I think the best is MK2 an MK3

dreamcaster

MK2 was easily the best, as it actually improved upon the original significantly. Plus the arcade version was just so damn violent! (in its day...)

All the other MK games (3 onwards) were just blatantly cheap attempts to improve an aging franchise.

And you forgot about Ultimate MK3!

Mine isn't on the list. MK: Sub Zero for the N64 was different from the others, and alot of fun.

I think Mortal Kombat 2 is definately the best one of the series...
Because, like dreamcast said, MK2 improved a lot upon the original and the other games just look like clones of themselves to me. MK3, UMK3, MKT, doesn't really matter which one you play, the only difference will be the amount and choice of characters and maybe stages, but that's it.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy has two versions an N64 and a psx one. The 64 one was god awful, I mean awful. God awful, but the one on playstation was like the tiger said, greeeeeeat.

And I played DA for about an hour with a few friends, fell in love with that. Its violant tastic, where else can you stab someone with a sword, then shoot a spear into there face, and rip there head off.

My only beef with DA is no baraka. :(

What no Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to choose from DAH! Well i pick Mortal Kombat 3 then since it's almost the same game. It's just that I like UMK more.

I went with Mortal Kombat 2. It was my favorite by far, since I used to play it all the time at the Arcades, and then on my SNES. 2nd place goes to the original.

I can't seem to get on with the Mortal Kombat series. I have always felt *Restricted* opposed to Street Fighter games.

I put the Rom of MK II on my Ngage the other week, and for the life of me I can't even seem to get a punch or kick in edgeways! I totally get my arse kicked, and for once, not because I am crap - Simply because it is impossible to play on the Ngage.

I would probably vote for number 4 out of those listed above, but simply because it offers a wider range of movement than the previous ones. However, I did enjoy playing number 3 a lot more, and is what I would class as the quinticential MK game...

MK2 is my favorite fighting game ever (I'm not a big fighting fan, though :) ). I also really like MK Deception as that game really went back to the MK roots with all of the old MK2 levels and MK2 characters like Baraka finally coming back.

MK2 was definately the best. Plus it was the first game I remember as being graphically similar to arcade games. Not that there weren't any before it, but I remember waiting to get the first copy that came into the video store. I kept it for like two weeks and had to give up a week's allowance in late fees. But it was worth it; noone could be me when I was Reptile.

yes easy pick MK2 used to rule the arcades well until Killer Instinct was released.

I remember playing nothing but MK2 and Killer Instinct for like 2 whole summers also when MK3 was released all of the regulars at the arcade I used to frequent were verry dissapointed including me most of us went right back to playing KI , MK2 and the various Streetfighters.

Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 equal greatness. I didn't really like Trilogy the controls were a ittle off and the "new" style grphics were close to being terrible. I didn't really like Deception, I felt like it is a Mortal Kombat that just doesn't fit in the MK series.

MKII is easily the best one. Some combos took real skill to pull off; such as the jump reverse kick -> teleport punch -> spear -> uppercut with Scorpion. God, I loved doing that. However, it's so easy to do in all the Mortal Kombats after that.

II, of course. Baraka remains my all time favorite game character. Anyone that can push two slabs of steel through someones chest and smile as he watches them slide down gets my vote.

Four has some of the best fatalities though. Quan Chi's leg rip is the greatest thing to ever happen to video game violence.

Kiliing someone by beating them with their own dismembered leg like a baseball bat: priceless.

Mortal Kombat II is by far my favorite, and the only MK game I currently own. I'm really not that big of an MK fan, but I do really like MK II and maybe even MK Trilogy. The first one is ok, the third one kinda sucked...and I never bothered with the 3D ones.

I've always been a huge Mortal Kombat fan. I don't care what any of the fighting game "purists" think, MK remains my favorite fighting game series of all time, and certainly the one I've played the most. To this day, no game has equalled MK's excellent atmosphere and design. The storyline, the announcer, the voices, the backgrounds, the music, the secrets, the violence, the moves, the fatalities, and especially the characters... everything is great. Perhaps the gameplay is stiff, but the easy-to-perform (and often "cheap") moves allows MK to be picked up even by non-fighting game fans and enjoy it a lot. Sure, it's mostly style over substance (which I usually hate), but I can't help but love it. It pained me to see this once-popular franchise fall from grace and basically become a joke to most game players out there. Thankfully, it's made a wonderful comeback, and now it's stronger and better than ever. My favorite game in the series is probably Mortal Kombat 2, although the two newer ones (Deadly Alliance and Deception) are excellent in their own right. Mortal Kombat 4/Gold was also fun and underrated. Then comes (Ultimate) Mortal Kombat 3/Trilogy, which wasn't that good honestly. The original is the least fun, in my opinion, although it obviously deserves props for starting the whole thing.

