Humm Fasitnating that appears to be a Super Famicom XBAND. It would allow you to play against other people online .

No theres no service.

I remember we stocked some n64 sets at my store "shady lik sang style crap" that came with a modem device and a keyboard I always wondered how that would work.... there would have to be some kind of external support Id assume.

There was one made by Interact, Sharknet or something. IIRC it was just a basic email system, with a 14.4k modem in the cart. Complete crap, though I recall reading a feature about in Gamepro. Which is certainly fitting, I guess. ;)

I've heard there are projects trying to make use of some of this old hardware like XBand and Sega Channel to make new networks for things like netplay and such -- dunno how much progress they've made...

When I was young I used it at my friends house. We were challenging some guy in Mortal Kombat or something, can't really remember how it worked exactly.

there something similar in z-snes....tel-net...i am sure if you figured out how to dial directly into who evers line and their x-band picked it up it would still work....weither its worth it or not is another question

remember when these came out in the US and were advertised in EGM. Did not know they came out in Japan though.
