just input games as I buy them and look at the main number. I hinestly did not realize I had so many n64 games. And for awhile, I only had about 10 xbox games, and now I almost have as many xbox games as I do gc. I just now realized that. man, i need to get a room of doom going again! :deadhorse:
I have been telling myself i would do it since i moved into my new place (beating the dead horse again, I know he will wake up eventually :deadhorse: )

For some reason I'm not thinking these prices are correct reflective of what I actually own. The games I've entered thus far are priced well above what I got them for and don't even sell for these values in the stores. I'm lazy so if someone finds out where they get their estimated values from and how often those values are renewed or re-estimated, please let me know. :)

I'm not actually that fussed over the valuation of my collection, but I would like to perhaps have the PAL names for my consoles (Mega CD, not Sega CD and Mega Drive, not Genesis), more options for imports etc.

The DP collector database/lists are good, but I would like some sort of summarising graph like IGN's. If anything, it makes bragging easier. :P
