I've been looking alot into the Neo Geo AES system, and I'm thinking about purchasing one this christmas instead of saving for a next gen console... Well the only one comming out is Xbox 360, but still, forking of about 300 smacks for a classic console might sound crazy to some of you. What really got me thinking was when I saw some KOF 98 pictures, and started comparing them to SNES games like STF turbo, and I have to say, even though it's already known, that they really did bring the Arcade home!

Just looking at the over all detail in the background images got me drooling. I mean this game was made a good while back, and still looks excellent. Even it's previous installments look sharp.

Anyway those are my thoughts of the day:)

I'd rather get an Xbox 360. But whatever floats your boat :)

I'm an all out firm 360 endorser, but honestly, if you're a true collecter or you just simply love SNK, go with the AES now and get the 360 later.

I would go for the NEOGEO AES....and get a bunch of games if you can....I have a AES and i love it....the 360 will only get cheaper the AES will most likely get more expensive to collect for....

the Neo Geo will at least hold its value. the day will come when the 360 is worth $50 and the Neo Geo is still worth $300 or more.

Yea indeed,

The more, and more I think about it, I think I'll be getting one. I'm well aware the games are hard to come by, but I'm sure some Dp guys have some up for sell if I ever really can't find any.

The longer you wait to buy the XBOX360, the cheaper it will be. The longer you wait to buy the AES, the more expensive it will be. (I think.)

I love the AES even though some of the games cost a fortune (Yes you can use a Phantom-1 for MVS games) and if you can afford it, get one. The 360 will fall in price, the AES is only going to continue to cost more.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I think I'll purchase me one off this site. Hopefully by the time I do they will still have one.

Looks like the cheaps rout would be to get the Neo Geo Cd base version. I can get that, and the game for under $100. I did her something about the load times being kinda long, and something about the system breaking down etc. Can anyone here confirm this?

I'm not sure what this "phantom -1" you speak of?

If you're just interested in the games you can use an old PC and for about $300 build yourself a full size MAME upright, all those NeoGeo arcade games are emulated in MAME.

Or could just shove a TV out card in an old PC running MAME and build yourself a couple arcade sticks. :)

If you just want to play the games and are strapped for cash... might I suggest *whispers* get a modded XBOX with MAME and enjoy all the NG games through that...

If money isn't a factor I say go for it!

If you are serious about collecting Neo titles, get a MVS system that’s been made into a home console. It may cost you more right from the start but in the long run it will definitely pay for itself. There are some games that you will simply not be able to afford on the AES and some are amazing. Games like:

-Metal Slug 1-5 and X
-Later Samurai Showdown titles (IV,V and V Special)
-Later KoF titles
-Shooters like Pulsar and Blazing Star
-Games like Shock Troopers that were never released on the AES
-Top Hunter
-Garou: Mark of the Wolves

Most of the games above will run big $$ for an AES copy. As a matter of fact the early Slugs will cost you well over $1500-2500 and let me tell you, they are amazing titles. Like I said, it cost more $$ up front (say, $350-450 for the system) but after that, you can get $2000 titles like Metal Slug 1 for under $100.

Agrees the MVS games might not looks as pretty on a shelf but they are hela cheaper. Or you could go with the phantom 1 converter that lets you play mvs games on your aes, but those go for atleast 250 on ebay. I love my AESes but damn if they arn't expensive.