To me, the vast and ever-expanding MK universe can serve as a premise to dozens of great non-fighting game concepts. I thought the adventure mode in Deception offered a glimpse at what is possible, although it was flawed in many ways. I haven't played much of Sub-Zero Mythologies, and I haven't played Special Forces at all... yet. It's a shame that these games are (supposedly) awful, although I'm sure that I'd enjoy them anyway. I do have very high hopes about the upcoming Shaolin Monks (which was a dream come true to me when it was announced; something that I've always wanted), and I'm glad about Midway's plan to alternate between an MK fighting game and MK non-fighting game yearly. Lots of potential right there.

Oh yeah, and the movies (yes, including Annihilation) rocked, and are by far the best video game movies ever... which is admittedly not saying much when compared to the likes of Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter, but still. Oh yeah, maybe The Wizard was better. LOL The soundtrack to the original MK movie is simply awesome.

I've always favored the genesis version of MK2. I enjoyed it is a kid but now I find the series pretty overrated.

It somehow has the best playability for me.

MK II is by far the best MK ever in my opinion. When they made part 2, it was the perfect step forward in the evolution of the series.

THe music rocked as well!

Hmmmm my all time favorite Mortal Kombat has got to be Mortal Kombat 4. The weapons were awesome. I think it was the one game in the Mortal Kombat series that made the biggest leap from the previous one. I had plenty of good times playing this one on the arcade. The arcade guys were kind enough to post a complete moves sheet on the side of the machine, I used Sub-Zero. 8-)

Mortal Komat 1 for me. I have such great memories of playing the genesis version at my cousins house as a youth. I was scared of Goro's Lair :embarrassed: but I was only 7 years old or so when it came out.

I eventually got it on my SNES and never played it, this was about 10 years ago.

The series is very poor in general, I was always a bigger Street Fighter fan, but when you're young the blood is too awesome.

Gotta go with MK II. It's the perfect upgrade from the original. The movements and contact points have been perfected. The animation quality is better. The music and sound effects are excellent along with the soundtrack that adds to the overall atmospher of the game.

Trilogy is the best...40+ characters, it was the best of MK, MK II, MK3 and UMK3 all crammed into one package. Everything was available from the get go, not as much having to mess around with codes and crap. Even the bosses were selectable from the main screen. So convenient, I have a crappy PS1 version though, the PS controller sucks gigantic amounts of ass. I really need to find the Saturn version, but it's very expensive.

I really can't see how anyone can pick any other MK other than II. Unlike the best Mario, Castlevania, Zelda, Mega Man, (etc.) game, where there is room for debate, the best MK game truely is no contest. Toasty!

Mortal Kombat 2 was the best to me comparing the 16-bit era of systems. Personally I like the ones made for the N64, and hear the 4th one was crazy insane with gore. But based off memories and all, the 2nd was the best.

I voted in Mortal Kombat 2.

Because for adds:
- Each fighter had 2 fatalities ( except Shang Tsung had 3 fatalities )
- 3 Stage fatalities: The Pit 2, Kombat Tomb and Dead Pool
- 3 Secret Charcaters: Jade, Smokde and Noob Saibot
- Babality and Friendship: I had fuuny in contrast to violence chacteristic of this game
- More stages than MK 1
- The fighters had more attacks than MK 1

My favorite would be the original MK. Loved it in the arcade but logged most of my hours with it on the Super NES. I am one of the few who will admit to liking that version better than the Genesis one, but both are fantastic.

After all these years, MK2 is still my fave. I played it a lot in my youth on the SNES, just wasting a lot of time beating up a P2 "dummy" just so I could perform a Fatality on him/her. Heh... good times.

I honestly didn't care for the series at all to be honest, as I always felt the character movements and controls respectively were too stiff compared to Street Fighter II, Fatal Fury, AOF and the other games of the time. However, out of all the MK games I'd say the 1st one is the only one that ever mattered to me.

I like MKII, but mostly because I got a good deal on the Japanese PS version of it. I don't know if the arcade version is like this, but the AI is crazy -- it spams you with projectiles when you're far away, and when you get within fighting range you get thrown. It's fun, but not very deep.
