Ever been at a thrift store, flea market, garage sale, dumpster, etc., and seen a box of games for ____ system? Though the deal was reasonable, at the time you passed on them because "I'll never collect games for THAT system."

Then a few weeks, months, years later, for some reason, you change your mind.

What systems have you changed your mind about?

WHY did you originally plan to NOT collect for ___ system?

Which one was THE system you never thought you'd collect for? And which one surprised you the most?

I never thought I'd ever collect for Commodore 64.

I thought it was kind of weird and I didn't know much about it other than there's nothing in the wild out here for it well I found out alot of info about it and really got into it!

Now that I have my own money I'm buying alot of neat stuff for it from ebay! :)

Never wanted an Odyssey 2. then I saw a boxed one w/ several games for 7 bucks at the local Goodwill. Then Joe sent me even more O2 games from that big contest last year. Voila. Instant "collection" :D

The Turbo Grafx-16. In my area when it had just come out the only store that sold it was Toys R Us, at a premium /above/ the normal retail price, and over an hour away from where I lived, to boot. As young as I was at the time the chances of acquiring one (Let alone regularly get any games for it) were slim to none, particularly since the store stopped supporting the platform in about two years. As it was I had to make do with the NES and SMS (Even then another scarcity at the time) and the system was relegated as an object of unatainable mystique. It didn't matter much as soon after the Genesis came and dominated everything anyways.

Fast forward to 2002, when I dig up some EG&CE issues and peruse them. Wow, TG-16, thought I, now loaded with disposable income and imbued with the power of the internet at my fingertips. I had used emulators before, to be sure, but I decided I wanted one for real. I traded a complete Secret of Mana for a complete system and Bonk's Adventure, been hooked ever since.

The games just seem to have a lively aura in general, like the developers cared about them, and it shows. NES games tend to wallow in mediocrity, Genesis games are often murkey and drab, I could go on about each console's 'feel', but with the TG-16, it's quite distinct and very pleasant to experience.

My only lament is that TG-16 stuff on ebay tends to be pricey, and they're just about non-existant in fleas where I've looked.

Beleive it or not, it was the NES for me, and fairly recently, too... I was a die hard Genny fanboy for a while, and then while I was checkin' out the thrifts, I happened to get a Zelda for $2.12 or something like that, and then I started to notice the strategy and puzzle games that were exclusive to the NES, picking some up as I went along... so then I actually found a complete NES toaster at a thrift for $9.19, (Yes, I actually owened games before I owned the system) so I grabbed it, thinking "If I don't like it, I can always splash it at Funco for store credit, and will still come out ahead... " Well, I still have it!

That would definately be the Atari 2600, i used to just collect genny games/Nes games...then I saw some for 50 cents a piece and couldn't back out of that, but of course they were all loose, but oh well.

SNES. I repeatedly passed up Final Fight Guy at Blockbuster ($5), even though I knew it was rare (I remembered reading about it in EGM, in the "rental exclusives" section), as well as Super Bomberman & multitap (same price).

I still don't know why I buy carts for the classic computers (C64, C16, VC20, Ti-99/4A, CoCo...) But I can never pass them up when I see a stack of them for cheap.

Everything I have except for my Dreamcast and Intellivision. It all started when I found a Saturn for $19.. then someone gave me an Atari 2600 and a SMS. I had no intentions of collecting for either, but while looking for INTV games, I was like, "Hell, these games are only a buck...". Then another friend game me a 5200 and 7800.... at this point I collected whatever I could find because I realized I'd have the system someday.

I've got 1400 carts or so... all within a *ONE* year period :P That might tell you something.

All I need now is an Odyssey 2 so I can play all these carts I've got.

Beleive it or not, the 2600 for me. I thought there were TOO many games, now they have homebrew games coming out, which make it harder to get a complete collection, and boom, i find a good deal on one, and buy it. Now i have 2 2600's and like 60 games. Not much to brag about, but its a start.

It was the NES and Genesis for me, I only collected for pre-NES systems and Atari. I originally had these two and played some games to death on them but I was never into nostolgia mode with them.

But last year I had a chance to buy a top loader NES and now have close to 100 carts. And I was sure I wouldn't pick up a Genesis unless I was forced too but two weeks ago I saw a lonely console for $4 and it took me half a day and $5 to get five more carts for it :)

For me it was 3DO. Out of the blue. I wanted to play Sewer Shark but I didn't want the Sega CD (or Genesis). I remembered the game was out for the 3DO so, after selling my Atari Jaguar I won a 3DO auction. So far I'm happy with it. It's been hell trying to get Sewer Shark (finally got it, it's in the mail as I type), but the games I do have are fun.

I never want to collect Game gear and SNES, but with GG i found excellent games like Shinobi and Shapes and columns and the system very cheap (about U$S 15), and the SNES for $ 20.

For me, it was PS1. I remember when PS1 and Saturn came out, I was a starving college student and was still having fun with my SNES, so I passed on it. I also thought the controller looked too complicated, and the graphics looked blocky.
Last year, I bought a used PS2 off a guy who wanted a GameCube, but I only bought PS2 games. Then, I started buying cheap PS1 games when I noticed how cheap they've been getting recently. This was about 4 months ago. At this writing, I only own 8 PS1 games.

In this order, what I didn't intend to collect but have:
Genesis (have traded away my collection several times)
NES boxes
SegaCD
Saturn
TI-99 edu carts
every 2600 console variant in the world
Dreamcast
SNES
32x (have traded away my collection several times)

Things I won't collect, but probably will:
*PS1
PS2
Xbox
*Gamecube
*3D0
*CDI

* means slap me if I start collecting these.

Sometimes I just can't help myself if it's cheap. Genny, SegaCD, Saturn and 32x have become that way.
