View Full Version : How long till M$ release a handheld?

So how long do you guys think it will be before Microsoft enters the handheld market?
Surely it's inevitable that M$ aren't gonna let Nintendo and Sony rule the handheld market (along with a small hardcore userbase of GPX2).
Maybe we'll see something a year or two so after the release of the 360. It'll probably work with the whole PC<->X360 media player set-up. I don't think we'll see anything revolutionary, like the DS touchscreen, It'll be pad, buttons and a screen (one can only pray for a stick like the NGPC). As for the media format, who knows.
But I am very interested to see what they do...

Never, I hope. We have enough handhelds out there, I don't think we need another one.

Hard to say. Although I can't really see them ever getting into the handheld market. Even with the release of the PSP, I still think Nintendo controls it, and I think Microsoft realizes that.

Yeah we definitely have enough handhelds right now. To be honest i was happy with just one. Beside MS gave up on making a handheld a long time ago. For the the focus is the home.

I think they have already started to enter it with Nintendo per say- with the almost recent support of Rare on the DS, I think M$ is trying to get some more interest in the Japan front. When the japenese ppl pick a game of banjo kazzoie and it reads microsoft/rare ? they make take note. Also its good for buisness with the Nintendo DS being the best portable to invest in because it appeals more.
Just my 2 cents.

That means Microsoft. I think if they develop software for this generation of handhelds, they will try to make one the next. I don't think it will be well received, though.

If you are serious about this, M$ is an acronym for Microsoft, and people use the dollar sign to symbolise their lust for money.

Huh. Well, I refuse to read anyone's posts who has a low enough IQ to refer to Microsoft as "M$"
That said, Sony is the one who deserves a $ sign - with their constant shitting out consoles purely for money, not developing any games for them themselves. Their overpricing of UMDs, constant attacks on homebrew (oh noes!! because a few hundred people might pirate things instead of buying them)

Oh God, do shut up.
I couldn't see MS trying to go handheld if their Xbox consoles aren't anything but sucessful. A bad rep around the Xbox would probably damage handheld sales, especially with the already espablished Nintendo system and Playstation brand.
Personally, I'd like to see a whole lot more Nintendo/MS co-operation on the DS, may get some good games out of it.
I have still to see a portable that I'm happy with. I would like to see a portable computer shaped like a Gameboy SP, but with two more buttons and extra battery life.

Well said my friend. LOL
If Microsoft does indeed make a handheld, I myself won't be buying it. Why? I have enough consoles already. My SNES, N64, NES, Genesis, and Xbox never see action. My most active console is the PS2, followed by the Cube. I survived passing on the PSP and DS, so I'm sure I can survive another handheld launch.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.
I'd imagine that an MS handheld would be something like the gp2x (http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=126&products_id=7728&#links) except with WMP instead of linux, and more 3rd party support. Thats just me though.

Only Sega can save the handheld market with an all new revolutionary handheld that is backwards compatible with all previous Sega consoles, including the 32X, Mega CD and Pico, and that doubles as a controller for their new groundbreaking 12341835y2385 bit console that is will blow M$ XBOXOR and $ony's Pi$$3 and Nint$$$endo'$ Revol$$$ion away with it's amazing super pimpED out ultra gazillion bit goodness.

As for M$, well it's an old standard, but honestly today it's a little immature. Honestly i'm liking Microsoft more and more everyday. Namely because Sony keeps getting worse and worse and Steve Jobs is an arrogant asshole. :)

Honestly no i don't expect my writing to get you out of here. But you'd think after the massive backlash you're receiving from the regulars that you might actually smarten up.
However you seem hell bent on continuing your ways and causing many threads to spiral into chaos. If you keep it up the mods will take notice. Once they get pissed off things like banishment may follow.
Now back to the subject at hand. Someone said earlier that MS and Rare are releasing games for Nintendo products. A smart move if you ask me. They get money from the handheld games market without the expensive cost of developing a system, they may gain some standing in japan, and they could also form a bit of a bond with Nintendo. After all the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Sony is Microsofts enemy, Nintendo doesn't even want to compete.
Staying out of the handheld race is good business for them.

I agree, if MS were to get into the handheld market, I think it would be more of a multimedia device similar to the PSP that could play music, video, photos, have wireless streaming abilities that can be used with Windows Media Center, that would also play games, and can have various software (not just games) running on Windows CE, and I would imagine it would have a hard drive similar in size to the ones used in iPods.

An excellent point. a Pocket PC isn't a dedicated gaming device like a DS or PSP, but it could be a viable gaming platform if properly managed and marketed. Right now it's gaming libray is kind of limited but on the plus side it does allow homebrew software.
Not to mention can do video, music and pictures. Hmm that really give me something to think about.

Oops I feel my post kind of derailed the topic. That was not my intentions; I was just trying to be funny. Not start a flame war. I know who M$ is, I just thought it would be funny to suggest they were some company in Hong Kong making handhelds to confuse the people who did not know what M$ was. Sorry :embarrassed:

I would see it as a device similar to the Zodiac. Basically a PocketPC optimized for gameplay. Although, I don't see MS releasing one anytime soon. They would probably wait until the Xbox is more successful, or profitable, before jumping into another console race.

Oh wow , all of a sudden this thread got really civil again :eek 2:
Let's keep it that way ;) I think Microsoft could get into the handheld market , but does anybody think they will actually do it ?
I suspect they will in the next 5 years some time.
More "players" in the field of handhelds hopefully will mean more innovation and possibly better quality IMO.
P.S. Gamefaq sucks

First of all, the M$ and $ony thing drives me nuts. The only reason that Sony got involved with the gaming industry was Nintendo asked them to!
Second, I doubt that Microsoft will do a portable anytime soon. It seems like they are still losing money on the XBox, so I doubt they would want to try launching another system right now. Also, like was mentioned, they are letting Rare dev for the DS.
I think Microsoft sees the real battle as them vs. Sony and by weakening the PSP, they are weakening the Sony brand, and in a way the PS3. I don't think either Sony or MS sees Nintendo as their true competition. You know what they say "My enemies enemy is my friend".

well Microsoft is in the handheld industry - its actualy all over the handheld industry - it makes a ton of money there --
-- not realy in the hand held gameing arena but still in the handheld arena.
if microsoft does indeed become successful in the gameing industry - im sure there will be a microsoft hand held - in a few years i wouldnt be surprised if microsoft stars thinking about minitureizing the xbox
i can see microsoft waiting to see how the current handhelds do before movieng ahead with anything
and if they do - i dont think it will be like a pocket PC
well actualy i can see them haveing 2 hand helds a pocket pc like device - and a entertainment device
