View Full Version : Annoying eBay newbies...

On October 8th, a certain eBay newbie (with 2 positive) bid and won two of my items. I didn't invoice him right away because I saw he had bid on my other items that were ending in a few days.
Fast forward 6 days, and he wins another one of my auctions. I finally invoice him, and he sends a reply saying that he is "retracting" his bid on the two items he previously won because he's no longer interested in them, but that he is paying for the game won yesterday.
WTF!?
I sent him a civil reply, stating that an eBay win is a legally binding contract. But seriously, don't you just want to do slap them after such a pompous and assuming reply.
I know eBay newbs are not a new annoyance, but I mean how do you deal with them when they give you ignorant grief!?

Did he reply to your answer?

That has got to be annoying. But bidding is such a simple process. You bid, win and pay, that is all. I would either sell him everything or nothing at all.

Here's his first email to me:
Hello, [my username is] Magpie302. FF3 purchase. This is my within 3 day contact. I've sent a paypal payment, i assume i've done something wrong as i did not find a way to specifically enter spidey300@yahoo.com to send the payment. If not and all is well, very good then. Again I apologize for the retraction on the items Kirby's all stars and Brainlord.
Here's MY response:
Corey,
A winning bid on eBay is a legally binding contract. Why bid on something, win it, and then wait several days before even mentioning that you do not want it. That's not how eBay works, and not very courteous.
I am hoping you will reconsider your decision, and make payment on the items you won.
Alex
Finally, here's his reply:
I'm aware, and like I said, I'm sorry. Got a little trigger happy, just starting out with my new found e-bay addiction and to be honest even forgot about having those 2 games still hanging there. I feel bad for my retraction and will not let such happen again with other bids but unfortunately I will be unable to change my mind. Once again, very sorry, feel free to tarnish my buyers record with a negative comment and hopefully this does not affect my purchase of FF 3.

He advocated it! Tarnish away is what I'd do, and personally, I'd be an asshole and tell him to fuck off with buying your FF3 and relist it. Leave a negative for all 3 and see how well his "new found ebay addiction" pans out after this.

Tricky situation. If you sell him FF3 it would look strange if you leave him 2 negative and 1 positive feedback. I think I would have said all or nothing. If you recive 3 negative feedbacks with only 2 in feedbackscore, dont you get kicked from Ebay?

Well only 1 negative counts towards the user's score because the score is based on unique user feedback. I am not sure if 3 negs in a row from the same user is enough to NARU an ebayer.
I agree with others here and tell the user to honor all of his bids or he gets nothing.

Negs don't get people naru'ed, filing reports does

I'd refuse to sell FF and report him for non payment and neg him. Now I know why so many people are eager to sell their stuff here rather than ebay.

I think you can get him booted off if you file for all of the items (including FF3). 3 non paying bidder strikes, and the person is gone.

I'd tell him its an all or nothing deal.

How much did the first games go for? Send him the other games/games instead.

It is amazing how little honour people have. Suck it up and take the loss, it is your damned fault if you bought something you didn't want. I hope you get your money there Chrono.

Hehe .. sounds like the best solution to me. Send him the first two games (presuming the FF3 money covers that). Then send him an invoice for the remainder. If he doesn't pay up, send a refund for any excess and neg his ass :)

That's evil  but I suppose it would be well deserved. Just make sure to ship them with delivery confirmation in case he tries complaining to PayPal

What? Non-collectors and internet-auction newbies? On eBay? Impossible!

Ha, sounds kind of like something I once did. I had someone win auction, she paid with a form of payment I stated I don't accept (credit card PayPal payment), and when I sent a message clearly stating her options for payment (enough options that anyone could find an easy way to pay), she replied with a short message stating basically that she couldn't complete the transaction then. Since I KNEW she could simply put the funds in her PayPal balance and pay directly from that, I got kind of annoyed that she was cancelling the transaction when I suggested nothing of the sort. So I was fed up with getting problems with credit card payments, I decided to upgrade my account, and since I had not yet refunded her credit card payment, I accepted it. Then I shipped out the game, even though I noticed that she had already won an auction for another copy of the game. I bet she was annoyed to end up with two copies. :P I never did hear back from her, though.

