The U.S. and European installed base for current generation systems shows PS2 at 51 million units, followed by Xbox at 18 million and GameCube at 13.2 million.
According to the new report from WMS. Sony will "likely" cut the price of PS2 from $149 to $99 at or around the same time as the introduction of Xbox 360 in late November. It's thought unlikely that Microsoft will follow suit. Talk of the company's "support" for current generation systems won't stretch to it taking yet more losses on its expensive-to-produce debut machine. Sony has been far more efficient in its manufacturing costs.
WMS forecast for (European and U.S combined) hardware sell-through is 12.2 million for PS2, 5.1 million for Xbox and 2.7 million for GameCube. It says Xbox 360 will sell 2.5 million.
The company says total hardware sales for this year will hit 40 million up from 35 million last year.
Xbox 360 Predictions
It's also predicting an Xbox 360 tie-ratio of 2 games at purchase followed by three games after two months, and beyond. The same ratio is predicted for Revolution and PlayStation 3's launch.
WMS's report appears to be confident that Xbox 360 will manage 1.5 million units in the U.S. and 1 million units in Europe this year. The forecast presumes that the company began manufacturing the Xbox 360 in mid-August, and that initial production was 100,000 units per week, ramping to 150,000 or more by year-end. WMS says the company will manufacture an average of 125,000 – 135,000 over the 20-week period following the start-up. Xbox software sales will contribute $380 million in 2005.

12 million more PS2s (possibly) sold? not bad, but I was hoping for an Xbox1 drop to $99 looks as though that might not happen or at least until stores start to clear out their supply of the Xbox1 ?
That's what I'm waiting for. I currently don't have or "need" a slim PSTwo, but a price drop will make me go and buy one.

Same here I need a more portable PS2.

That'll show 'em Sony. I'm sure all those early-adopters haven't picked up a PS2 yet. x_x
Makes sense.
This would be the next step (dropping the PStwo down to $99) for it's last big holiday season before the PS3 hits.
This should move a lot of PStwo consoles.

Excellent! I do not have a slim PS2 yet either, this will be a nice Christmas present to myself after Christmas is over!
(Cause I sure don't know anyone who has the cash to buy me a 360 for Christmas! :P )

My PS2 is dying, so what better way then to get a PStwo for $100 bucks in a little more then a month. I can deal with no blue-bottom games for that long :)

I doubt they will be £55 over here, probably more like £70. They're £100 here now and people are saying they're selling for $150 in America (is that right?) which is around £82.
But if they were £55, that would mean used PS2s would be about £30. I could do with another one because my 4 year old one is dying, but I can't afford £60-75 for a used one currently.

I'm on the exact same boat. Hopefully pick one up by the end of the year.

The genius of SONY's marketing strategy is clearly breathtaking.

I've been without a PS2 since my wife started playing FFXI. Every time I try to play a PS2 game, she bites me. Now I can grab a used slim one for less that the price of stitches.

While a $100 PS2 is nice, i'm still hoping the XBOX follows with that same price drop.

I dont know how many times its been said, but that simply WILL NOT happen. They've already stoped making XBox's, and they are still selling at $150. Unless all of a sudden EVERYONE stops buying the systems, and they find themselves with a few dozen warehouses full, they arent going to change the price at all.

Nice tactic by Sony, seen it before with other systems too. Maybe I'll try to wait and buy a slim PS2 then after the price drop.
Now here's a question: Since they stopped making X-Boxes and the backwards compatability is only for the 360 w/ the hard drive, you think that may help Sony out some this holiday season?

As far as I am aware, Sony are not planning any price cut for the PlayStation 2. Rumours are that the PlayStation Portable will drop in price soon, though. I think somebody is a little confused.

I sure hope there's a price drop. It would be about time. I still need a US PS2, and I may as well get the slim one in order to tell it apart from my Japanese system (assuming the slim one doesn't have any problems that the original doesn't?).

With the PS2 at $99 what will the price of the Game Cube be? :hmm:

Maybe they'll pay you to take it? Just kidding, love my cube. The Xbox is the only one I don't have yet, too bad it's staying high.

I feel the same way as both of you. I'm so tired of seeing "Disk Read Error". I might get a PStwo when it's at $100.

Could you post where you read this? Only news I remember is that they stopped buying a certain chip from Nvidia, but who knows how long their current supplies will last.
Somehow I doubt you'll be able to post some facts supporting that.

Indeed!
If only Sony would release a PSTwo LCD combo. :)

I only have an X-Box.
I may end up buying a PS2 now actually. With Strategy and Tactics type games as my favourite, there are simply lots of PS2 only games that i'd enjoy.
I'd buy the Cube if they dropped it to 50$ :)

really hmm? http://www.benheck.com/Games/Sony_projects/PS2p/PS2p%201.htm
i'll probally get a slim PS2 for collectors sake but this will force the price for used older ones/broken PS2's down and i want to stock up on these systems, kinda like N64 now and what PS1/X will be in the next 6 months...good ol number of $20

Pretty much the same here as well. My laser stopped reading anything at all a few days ago (the day after I bought We Love Katamari...curses!), so the thing is basically a glorified Dexdrive at the moment. >_> Here I was thinking I'd have to wait for the PS3 launch to replace it...
...though a PS2 TEST system would be ideal. ;)

Come on now...Gamestop and EB will have adds stating that you can get either system for 49.99 (after you trade in your XBOXor PS2, PSP, 20 Games, and sign away your first born)

They had an ad for Gran Tursimo 4 for 39.99 if you trade in 3 games O_O.
If the price drops I plan on getting one too, and then maybe modchip on so I can play timesplitters 2 against my bro and not buy an extra copy.

If the price of PS2s does srop to about $100, then that means that the price for them may drop a bit more at my favorite local used video-games store, and then as people begin tradeing in PS2s for cash for the 360s and/or PS3s, the price may drop even further, and then as prices get low enough, I may try to buy a fat PS2 really cheap, used of course, and get a HD Loader disk or something simular and pop in a big old HDD so I never had to use the disk drive to play games. I do not yet have a PS2, but I truely believe with all of my heart, and with every fiber in my body, that eventulay, within the next year, proably less than half a year, I caould proably get a used fat PS2 from the previously mentioned used game store for less than $50, hopefully somewhere between $30 and $40 (however that might be getting a bit TOO hopefull), but I truely believe that they will reach the under $50 mark at this store. Then I may get one, depending on how cheap XBs get as I am always looking for more of those, it may be a hard choice for me soon to get used XBs or a used PS2 as I do not yet have a PS2 but I want several more XBs to hack and mod.
They WILL Get Cheaper, I KNow It!