Forward his replies to ebay staff, so in the future he doesn't get 'trigger happy' and leave them hanging.
Now you are stuck with the re-listing fees, thanks to some idiot.
Luckily I haven't had this happen to me yet, but I can see where you would be frustrated.
Good luck with the buyer!

Filing and winning NPB reports gets closing costs back and the first relisting is free. You can't file on FF3 because there is proof that one was paid and you could face getting booted for filing false claims. I've been in this boat before and the threat (bluffing of course) of sending nothing usually gets the other items paid for. I've yet to be called on my bluff. Good luck

Well here's an update everyone. I sent him a reply based on some of the responses I got from some trusty DP friends.
Corey,
Either you purchase all of the games, or none of them. I refuse to reinforce this type of attitude or behavior where a buyer believes they can retract their bids on several items after winning them because they were "trigger happy". You purposely won the items, so it should be just as simple to honor your winning bids.
Alex - spidey300
Here is his attempt to be proper and civil for his reckless behavior and attitude, but I'm not buying it.
I am just a new inexperienced buyer, learning as I go. I refuse to have my lesson cost me the total of 3 games rather than one. I'm sorry you feel the way you do but apparently it is unavoidable as I am also sorry that this happened at all. In the future I will be more responsible with my purchases/bidding and follow a more appropriate conduct. Again, my apologies, I'm sure you will have no trouble finding another buyer as I am sure I will have no trouble finding another FF 3. Please be sure to refuse the payment that I have sent your way.
Have a great day.
Well I'm seeing red after that response. I guess he didn't take my bluff, 8bitnes, so I'm 0/1.
But the ball's still in my court, so I start filing Unpaid Items on his arse. He responds to the first one quickly with a "Buyer refuses to pay" selection.
Once he gets to the second one, he starts to realize whats about to happen.
Squirm oh pompous one. Squirm like the little insignificant worm that you are. And squirm he does. Check out his email where he figures that since he hasn't rubbed my back, I should rub his.
I don't suppose there is any way of resolving this peacefully. Like a mutual agreement of a no sale perhaps. I just cannot afford the full purchase but it would be nice to walk away without the possible suspension of my account. If my account will not be suspended then by all means put a strike on it if you feel it is necessary, I'll take it a s a lesson learned. I just don't feel this incident justifies my expulsion from ebay altogehter.
Magpie
It's too bad, cause he's going to have "learn as he goes", the hard way.

My, my....he gave in! Looks like getting three NPB's and the possibility of a suspension was too much for him.
Just a couple hours later, he sends me this:
If you are willing, I have found a way to purchase these items. I would like to put this to rest by honouring my purchase. Sorry for the hassle.
Hey, 8bitnes....make that 1/1 ;)

Two words: BE CAREFUL.
This guy seems like a slippery character. A quick check of his bidding activity shows that he is currently bidding on no less than SEVEN other copies of FF3 (and is winning on two of them!)
So don't retract anything at all until you have the money and have downloaded it into your bank account ... oh, and the stuff about not being able to afford to pay for all three of the games he won from you is obvious BS, given the amount of other SNES stuff he is bidding on. Unless he intends to welsh on it all.

So much for learning as he goes
Sheesh. I've had some buyer's regret that has cost me some serious money, but I still went ahead and paid. My reward for that was the one time I had the seller refuse to sell the item after I won it because he wanted more money.

Also, if you receive 2 separate payment, be sure to send two different packages each with their own tracking number otherwise he could try to turn it around on you.

Well, he actually paid and the money is on its way to my account. I'm not sure, though, how he could screw me over if I sent them in one package, which is what I was planning to do. Yes, he did make two separate payments for the three items, but I'm still not sure how he could turn that around on me.
